Check out the five finalists for the new Mississippi flag.

Sucks

Mediocre

Really sucks

Mediocre plus

Never seen another state included in a state flag before

I really liked the one with the Mosquito.

Not sure anybody cares now that the rebel emblem is gone. Of course Chris McDaniel is all over the internet with a ballot initiative to bring the old flag back up for a vote.

Playing to his base, but he can forget ever climbing higher than that $12,000 political position he's in now.

Anonymous said...

Apparently the committee has a generic theme.

Anonymous said...

Love the names. Now I know how to tell someone which one I hate more.

Anonymous said...

Number 5 makes it look like we've annexed Alabama.

Anonymous said...

Did the same person draw #2,4,& 5? The theme of the stars and magnolia flower are very similar.

Of all the poor choices I guess I like mediocre and mediocre plus.

They should have kept the mosquito.

Anonymous said...

Although Sucks would be the easiest for my kid to draw, I prefer Mediocre.

Anonymous said...

Number 5 is the most appropriate given our obesity rate. Look how wide our state is!

Everyone said...

These all suck

Anonymous said...

Number 1 has grown on me since I read the history.

Anonymous said...

I’d pick mediocre, followed by sucks.

Anonymous said...

Of these, I'd have to go with #2. But the imbalance in the stars (10 white stars on the left vs 9 on the right plus the gold star in the center) really throws off the whole design. Once you see that the left-hand stars are closer together than those on the right, you can't unsee it. The same thing is happening in flags 4 and 5. That said, and of those flags are considerably better than #1 or #5. I really am disappointed that the commission removed the one that had red on one side, blue on the other and a white representation of the river in between. To me, that was the most unique and aesthetically pleasing of the 9 finalists.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad the ugliest site on the internet is offering design guidance.

Anonymous said...

I just watched the work of a committee of the blind, picking the most hideous, 70s style jokes that 2000 twits could offer.

I hope we can get the old flag back. But, if not, the flag with the seal was perfect.

They simply look like MS Paint, 1985. The Union Pacific logo misappropriated, and 4 hideous renditions of the magnolia. That's IT? The best they could come up with???

None of the above.

Anonymous said...

I vote for Mediocre Plus. #4

Anonymous said...

The only replacement flag that was worth a damn was that mosquito flag. And just like Ole Miss and Admiral Akhbar, the hayseeds are missing a golden opportunity. Mississippi is an absolute joke to the rest of this nation. That flag would've embraced something that unifies every Mississippian and human around the world against a common enemy. Nothing unifies people like a common enemy. We all hate mosquitoes.

Anonymous said...

Why was the Stennis (“hospitality’) flag removed? The real reason? (not the line we were fed)

that one is better than these.

the old state flag was also boring. three stripes and a stars/bars?

Anonymous said...

They should have kept the mosquito.

I liked the skeeter flag, too.

Anonymous said...

#5 Bart Simpson. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Anonymous said...

Kingfish, please use your voice to lead us to rally for the Mosquito Flag. All we need to do is add "In God We Trust" below the bloodsucker and fight for our right to vote for the Drill Sergeant!

Anonymous said...

If the "Stennis" flag had been designed by someone named "Smith" it probably would be an easy choice.

Kingfish said...

My first thought when I see the fifth one is I'm looking at an outline of Louisiana. That boot gives it away.

Anonymous said...

Pretty poor choices we have to pick from.
The old state flag beats them all.
Take the in god we trust off the flags.
It is just another reason to have to change the flag again in a year or so.
That might be a good idea if this is what we have to choose from.

Anonymous said...

There were some half ass decent options until earlier this week.
(all designs considered)

Then . . . a few days ago , the democratic (cancel culture) "woke" crowd starts screaming that a damn magnolia flower is more "racist" than a Confederate or "Rebel flag" ???

WTF ??????

Anonymous said...

Can we let the 3rd graders give it a shot?

Anonymous said...

All of them are awful

Anonymous said...

Can we do a write in for the mosquito flag?

Anonymous said...

Just put a black fist on it & be done with it.

Anonymous said...

