This might get played several times today.

Great memories! That was my first concert.

What a flash back to when Jackson was a legit concert venue. When a big ticket artist would not only play to a small crowd of 6000 in a red and yellow striped tuna can with horrible sound, but would also record that show professionally and use it to promote themselves.
I reckon all that changed with one toss of a beer bottle to Bon Jovi's head.
But hey, we got a copper roof and Alan Jackson now!

Back then concert promoters were ok with making less money on a few shows in a tour--the band was paid the same for the show in jackson or atlanta...

but bands don't want to tour like they did in the 90's--less concerts on a tour are more normal now--so why should we sell a show at the ms coliseum when we could sell out smoothie king center and make more money..

wow, was at this show! right in front of kirk studying every note. one of the best shows i've ever seen at the coliseum. i too was at the bon jovi concert when he got hit by the bottle. we had to sign a damn petition to even get them here and that's how we thanked them for coming. they played maybe 40 minutes and left.

What was the opening band for this concert?

JX // RX

Jackson rocks!!!

pjm said...

seeing how White Lion opened for every band for a few years there you'd think they opened for Metallica. however, i honestly think there wasn't an opening act for that show.

ardenland is doing a great job bring in bands to Jackson. We definitely hit a dry spell for a while before them.

9:37, I don't remember there being an opening act for this one, just close to 3 full hours of Metallica

I've heard someone say that the end of the great concerts in Jackson was something about Jackson having an extremely high entertainment tax. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that or not?

Kingfish said...

Don't forget someone spit on Steven Tyler when Aerosmith came.

There was a fight or stabbing at one of the concerts.

The Jackson rednecks would get drunk and act a damn fool at the shows.

On the other side of the coin, however, let's not forget Vince Gill's last appearance here, the Coliseum, about ten years ago. During that visit, as he was leaving, he proclaimed, "Mississippi Sucks!"

For days the on air personalities at 102.9 tried to claim Gill had apologized and should be forgiven. But, no apology was ever aired that we heard of. Just chatter from the radio station that was affiliated with the concert that night. Vince Gill has not been back since. Good riddance.

That to say this: It's not just the 'fans' who behave poorly and cause hard feelings. Some of the performers are also assholes.

And how many of you, along with me, walked out of Dylan's performance after he followed Merle, at the Coliseum a few years back?

I wouldn't roll down the window to hear Metallica if they were across the street.

The Cult opened for Metallica that night.

@1:58 yessss! I believe they did, I recalled seeing The Cult as an opening act but couldn't remember for who. that's back when we had 2 or even 3 concerts a month, sometimes who opened for who gets cloudy. have to find my box of ticket stubs. First i was thinking Cult opened for the BonJovi show but I think that was Jetboy a truly craptastic band.

Who opened for Motley Crue in January '90? I want to say Warrant...

Anonymous said...

I never understood why TSO quit coming here. They seemed to have 6000+ people at the shows when they did.

Anonymous said...

I saw Jetboy open for Styper in Feb. '89. Stryper's sound rig blew out a few songs in and the show had around an hour delay.

Good show, though.

Look at some old tour date lists from the late 70s through the early 90s. Bands played every decent-sized city and multiple dates in larger cities. Virtually every major rock act would spend a full week of the tour in our area and play Jackson, Memphis, Biloxi, NOLA & Baton Rouge. Bon Jovi played everywhere BUT JXN on their "Slippery When Wet" tour including: Memphis, LR, Birmingham, Mobile, Biloxi, Monroe, NOLA, BR, Lake Charles, Shreveport, Lafayette, and Starkville TWICE.

Now, big acts will do 30 city tours and only hit ATL, Nashville & NOLA in these parts. Birmingham & Memphis don't even get all the shows anymore.

Speaking of Bon Jovi, was the bottle incident during the 1985 or 1989 show? I though the '89 show went off well?

