Belhaven voters go to the polls Tuesday to vote for a tax increase. Before voting, they might want to watch this February 2, 2021 video from the Jackson City Council as the Mayor said the new Belhaven taxes would allow the city to redirect funding away from Belhaven. Something about no good deed going unpunished.
Has anyone noticed how quiet the promoters of this tax have been leading up to the election? Notice how the Mayor and City Council call it a tax increase.

Yep, any new taxes would SUPPLANT the existing taxes, not SUPPLEMENT them. You libs in The Belhaven might want to look up SUPPLANT in the dictionary.
Hahahaha, just like I said.
Please, fellow Belhavenites, look at what this election can do. Not only will the mayor direct funds away from Belhaven and Belhaven Heights. The extra tax we pay will be spent by unelected people. If you are a renter, your rent will go up, because the landlord's taxes are going up. This is not a winning move for us..
Using the CID collection as the basis to pay for a bond is next.
They'll claim they've got to move quickly to avoid interest rate hikes.
The extra tax we pay will be spent by unelected people.
There is a lawsuit ready to be filed should this pass.
So proud of Mayor Lumumba. Jackson voters elected one of the best politicians the city has known. Harvard co-signed.
No, this is not correct. I heard the mayor said this will be an opportunity to “lower” taxes with the exception of the Belhaven\BelhavenHeights areas who choose to pay a little more.
I’m voting NO.
Don't see any signs pushing the vote either. Social media mainly been quiet from what I can tell. Interesting.
Who elected these people? When did the people of Belhaven vote to authorize them to speak on our behalf in matters of taxation, etc.?

@1:00 PM - Chowke, thanks for your contribution.
If anyone believes @1:00 PM without listening to the video then you deserve new taxes.
It's very clear what Chowke said, and it is "taking from the rich and giving to the poor," i.e. supplant the existing taxes with new taxes.
How insulting for this marxist thief to use Belhaven improvements as bait to raise slush funds for pet projects elsewhere, and then brag about it in advance! How does Virgi sit through this promised rape of her ward?
She is totally invested in it. Much of it is her idea. She personally went to the legislature day after day to lobby for it.