"Number 5 makes it look like we've annexed Alabama."

Actually that one is the most historically accurate.
The entire state of Alabama was originally part of the Mississippi Territory.

The residents in that part of the Mississippi Territory laughed at the Natchez "political power brokers" and split.

Bama' had the last laugh.

The rest is history.

Anonymous said...

I liked the mosquito too. For real!

Anonymous said...

We should've let 4chan pick our flag.

An anime catgirl in a nazi uniform would be better than what we have now.

Anonymous said...

The options are pretty pedestrian. KF ruined #5 for me, because I cannot unsee Lowsyanna. Of those options, #4 may get my vote. Hell, I'm going to write-in none of the above.

Anonymous said...

@4:24
The white magnolia represents white beauty. We are supposed to be minimizing or even eliminating whiteness as a social construct.

Anonymous said...

"Why was the Stennis flag removed? "

Where have you been ?
The Stennis name conjures up visions of racism, racism and more racism!

"Can we let the 3rd graders give it a shot?"

Now that's the best idea I've heard during this debate.

Anonymous said...

How about a design with the Land Shark logo, and the words "Hotty Toddy?"

Anonymous said...

Amazingly bad. So the ballot will have a “none of the above” check box?

Anonymous said...

Should have had a football in the middle; that's something everybody could get behind.

Maybe a catfish for a quarterback, a mosquito for the receiver, and a deer in scope crosshairs for the referee.

Anonymous said...

The Stennis flag was much better than any of these choices.

Anonymous said...

Buffoonery has run amuck in our distinguished selection committee. These may be among the worst of all the entries. I too like the mosquito flag, but since Louisiana adopted that as their state bird our adoption wouldn't be neighborly. Thus, I offer an alternative in the annoying insect theme. Imagine: A pair of mating love bugs stuck to a headlight on a field of some wispy, pastel color (to show our cultural sensitivity.)

Anonymous said...

The Stennis flag by any other name wins easily. its all about labeling

Anonymous said...

@4:37, actually yes, let’s do that one

Anonymous said...

4:01- bingo.

Anonymous said...

Put the Mosquito flag on the ballot. I’ll bet it will win by 60%.

Anonymous said...

"The Stennis flag was much better than any of these choices."

Nope.
That's only your opinion 4:47.

Have you every heard the cliché :
“beauty is in the eye of the beholder”

????

Anonymous said...

If the final choice resembles Lauren Steniss's design in any way, I'll bet good money that she sues. I'm sure the Commission realized this so don't expect any bars on the side of circles of stars.

Anonymous said...

Mosquito flag or no flag.

Anonymous said...

Being from Louisiana, I truly appreciate Mississippi including the Louisiana Delta and Louisiana's Florida parishes as part of one of the proposed state flags.

I still like the Stennis flag over these possibilities. The first one looks like an insurance company logo. The second and fourth options are basically the same design.

Mike said...

Sucks and mediocre plus are barely acceptable. Although the shield flag is not proportioned correctly. There’s too. Ugh blue space. Shield and star both need to be larger.

Anonymous said...

The committee will select one of these 5 flags that will appear on the ballot in November. You vote yes or no on that flag. It must get a majority of the votes to be approved. If it fails they start over for next year's vote.

Anonymous said...

These are very fitting. They all capture how dumb and uneducated the state’s population is. They are all awful.

The good thing is we can vote NO on any of these abortions.

Anonymous said...

If our choice for a state flag is one of these and the former flag then I say just leave the flag alone. I personally like the last one but I think the red/blue should be balanced.

Anonymous said...

I like the flag of Gondor. We should give credit to Tolkien or the Game of Thrones

Anonymous said...

Just be sure to vote NO in the Nov. Elections.

Anonymous said...

524, while your trial lawyer, liberal mindset is appropriate, you should keep up with all parts of the story before you start writing your lawsuit.

Stennis removed 'her' design from the process - and just because others submitted a design that had 20 stars, or parnell bars, or whatever other similarities you might conceive - those things are not copywritable. 9nly the actual design she did - which IMHO which is worth no more than those above who loved the design - was not a good design. Snd despite her lecturing us all for years about how her vexio .... whatever - her flag design expert - says, these all hit the highpoint just as well. As if that matters.

