Tyrone Hendrix announces run to replace Yarber

Tyrone Hendrix issued the following press release:

TYRONE HENDRIX ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR WARD SIX COUNCILMAN

JACKSON, MS — South Jackson native Tyrone Hendrix has formally announced his candidacy for the vacated Ward Six City Council seat.

A grassroots organizer for nonprofits and political campaigns, Hendrix has been dedicated to organizing around social and economic issues, and supporting candidates who are committed to improving the communities in which we live. Hendrix's political involvement includes working with former candidate for Mayor of Jackson, Jonathan Lee; former gubernatorial candidate and Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree; and President Barack Obama. Hendrix also served as state director for Organizing for America (OFA), the grassroots effort that grew out of the 2008 Obama campaign.

“I’ve known from a very young age that I wanted to feel like I was making a positive impact on society, and I found my calling as an organizer. My organizing career began working in low to moderate income communities, helping them to harness their collective power to affect change,” said Hendrix.
“I grew up in South Jackson, went to school here, and spent almost every evening of my teenage years playing basketball at the Southwest YMCA on Flowers Drive. My wife and I have chosen to raise our children here, and we experience the same challenges that everyone in this community faces. I am running for city council because we believe in the people and potential of our community,” he continued.

Tyrone Hendrix is managing partner of Hendrix & Dometz Organizational Solutions, LLC. He is a graduate of Forest Hill High School and earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Jackson State University. Tyrone and his wife Ercilla Dometz-Hendrix have two children, Farah and Tyrone II.

The Special Election for the Ward Six city council seat is June 17, 2014. In the event a candidate does not receive 50 percent of the vote, there will be a runoff election July 1, 2014.

Good Choice. Glad Yarber got elected. If he does a good job he needs to give Bennie a run for his money.

another "organizer", huh? shades of alinsky (or haley)...check out the chapter entitled "the education of an organizer" in alinsky's "rules for radicals" (1971) at this link:

um, the plus is that he worked for Jonathan lee...the minus is that he worked for that crook johnny dupree from Hattiesburg. I would like to hear him "splain" that contradiction!

Tyrone Hendrix has probably never heard of Alinsky whoever, and has been an organizer in the sense of participating at a strategic level in national, statewide, and municipal campaigns. He is self-made, smart, well educated, and would love nothing more than to work with folks of all races, backgrounds, party affiliations, etc., to try and move what is apparent to anyone with a brain a stagnant city and state forward. BTW, his wife is Hispanic. AND NO, he has never, ever been a cog in the wheel of the Bennie machine or any other political machine in Mississippi. He is actually a rather moderate Democrat, probably fairly socially conservative in many ways.

I agree. Tyrone is the type AA the city and state need. A class act for sure.

MEMO TO ANY POTENTIAL WARD 6 CANDIDATE

The Jackson Free Press endorsement won't help you at the polls.

"Partners" Donna Ladd and Todd Stauffer can't move the electoral needle in your favor in any single precinct in Jackson and clearly not in Ward 6. Not one. Not anywhere.

Don't for a minute buy Donna Ladd's absurdities about needing an interview and disregard any summons to meet with their "Editorial Board" considering the overblown and overvalued "JFP Endorsement".

Because it is all pure shit. You will garner more net votes walking a precinct, any given precinct in Ward 6, than you will wasting your time with the JFP.

The Jackson Free Press interview will give your opponents fodder to use against you in the campaign. Should you not be their endorsee, Donna Ladd will direct the staff of the JFP to write "stories" that twist, spin and distort the words you used in any interview to attack and undermine your candidacy.

Seek the Jackson Free Press endorsement at your own risk. But remember the vast majority of candidates who receive their endorsement lose on election day.

Tyrone Hendrix is part of the bright new generation of go-getters on the ascent in Jackson politics who genuinely want to revitalize this city.

I don't care if he is giving away donuts covered in cream cheese, he has community organizer written all over him.....and to boast about ties to the GREAT community organizer is a turn off.

I will vote against any person who's claim to fame is "I am a former community organizer". We have had one of those in the white house for the past 6 years and it has been a complete nightmare. Join the grassroots effort to draft Foghorn Leghorn.

8:10 pm and 6:57 am, Please try to be politically realistic. Wait until you know who the other candidates are and can assess their chances of winning before you start bashing one who might be the best of the lot.
Would you vote for some murderer who didn't vote for Obama because his felony conviction wasn't erased yet by Haley?
Grow up!

I've personally known Tyrone for about 3 years now and the guy is nothing but class. He's done very well with his campaign business, seems to have a genuine passion and care for the betterment of Jackson, and has a calm and analytical temperament that will be an asset to that council. We're all products of our environment. There aren't a whole lot of community organizers that come from Eastover just like there aren't a whole lot of JA members that grew up on Woody Dr. Remember this Ward is 85% AA, do you expect him to put up a shrine to Barry Goldwater on his push card? You guys must be giving Chris McDaniel campaign advice

He looks familiar. He did run for this seat before?!? He had a real hard job trying to sell Mayor Dupree, the river polluter, to the state. I hope the League of Women Voters will put on a debate at Forest Hill High like they have in the past.

um,@7:38 AM..being fearful of present or former "community organizers" has absolutely nothing to do with "growing up" as you charge. "Community organizers" are a rag tag group of radical militants such as acorn scattered across this country who's sole purpose is to agitate, intimidate and force some left wing mumbo jumbo agenda on the majority of us. As I previously stated, I will never vote for a "community organizer" no matter how childish it may seem to you.

I like 'community organizers'. In the boarded up parts of the city you have generational poverty and social problems. Even the departments of the city, social workers, and the sitting council member neglect them. It takes a positive attitude to even call the police to report a crime. The only organizer in these parts is the churchman as the schoolteacher who serves their children is likely to be a nonresident.

I'm curious, how many of you posters live in Ward 6? Oh? How about Jackson? No? So, who cares what your thoughts are on the "great" community organizer? No vote, no voice. Banter can exit stage left. Let the people of Ward 6 decide for themselves who they want as their representative. Hopefully now they can actually start seeing things happen for THEM and not just personal resume building items for the councilperson in that seat. Ward 6 residents, study the candidates, research the candidates, and decide for yourself who you think best represents YOUR interests.

I think the "community organizer" will represent us in Ward 6 at the table. He's my horse.

I live in Jackson as do many of these posters that i know. Most of them live in Northeast Jackson fondren and belhaven so they have a voice!

I live in Ward 7 and have a long border with the old Yarber ward.

I live in Ward 6. I voted for Yarber for councilman, and he received my vote in the initial and runoff election for mayor.

I, too, am concerned about someone who's claim to fame is "community organizing". Too often, this is someone who does not have what it takes to succeed in a real job. (A la' Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, et al). We desperately need someone on the council who will be a friend to business, because we DESPERATELY NEED sales tax dollars. There is NO MORE ROOM to further escalate property taxes, car tags, and water rates in this city!!!!

My concern is that every "community organizer" I know of is completely ignorant when it comes to economic and business know-how, and it shows in their results.

I will reserve judgment on Mr. Hendrix until I have the opportunity to research what he DOES (not what he "says" -- what HE HAS ACTUALLY DONE). I care nothing about how nice someone may be, because nice people with good intentions can absolutely wreck a community... or a country.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