Guns n Roses opened for Motley Crue in Jackson one time (believe it or not) but I recall that being in 1988

"And how many of you, along with me, walked out of Dylan's performance after he followed Merle, at the Coliseum a few years back?"

That was mind-boggling to see so many people walk out after a short set by the opening act and leave before the headliner even started. It was promoted heavily by the C&W radio stations in town as a Merle Haggard show.

If we are going to bring back memories...........I was a BIG fan of the Animals. They played the Coliseum about 1966 with the Gants as their opening act. When the Animals came on stage, redneck dumbasses in front started pelting them with wadded up paper cups and all kinds of crap. I was appalled. Eric Burdon threw the mike to the floor and they all walked off the stage. They did come back and finished the show after the promoter got the audience to act more civilized. By the way, Sid Herring and the Gants were fabulous!!!

I was also a big James Brown fan. My date and I went to his concert at the Coliseum about 1967 with two other couples (one of the guys was Charlie Meyers - remember all the Crown Vics in the 'hood with "Charlie Meyers Insurance" stickers??). We were the only white faces there. The two other couples got drunk and were the only people standing up in the audience and were dancing the Boogaloo during the song "Cold Sweat". Of course they stood out which evidently offended some blacks on the other side of the Coliseum. I could tell trouble was brewing when I saw a mob of hostile looking young dudes working their way towards us. My date and I got up and left. On the way down a cop told us to get the Hell outta there as there was going to be a riot. It didn't happen thanks to some cooler blacks that got in between the mob and our friends.

@4:55....it wasn't mind boggling at all. And Dylan was not the headliner. Merle was. Merle put on a fabulous 'opening act'. Dylan followed with a mind-numbing show of mediocre lights and rackety keyboards. Either he was stoned out of his gourd or the electrics were ajar.

I also remember when The Bill Gaither show packed the venue every other year. But now they won't come here at all except to bring an entourage of five to a church.

Could it possibly have anything to do with the killings/shootings in the immediate vicinity. Surely not. Concert goers are numb to that reality.

No opener, this was the Black Album tour. The Cult opened for them on the ...And Justice for All tour a few years prior.

I was 12 at my first Merallica show backstage with my dad! I was in heaven! This show kicked ass! Jason Newsted and Kirk hammet took the time to talk to me after show and lars tossed me his shirt. Too bad Metallica doesn't sound like this anymore! Stood next to Wayne Harrison & my dad the entire show!

@ 7:37,
I was at that show. Bought the tix to see The Cult, didn't care for Metallica. Ian put on a thirty minute slurred word fest (don't know if he was just drunk or what) and when they left the stage, my future former wife and I left the building.

Metallica; backstage at age twelve with dad, in Heaven, kickin' ass. You're dad should have had you on the baseball field. Then you wouldn't be looking for an apartment in Fondren and driving a '76 Volvo.

Jackson's shithole status is well known in the industry. Build a new 12-18000 seating facility on one of the interstates in Madison or Rankin county and the metro will be back in the game.

@8:52
I remember The Cult opening with "The Phoenix", bringing out Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), and generally kicking ass. Ian said "Tell it to Metallica baby" as they left the stage after their criminally short set.
Those were the good ol' days....

The Cult was really hot at that time, but they started the tour before Sonic Temple got big. By the time they got to Jackson, they were every bit as popular as Metallica, and probably more. I went solely to see the Cult, and didn't like Metallica. But Metallica didn't want to be upstaged, so they cut the Cult's set to like 30 minutes, and it sounded like they made them use speakers they found at a garage sale. Hence, the comment from Ian to the crowd to "Tell it to Metallica" as they left the stage with everyone screaming for more. I remember lots of people leaving after the Cult played. I stuck around and, with all the speakers turned on and probably an actual engineer on duty, Metallica sounded AMAZING. Still not a fan after that, though, because I thought it was pretty classless what they did to the Cult.

The Cult was scheduled to come back and play a show at Hal & Mal's around 95, but Ian overdosed a few days before. He did that a lot.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