I dont particularly care for any of the final five, but would take three of them over the 'Stennis' or for those that like to rename to avoid, the 'hospitality flag --- as if there is any reason at all to suggest it had a damn thing to do with hospitality.

Anonymous said...

Which flag does Commandant Gunn want? His is the only opinion that matters. Don't believe me? Just ask him, if you disagreee he'll call Dilbert on you

Anonymous said...

Is there any history behind that middle one? What’s that tree supposed to be?

Anonymous said...

Where’s the one with a 500lb diabetic rolling their wheelchair up to the buffet? Now that’s Mississippi!

Anonymous said...

This entire process has made no sense.

We're going to vote on one design determined by a damn "committee" ?
Hell, the Soviet Communist Politburo wasn't as stupid as Gunn or Hoseman with this idea.

"We should give credit to the Game of Thrones"

Agreed 6:06 !

That's at least three cool choices:

House Stark
House Lannister
House Targaryen

A Wolf, a Lion and a Dragon.
Three cool choices.

Anonymous said...

What about the I Quit Flour sack? I liked that one.

Anonymous said...

You all know that, with the "In God We Trust" phrase on it, whatever sign is picked, it's only temporary.

MadisonRulz said...

McDaniel makes a good point about flag elections. We should have a jungle primary with all 300 submissions with the top 2 making the runoff.

Anonymous said...

Reminds me of Lucy taking the ball away from Charlie Brown , just at the last moment. They won't let the voices of the people be heard on a marijuana issue without trying to confuse the voter but we'll give you a chance to choose a flag we approve of! Mississippi at its finest!

Anonymous said...

Simple is always better, just quick look and you know it, like;

California White field Golden Bear

Arizona Blue field Star and Rays

Washington Green field picture of George Washington

South Carolina Blue field Palmetto Tree & Crescent

Wyoming Blue field Buffalo

Mississippi Green field Magnolia Bloom just sayin

Anonymous said...

ANY of the above is better than the old (former!) flag.

Anonymous said...

Who gives a crap which one replaces the flag we had? We are 50th in every meaningful metric, and no new flag will make a difference in getting off the bottom. But at least we got rid of the last one, which gave the rest of the U.S. yet another excuse to trash us.

Anonymous said...

9:12~ Nope. You are incorrect. These are ugly.

The last state flag was proud, regal, and uniting.

Anonymous said...

Sorry job. What I expected. How about a plain white flag that says kick me.

Anonymous said...

Stennis didn't submit her design. One of her many toadies did and Stennis told the committee they did not have her permission to consider her flag. She also posted a hissy fit on her Instagram account. She was pissed because she thought the legislature ought to pick her flag without considering any other designs. She's royalty, you know.

Anonymous said...

If I believe correctly some of the designers are not even residents of this state, go figure that.

Anonymous said...

Please just dont let our flag be the flag of Gondor from Lord of the Rings - https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FRings-Flag-Gondor-90x150-Lasting%2Fdp%2FB01CNUW9QW&psig=AOvVaw1BFb6zGEY1_VamFPXRcUxp&ust=1597924905727000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CA0QjhxqFwoTCJD1paecp-sCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

Poor Selection by Committee. None of the Finalist are attractive flags. Commission failed to look at the State Flags of the other 49 States. One flag shows the outline of Mississippi Territory including Alabama. If they wanted a river this is a poor excuse. A Magnolia or Cotton image is too antebellum.

Anonymous said...

None of the Above flag designs would win on a fair ballot. Several designs are deeply flawed. Looks like the Committee tried to put a Race Horse to gather and came up with a Jackass.

Anonymous said...

Did we get an invite to the MLS since we are changing flags? But seriously, the first flag only brings to mind soccer shields.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

They all suck!

Anonymous said...

Flag Commission rolled Snake Eyes. No body is happy with the Finalist.

Anonymous said...