Wake up Belhaven and Belhaven Heights - Virgi is a left wing progressive who will kick y'all to the curb.
Thanks KF for keeping this issue in the forefront.
Maybe Belhaven can do the rest of the city another favor and pay the small extra it will take to keep Waste Management collecting our garbage? Lead by example.
There are at least 4 votes on the Council who likely won't support the continued gerrymandered absurdity that is the boundaries of Ward 7.
Do the math. 82.18% is 5.7526 of 7.
Socialism at its finest.
Pure socialist. It is not a democratic strategy, its a Democrat strategy. Limousine liberals at work.
Anyone who thinks Lumumba is going to let the white folks in Belhaven get ahead is delusional. Basically, he announced that he is going to put his thumb on the scale.
It will probably pass. It's not like anyone has been leading an opposition to it.
Don't see any signs pushing the vote either. Social media mainly been quiet from what I can tell. Interesting.
They've had it in the GBNF email blast. Where did they publish the notices? I admit I didn't spend enough time trying to find them. Not being very vocal to anyone but the supporters is a good strategy if you're pro CID. 50 people show up and 48 of them are on their mailing list...
Odd, when they want us to donate money, they send EDDM to every address in Belhaven. Virgi sent EDDM to every registered voter in Belhaven last election. But, when they decide they're about to tax you...crickets?
“So if someone is willing to give more because they have more, we need to take advantage of that.” Hummmm…
Get you some folks! 1% return on what you pay. It will NOT be a glorious gated community you envision. Damn near like the rest of Jackistan 10 years from now.
I'm just amazed that to have a "higher learning institution" smack dab in the middle of Belhaven, you're a bunch of ignorant noobs!!!!!!
"From each according to his ability, to Each according to his need". Who
said that?
can belhaven form its own city? like buckhead in atlanta is trying to do?
People in Belhaven. Attention! You raise more, the mayor will fund you less. No sum game. Giving Jackson more revenue is like giving alcohol to an alcoholic.
Chowke said "right?" during his little song and dance, so he must have been expressing the truth, right?
At 1:10 a.m. this morning, Richard's was quietly positioning dumpsters throughout Belhaven.
The Mair has your back(pocket).
That’s a first, a huge red and white garbage truck driving down the wrong lane during 8:00 am traffic on Meadowbrook.
Per Stokes, Richards is working for free.
The "beautiful people" are to ignorant to understand what it means to be bent over at the shins and poked deep. So this will go thru and they will toot toot toot their liberal horns.
Belhaven residents are about to find out where Katie hid the wedge.
@8:20 AM
You should've allowed the truck to hit you. Once it does, do NOT move; tell the paramedics that your neck and back are hurting. Trust me.
Belhaven resident here.
I want to vote yes, because the money could improve the neighborhood.
I want to vote no, because of the Mayor’s comment and the fact that it appears that Virgi’s husband or son is on the list of people in charge of the money. Virgi’s family should have no involvement. I don’t know everyone in Belhaven and I can’t read peoples minds, but Virgi popularity is tanking. Heck she lives on a street that is basically the suburb of Belhaven.
What could be better, would be for the city to get rid the stupid historic zones where people need permission to do renovations, have trees cut, etc., and just let people do what they want to their property without all the red tape. Then continue to collect money for blue light cameras.
"are to ignorant to understand..."
Too ignorant. Too.
just dump the trash at the zoo. no one goes there anymore anyway..
Attn 3:06 a.m. What are you doing riding around at 1:10 a.m. and texting at 3:06? You stand a real good chance of getting shot riding in Jackson at that time. This is a public service announcement.
Consider how the City treats areas it thinks are covered by the CCID. Yesterday people called JPD about the loud protesters at Fondren Park and were told they needed to call the Capitol Police even though the park isn't in the CCID. So, it isn't unbelievable that this money would mean less tax money going to Belhaven.
So basically we still have a few suckers left in Belhaven so lets tax them some more. I apprecaite his honesty but like Biden why in the world would you say this out loud
"just dump the trash at the zoo. no one goes there anymore anyway."
Shhh.
Keep it up dems. I saw a movie about Jackson and liberal cities in the future. Snake Plissken had to go save the Presidents daughter. But seriously belhaven people have loyally fought for Jackson when everyoen else has given up and this is their thank you
9:18 : I said the words and the phone wrote em down. Blame Steve Jobs.
"I want to vote yes, because the money could improve the neighborhood."
Oh really? Now just which neighborhood would that be? Pretty clear to me from the video, it wouldn't be Belhaven.
CID won't move property values one iota. The staggering 69 mils will impact your sales price.
If they want to pay more in taxes let them. It is their money and they can waste it anyway they want.
No city nor country has ever been taxed into prosperity.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if this passes, it will mean the end of virtually any coverage by the Jackson police dept. This will have the complete opposite effect as planned. Go ahead though, spend your good money to encourage further anarchy and additional devaluation of property values.
I was told the following by a Belhaven person who is extremely familiar with the Belhaven Community District (CID) idea: "The mayor walked all that [meaning his comments in the video from February 2, 2021] back in a later meeting. . . . It [the Belhaven CID project] will raise 200k a year for our neighborhood and . . . we need it. . . . The tax collector will send the money [the extra tax money] to Greater Belhaven Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a more than 20-year proven track record for managing projects that benefit our neighborhood. Its board will decide how to spend the money based on a very robust master planning process that neighbors will be invited to participate in. . . . [N]eighbors also will have the opportunity to vote to elect directors for that board."
All the hard work and influx of Texas liberals to this place for it to end up Luhbumbled. Hahahahahahahahahahahah !!!!!!
116, the Mayor has not publically walked back any of his comments. You have been told so, but that's not been the modus of the Mayor in similar conditions.
And - your theory that the tax collector will send the money to GBNF is wrong. They will have to apply to the city for money, similar to the BID in Fondren.
And despite the Fondren BID having raised over $200,000, they have $60,000 that they cannot get released by the city - holding back their intent to issue a contract. For the money that they have been able to spend, they have to go througn five different departments in order to get a dollar released.
And there is nothing that has provided that neighbors will get an opportunity to vote for the directors of the board. Just as the current board was formed by GBNF - which certainly does not include all neighbors - the GBNF will decide the directors.
But - thanks for your input, for whatever it was worth.
