CNN's John King interviewed Governor Barbour about the pardons a few days ago:

The MDOC Handbook prohibits Trustee Status for capital murder, murder attempted capital murder or attempted murder. The governors office is saying these were not trustees but minimum security inmates. WOW what a play on words to let murders get back on the streets for polishing the door knobs at the mansion (as one inmate testified was his job). This goes a lot deeper than being a good door knob polisher.

Beavis to Butthead: " They said knob polisher"
heh heh......

I still can't come to grips with this. Rhetorical now, but... "WHAT was he thinking?"

8 years of awesome, down the tubes.

I agree with 5:25.

But, 4:56: "The MDOC Handbook prohibits Trustee Status for capital murder, murder attempted capital murder or attempted murder."

MS does not have a crime called attempted murder. Where in the MDOC Handbook does it say this?

I'm just a citizen and a taxpayer, but in my view the release of murderers, rapists, etc. back into the population by a Governor elected by the people is beyond heinous. Now grieving families will suffer even more than previously, and will have to fear repercussions from the murderers. Citizens in general will be endangered. It is beyond my comprehension how anybody could do such a thing.

How does Chris Epps manage to fly totally under the radar on this entire matter?

Mississippi indeed DOES have a crime labeled "attempted murder", its under the general attempt statute; however, its almost never been used because the max sentence is only ten years. prosecutors charge aggravated assault instead because the max is 20 years.

For the record, Daryl Neely is a pathetic buffoon. Dumb, would be an understatement. Always wondered how he got that position- oh wait... nevermind.

Did it ever occur to him to get the Assistant AG's words in writing? Especially for something as serious pardons.

Neely falls under the 'keep your enemies close' section in the guidebook, sorta like Biden and Hillary. Pay 'em well, fatten 'em up, keep them occupied and they leave you alone.

But it won't work with the angriest of the angry like Chok-Me, Tisdale or Lieberman.

4:08,

Exactly how is any of this on Epps?

Haley should have been more than a little concerned to be handed so many pardon petitions to sign ( if he relied entirely on staff).

I find it inexplicable how someone with such an abundance of political insight has suddenly become so blind .

He continues to make it worse.

Haley, if you are listening, say, " I made a mistake and should have done a more careful review rather than rely on recommendations and my personal impressions. Some of those I pardoned were deserving, but clearly some were not and I'm dismayed. I should have given this more time."

People can forgive you for being human. It's harder to forgive you for trying "to fool the people".

Is there a reason for us to continue to beat this dead horse? Haley pardoned some criminals. I'm certainly not a Haley apologist. I don't know of a single person who agreed with all of his pardon decisions, but they were his to make and he made them. Phil not only has pledged not to pardon any murderers, but he's suspended the mansion trusty program so he won't be tempted. The king is dead, long live the king. Let's move on...Bill Billingsley

Bill
Haley has and will continue to try and have input in the political system here and as well as nationally.

He should lose all credibility personally and for those around him who continue to be a groupie.

Its a story because we have an active lawsuit in Hinds County and several other actions filed as well. Not to mention you have one guy who can not be found.

"How does Chris Epps manage to fly totally under the radar on this entire matter?"

Perhaps because Chris Epps was not the Governor. He is a will and pleasure employee of the Governor. Epps is an operator, not a policy maker. His job is not to question the Governor's orders, only to carry them out.

Bill, if Haley had simply left it as you did, ," It was within my power as Governor to give pardons and I did", it'd be easier to move on.
Instead, Haley's issued absolutely ignorant statements like the " crime of passion" one and incredulous rationalizations. As a result, he is making, not just himself, but our entire State look stupid.
My biggest gripe with the MS GOP is this inexplicable need to defend those party members who screw up at the expense of the party's credibility. You can disavow the actions or words and advise the party member who made a mistake to just admit making a mistake. Defending the party member becomes defending the actions or words.I don't think that is smart and it's certainly not in the long term interest of the party.
This " he may be an idiot but he's our idiot so let's defend him by defending his actions and words" is so out of hand, IMHO,the the GOP is ending up with some real nut cases running for office and influencing debate. Bill , I know you know how crazy the Personhood admendment and reconstituting a committee on UnAmerican activities is and yet the GOP is embracing the nutjobs behind such insanity.
The Democrats did that kind of thing in the 60s and 70s . Is there no learning curve in politics?
Ignore , placate or redirect the crazies or let them be hoisted on their own petard , don't empower them.
There aren't enough independents in this state to matter but the GOP is going to lose a national election they should win handily and 6 GOP crazies have held the GOP hostage in Washington when they could have gotten 70% of what they wanted.
This isn't working.

It's a good thing Mississippi doesn't have an attempted murder statute! Also none of the trustees meet the statutory requirement for "capital murder."

Kingfish, can you tell us at what monetary cost, thus far, it has been to taxpayers for Hood's fighting certain pardons, in particular, the tracking down of the pardoned convicted murderer was found in Wyoming with his girlfiend who had also visited him numerous times at the mansion?

I'm really upset about Haley's decision. OK - Let's pretend for a moment that these murderers are rehabilitated; so you want to give them the opportunity to get a job (which is great), but to HUNT? (are you kidding me)? I don't care who they are or were, you don't give a convicted murder a gun under any circumstance. We might as well house the sex offenders next to the elementary schools and make alcohol free to the public.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
