The Mayor of Aberdeen stole from the public purse. WTVA reported:
Aberdeen Mayor Maurice Howard pleaded guilty on Monday to embezzlement.
As a result, he will be removed from office
A grand jury indicted the mayor on five counts of embezzlement in October 2019.
Court documents pointed to five separate trips, ranging from April 2017 to September 2017, to events and conferences in Jackson, Michigan, Atlanta and Alabama.
He was accused of converting the trip money he received from the City of Aberdeen to his own use and not returning the money to the city.
The amount stolen was $3,500. State Auditor Shadrick White issued the following statement:
“I am pleased this morning that Mr. Howard, who stole from the people of Aberdeen, has been removed from office and has pleaded guilty to a felony. When a politician takes public money for their own benefit and lies about it, it’s important to remember there are victims. The victims are the taxpayers and people of the city. I’m grateful for the work of the district attorney’s office and my investigators for bringing this case to a conclusion.”
Suspected fraud can be reported to the Auditor’s office online any time by clicking the red button at www.osa.ms.gov or via telephone during normal business hours at 1-(800)-321-1275.

Throw your dignity away for $3500. What a world we live in.
C'mon Man!? $3,500.00 ain't never hurt nobody......
Wonder when ole Shad will go after Phil Bryant for flying his friends and family first class around the world on the state’s dime. Oh that’s right, he won’t.
I don't see how this in any way should have an effect on him being a good mayor.
Wonder how much his success fee was for the project below? Firms usually don't fly in on private jets unless the deal is baked.

I agree with 11:13 a.m. Stealing money from the very government entity for which you work does not reflect in any way on how well you do your job. I'm going to start stealing from my employer. It may help my performance reviews.
It's a crime no doubt, but I hope there's a lot more to it which is not being charged or disclosed maybe because of insufficient evidence. Otherwise, seems like he's fishing for minnows.
@11:13
I highly doubt someone this stupid was doing a great job as mayor.
Clarification on what happened? The city pre-paid him for trips that he never took and then pocketed the cash? Don't most cities make their employees pay using their personal credit cards and them reimburse the official?
Did anybody ever get called out ie:lose their position, when the airport board went on that boondoggle to the Paris Air Show. Also wonder haw much business was generated since that was the purpose of the trip. Oh, I know NOTHING.
11:22 there is a lot to unpack in that article if you know how municipalities work. Someone is getting the better end of that deal, and only a fool thinks it's the city of Aberdeen.
Attn 1:17 I still believe the reason Southwest Airlines left Jackson was that they were getting the Shakedown by that board. I made enough flights on southwest from Jackson to know they were full on virtually every trip I took. Let’s see how long this next southwest honeymoon lasts.
Alarming to see the numbskulls on here who either think this is not big deal or that theft of public funds has no effect on the job being done. Where the hell does these kooks get their home training, education and system of ethical behavior?
Travel advances are pretty common in government and business. Keeping them and not going on the trip, not so much so.
Sarcasm. Don't you guys know sarcasm when you read it? Of course this loser was not doing a great job! But that is the mind set of many of his constituents.
Another example of the white middle class fleeing small town Mississippi. 1980 population was 7200. Now it's 5200 and dropping. 70% black and only 28% White. Going on all over Mississippi.
3:24 That's strange. All the census data shows black people flocking to the larger urban areas especially in states like Mississippi. Whites heading to the suburbs. Everybody who can afford to go looks for something better, Black and White. What's your point?
Salary plus all you can steal. Sadly that's the way many employee's see it. The $3500 was just a perk.
Now, if Shad would go after Lumumba. He's received kickbacks on everything from Siemens to the grant money given out to friends and family. Pastor Pickett and his Lablinq for one.
Chokwe went from living off Pear Orchard in a small gated area in an average sized house, to a large house in a gated street across from Covenant Presbyterian since he took office. $$$ doesn't add up.
I had a few work trips planned in March and April 2020.
I had pre-booked everything using my own credit card.
You'd be surprised how efficiently I worked to ensure all were canceled and refunded since it was my card on each reservation.
Like people who pay very little in taxes and seem to want the government to give them everything.
It is easy to not care when its not your money.
8:02 - When one gets elected to public office, his credik rating automatically improves dramatically and what used to be an $8000 card limit is, overnight, a $100,000 limit. Seven of those cards in your name and four in the name of your wife almost becomes free money.
"Wonder when ole Shad will go after Phil Bryant for flying his friends and family first class around the world on the state’s dime."
While Ole Phil pretended to really dislike the Obama family, the behavior patterns of both families was eerily parallel.
1/1 11:11 As a friend of Phil Bryant, I ask you to name one trip where he flew his friends around the world. You can't. I would have loved to go on a trip. Also, why bring up Phil in a conversation about a small time Mayor. Sounds to me that you don't like Phil so you can lie about him when it gives you pleasure. Get a life.
Hello to the gal at 9:09 who used to be in Espy's MadCo chair.