8/18/20 at 6:55 PM wins this thread. LMAO

Anonymous said...

Regardless of the one they pick to vote on in November, I'm voting NO!!!

Anonymous said...

"Number 5 makes it look like we've annexed Alabama." More like the map of the old West Florida Territory of the 1700-1800. The White Magnolia is a symbol of purity which I have no idea why anyone would associate it with Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

Just make sure the SEC symbol is the right upper corner.

Anonymous said...

Gracious! All this negativity!

All it would take is a little tweeking to have a perfect flag. For example, take the top flag - just make the shield thing in the center a little smaller, add the stylized "Mississippi" (as used by the MDA and on license plates) arched over the shield thing, move the word "sucks" up a little higher and put it the same font as "Mississippi" and reverse arched under the shield, add the word "but" in front of "in God we trust," and TA-DA! Five minutes with a open-source graphics program and a new state flag is born!

And the best part is that some company like Frontier Strategies can bill the taxpayers tens of thousands for design, promotion, flacking and general all-purpose bullshittery, plus everyone's favorite law firm can bill tens of thousands for...for...well, there has to be something for them to bill for. There always has been in the past.

Anonymous said...

The Stennis/Hospitality flag should be in the running. It’s what people want outside of a small, obtuse group who think nothing good can come from the descendants of people who did wrong.

Anonymous said...

My vote is with the Blue Flag and Shield. I like it better than the "hospitality flag" that isn't part of the selection and just like 10:09 stated it only needs few design tweeks to fix it. IMO makes it perfect for another 100+ years of representation. BWC

Anonymous said...

!0:37 - what part of Stennis did not submit her design do you not understand? She thought she had a lock on it and when she didn't, she took her toys, threw a fit, and went home.

Anonymous said...

These are all fucking hideous. I'd rather have mosquito flag.

Anonymous said...

5:19 PM
Only ugly people believe that.

Anonymous said...

The so-called Stennis flag did not include the “in god we trust” bone the legislature threw all of redneck religious fundamentalists. But it is far better than any of these.

Louis LeFleur said...

While I don't really like any of them, of these 5 choices I'd go with "really sucks". Guess I'm the only one, but consider:
1) Simple
2) Stylized, scrappy little magnolia tree is better than a single blossom and looks like it is struggling, which is appropriate.
3) The stupid but mandatory print is the smallest and thus least noticeable of all the options.
4) The plain blue background is reminiscent of the Bonnie Blue flag that was used before the Confederacy, but came to be a symbol thereof anyway. (Ooops! Hope I didn't let the cat out of the bag with that statement!)

Anonymous said...

Louis LeFleur suggested:

"2) Stylized, scrappy little magnolia tree is better than a single blossom and looks like it is struggling, which is appropriate."

I understand what you are saying, but it needs a little something more. Maybe something that symbolizes Mississippi industry or maybe its "welcome one, welcome all" attitude. HEY! I got it! A chicken pinata, hanging from...oh wait...oops...nope, nevermind.

Anonymous said...

the first one looks like a fat butt sitting on a stool--with a tramp stamp...

someone said the old flag was unifying--yeah, at a klan rally..its 2020--time to get rid of the confederate stuff..

Anonymous said...

All these posters that keep saying that the Stennis/Hospitality/Seg flag is the one we need to adopt must have one hanging outside their homes.
They're all butt hurt and think that if they just keep on flying it they'll still be able to say they are morally better than everyone else.
When the new flag is chosen, and they still continue to fly the Stennis/Hospitality/Seg flag, they'll be just like the people they've been talking down to for years for daring to continue flying the old flag.
Pathetic.

Anonymous said...

When you have Blount's wife on the committee what do you expect She's butt-hurt over the Stennis flag as well.

Drop the In God We Trust stuff. It may have been a tactic to pass, but it is not needed.

Lastly, No 5 should be the favorite of Lumumba since it could represent all the land he wants to take for Kush.

Anonymous said...

The third design looks like someone borrowed the old Deposit Guaranty logo. Instead of "In God We Trust", I would not have been surprised if the designer put "Grow With Us".

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
