By the time they got to Jackson, they were every bit as popular as Metallica, and probably more. I went solely to see the Cult, and didn't like Metallica. But Metallica didn't want to be upstaged, so they cut the Cult's set to like 30 minutes, and it sounded like they made them use speakers they found at a garage sale. Hence, the comment from Ian to the crowd to "Tell it to Metallica" as they left the stage with everyone screaming for more. I remember lots of people leaving after the Cult played. I stuck around and, with all the speakers turned on and probably an actual engineer on duty, Metallica sounded AMAZING. Still not a fan after that, though, because I thought it was pretty classless what they did to the Cult.

The Cult was scheduled to come back and play a show at Hal & Mal's around 95, but Ian overdosed a few days before. He did that a lot. They played the Coliseum about 1966 with the Gants as their opening act. When the Animals came on stage, redneck dumbasses in front started pelting them with wadded up paper cups and all kinds of crap. I was appalled. Eric Burdon threw the mike to the floor and they all walked off the stage. They did come back and finished the show after the promoter got the audience to act more civilized. By the way, Sid Herring and the Gants were fabulous!!!

I was also a big James Brown fan. My date and I went to his concert at the Coliseum about 1967 with two other couples (one of the guys was Charlie Meyers - remember all the Crown Vics in the 'hood with "Charlie Meyers Insurance" stickers??). We were the only white faces there. The two other couples got drunk and were the only people standing up in the audience and were dancing the Boogaloo during the song "Cold Sweat". Of course they stood out which evidently offended some blacks on the other side of the Coliseum. I could tell trouble was brewing when I saw a mob of hostile looking young dudes working their way towards us. My date and I got up and left. On the way down a cop told us to get the Hell outta there as there was going to be a riot. It didn't happen thanks to some cooler blacks that got in between the mob and our friends.Capt Wmnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2447438783001404385.post-42579356338322822712016-03-16T16:55:31.710-05:002016-03-16T16:55:31.710-05:00"And how many of you, along with me, walked o..."And how many of you, along with me, walked out of Dylan's performance after he followed Merle, at the Coliseum a few years back?"

That was mind-boggling to see so many people walk out after a short set by the opening act and leave before the headliner even started.
