Clarion-Ledger "Top Editor" Mary Irby-Jones will be moving on to bigger and better things. The "state newspaper" reported:
Mary Irby-Jones, top editor for the Clarion Ledger and Hattiesburg American, is leaving Mississippi to lead the Courier Journal newsroom in Louisville, Kentucky, USA TODAY Network South Regional Editor Michael Anastasi announced Tuesday.
Irby-Jones, a Mississippi native and veteran journalist with more than 30 years of professional experience, will join the Courier Journal on March 12 as executive editor. She became editor of the Clarion Ledger in January 2020.
"This is a bittersweet moment for me," Irby-Jones said. "I love my home state, and the Clarion Ledger. I'm proud of the work we've done here in Mississippi and I look forward to continuing to do great work in Louisville."
Both papers are part of the USA TODAY Network, owned by Gannett.
"We’re very excited about this opportunity for her to lead in Louisville," said Anastasi, who oversees the Mississippi newsrooms in a South region that includes publications in Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee. "It’s always sad news and happy news at the same time when things like this happen because we're extremely happy for the opportunity for Mary, and sad because we have to say goodbye to her.".. Article.
Kingfish note: Um, Mary who? Since she cooped up in Hattiesburg, did anyone even know she existed?

"I look forward to continuing to do great work ..." Any decent journalist reviles this platitude - anybody can look forward to anything. I personally look forward to winning the MegaMillions jackpot. I also look forward to an affair with Angelina Jolie & Jennifer Lopez in a three-way. But it ain't gonna happen - just like Irby-Jones' great work in Mississippi didn't happen either.
Nothing to see here- move along.
Peter Principle lives in journalism.
Thanks for mentioning her name as I have no memory of ever hearing it before. As you report, it will not be hard to move to “bigger and better things” than leaving the Clarion Ledger.
Angelina Jolie & Jennifer Lopez
eww what decade do you think it is, you senile geezer?
The . . . Clarion-Ledger?
What exactly is this thing that is supposedly called The Clarion-Ledger?
If I was the sports editor she hired - his only qualification is the color of his skin - I'd be worried. He turned out to be a third-rate beat writer covering USM sports. Major fail.
I wonder if my birds will even notice.
" Angelina Jolie & Jennifer Lopez
eww what decade do you think it is, you senile geezer? "
Hell, I agree with that !
And I'm a geezer as well.
But back on topic, I'm still amazed the CL is still printed.
Even the free copies on front desks of budget hotels are rarely touched by customers.
Virtually nobody buys an individual copy of that paper anymore. The only people who get it now are a few thousand mostly older White folks outside of Jackson who get it for the sales inserts and puzzles.
I take it online for the comics, and the scramble. They're worth $4.00 a month.
" I take it online for the comics, and the scramble. They're worth $4.00 a month."
You're waisting $48 bucks per year.
Hundreds of thousands web sites provide better comics and word games . . . ( free of charge ).
What a sad demise of a newspaper that now rivals the condition of the city in which it exists.
This is the one who came in with the long article, her "letter" to us, that she & her associates would be focusing on racial justice, equality, racism, etc. Many of the papers whole first sections were focused on these problems. When she didn't have a specific racial incident to focus on, she highlighted movies that portrayed racism. How are you ever going to get along if you can't move on because the editor does not want to report the news, but rather focuses on problems in the past? Don't even think about highlighting history like Pearl Harbor? Not a mention on that anniversary, nor the Americans who sacrificed everything so she could rant & rave and ignore the news.
Thank you God for removing this divisive woman.
Back in the "old days", we'd inform our citizens, before a "cold snap", to wrap their pipes to prevent them from freezing. And the best thing to wrap an exposed pipe with was....newspaper. But now in the "digital age", you folks don't have access to a newspaper even to wrap your pipes. Now I hear your current Mayor blamed this last "cold snap" on the Good Lord. Maybe he should have blamed the Clarion Ledger, and obviously you couldn't even peel the non-existent paper image and rap sheet of a local repeat felon off a damn billboard to wrap your pipes either.
And that my friends is the bottom line.
It's really odd when an Irby marries to keep up with the Jones's??
What is the scramble? Do you mean the Jumble?
I'd think someone who played it regularly would know its name.
Save yourself some money and go to gocomics.com and sporcle.com. Both are free.
The Clarion Ledger AKA Clarion Liar has been a leftist propagandist rag full of liars for 4 or so decades.
The Clarion Liar lied with front page “Riots at Ole Miss” news when Obama beat Romney, they lied long before that headline, and they have been lying ever since.
You can literally give the Clarion Ledger a written statement and they will re-write it.
Probably because, just as the Ole Miss journalism student lied with the social media report, that caused a large crowd to gather,
that was then falsely reported as riots,
they are all taught not to report the news,
they are taught to make it up.
It’s amazing how many Republicans have supported and continue to subscribe to the Clarion Liar.
The world, especially the Jackson metro area, will be a much better place when the Clarion Liar is gone.
As 3:04 said, the statement "bigger and better things" is pretty much the only possibility.
Also, @12:17, if you're wrapping pipes with newspaper you have a lot to learn.
If she was not the one who created the crossword puzzles, I never read a word she wrote.
No More Mallard... We are very upset. Continued cancel culture and WOKE Culture is very scary. prohibition of free speech is un-American and un-constitutional.
Still got JFP to wrap pipes with. That's all it's good for.
I never thought that I would see someone sink the C-L to a lower level than Agnew had taken it.
Print JFP on last legs so grab a half dozen or more if you need the actual paper for other purposes.
Ironic when you think back to when Ladd was predicting in 2007 that Kingfish wouldn't last even a few months.
Meanwhile "Mississippi Today" just hired a new "reporter" to cover health issues in Mississippi "with a keen eye towards reproductive justice and women's and girls health". Yeah a so called non partisan news site just wrote that on their website. Why don't you just call him an abortion reporter?.
1:14, how dare you use masculine pronouns on the Mississippi Today reporter. Xir/they/it may not feel affirmed.
The Clarion Ledger has an editor?
Did Mississippi Today use the $257,000 in PPP bailout money they received for the hire?
If the Clarion Ledger had an editor, it seems like they would learn the difference between Ole Miss and MSU.
You are correct that you can give them a direct quote and they will change it to fit the agenda they want to tell. It happened to me.
