Catch & Release! Squawk! Catch & Release!

Chauncy Reed walks free on the streets of Jackson as a proud graduate of the Hinds County Catch & Release program.  Readers might remember Mr. Reed tried to kill a Jackson police officer in May 2018 but he was never indicted.  To make matters worse, a grand jury indicted Reed for another shooting and a separate case of drug dealing but he got a nice little plea deal that made him eligible for parole in a couple of years and paroled he was.

JJ reported on Mr. Reed's criminally good fortune two weeks ago:

There is still no justice for a police officer who survived a deadly shootout at a South Jackson gas station 3 1/2 years ago.  Two men tried to shoot JPD Officer Mike Tarrio but he managed to kill one assailant and arrest the other.  He received an "Officer of the Year" award for his bravery under fire.  However, this being Jackson, such heroism did not go unpunished as Jackson suspended him with pay for over a year.  While Tarrio suffered, the man who repeatedly shot at him was never indicted and walks free today.  The Hinds County Catch & Release program is indeed alive and well in 2021.

MBI investigated the case since it involved a police officer shooting.  MBI told JJ  it provided the findings of the investigation to Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith in January 2019.

The Hinds County Circuit Clerk's records state the grand jury declined to indict Officer Tarrio in July 2019.  However, Smith did not present Chauncy Reed to the grand jury for the murder and attempted murder charges.... Earlier post.

A Hinds County grand jury indicted Reed in October 2018 for aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle in March 2017.   Reed also dabbled in a little bit of drug dealing as a grand jury indicted him in May 2018 for four counts of possessing cocaine, meth, and marijuana with intent to distribute.  The indictment said he had 187 grams of cocaine.  He was also indicted for possessing a stolen firearm.  However, the Dope Boys' D.A., Robert Shuler Smith, blessed Mr. Reed.

Smith's office remanded the aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle charges in September 2019.  Prosecutors dropped the firearms enhancement for the firearms charges as well.  Judge Adrienne Wooten sentenced Reed to serve 15 years in prison  but suspended five years and gave him credit for time served.  The drug charges are considered to be "non-violent" so Reed was probably eligible for parole after he served 25% of his sentence and paroled he was.

The Mississippi Parole Board granted parole to Reed on August 10, 2021.  Yup.  Chauncy Reed walks the streets a free man, one of Robert Shuler Smith's special children.

However, freedom may be fleeting for Chauncy Reed. District Attorney Jody Owens said he will present Reed's case to the January meeting of the grand jury for the May 2018 shooting and death of his brother.

Only in Hinds County and sad part is, it will not get any better

Its ironic that voting for someone (almost solely) based on skin color was frowned upon in years past.

But years of doing exactly that in Jackson has created a city full of inept leadership.

Now no intelligent person of ANY skin color wants the job.

Be it Judge, Mayor, DA...this is just what you get.

Thank goodness for you Kingfish. If not for you I wonder if the current DA would have "found" this issue that was frankly glaring brightly for all JPD to see.

at the current rate, Jackistan is on track for 183 murders this year. Maybe Chauncy will commit one or two of those.

I can't conceive of anyone wanting to be employed by JPD. They would get more respect and a better chance of survival playing in rush hour traffic on I-55.

And Jax wonders why it can't hire police officers and the ones that are hired are caught smoking weed. It's the real 3rd world right here at home.

This is a good example why the constant propaganda about "non-violent" offenses is so harmful to our communities. Put one person in the hospital and get thrown under the jail, put hundreds in the hospital as a trafficker and we can't release you fast enough.
Sure is good to be a drug dealer these days. Used to be you actually had to pay off a DA to get a light sentence. Now you just have to be the right skin color and/or make sure you're dealing in a progressive paradise.

Liberal leaders in liberal cities dining with the devil at the loaded buffet.

Owens has 21 days or 15 business days to make good on his promise or I chalk him up as another RSS.

The officer was very brave and should be commended. He hung in there and kept fighting, please promote him. Also, he should have used a shotgun, it the best choice to win these close-up gun battles. Keep in mind, he didn't start it.

Meanwhile Chowkey thinks all that needs to be done is to get all the would-be murderers to swing by the new credible messenger clubhouse to receive some more pablum and endless rhetoric.

Both Mayor and Chief Davis should be gone. Davis should stand up for JPD officers instead of butt kissing the Mayor. Former Chief Robert Johnson fought for his officers but also corrected them appropriately when they needed guidance. This is why Johnson was respected!

If Davis would write a resignation letter (with copy to the press) stating "I cannot continue working for an administration that has no respect for law and order, does not support it's police department and has turned our city over to the lawless element"...he could walk out the door and have six other offers of employment at higher pay by the end of the month.

Is he that attached to Chokwe (and a job he's not allowed to do) that he has no balls?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
