Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
Based on complaints received from citizens of Rankin County, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into “Kratom” being sold at local convenience stores. To protect the citizens, Rankin County Board of Supervisors in March of 2024 passed county ordinance prohibiting the use, purchase, possession, distribution, sale or offering for sale of synthetic cocaine and kratom in the unincorporated areas of Rankin County.
After this ordinance was passed, a copy of the ordinance was hand delivered to all convenience stores in the county by deputies. Investigators from the sheriff’s office attempted buys and audited all stores in the unincorporated areas of Rankin County. The operation has resulted in approximately 2030 packets of Kratom being seized with an estimated value of $48,267.12. Store employees who made illegal sales to the undercover agents have been charged with an ordinance violation punishable by a fine up to $1,000.00 and/or six (6) months imprisonment in the county jail. All Kratom products seized from the stores will be held as evidence until the resolution of the cases, then destroyed. If a citizen observes any store selling illegal products in the county, he can contact the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department at 601-825-1480.
