The Justice Department said nice try in response to Jody Owens' ambush in U.S. District Court last month.
A federal grand jury indicted Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, Mayor Lumumba, and City Councilman Aaron Banks on public corruption charges in 2024. Former Councilwoman Angelique Lee and insurance mogul Marve Smith pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit bribery in 2024 as well.
Owens filed a motion to dismiss with a supporting memorandum and 47 exhibits January 26 in U.S. District Court. The Justice Department almost immediately asked U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan, III to seal the filing the same day, claiming it violated a protective order.
Judge Jordan granted the request and sealed the filings the next day but not before most of the local media downloaded the motion and the supporting exhibits.
JJ published several of the exhibits with redactions. The exhibits contained raw reports as well as the names of federal agents.
The Justice Department fired back with a new filing yesterday:
So, JJ would love to report what the Justice Department filed with the Court but that is kind of hard to do when the filing is sealed.
Attorney Rob McDuff recently filed a motion to withdraw as counsel for Owens.
Stay tuned.

F.A.F.O., Jody.
Is defense attorney McDuff tired of Owens's BS? Defending a sitting DA on criminal charges must be like two tom cats in a gunny sack.
Rob McDuff filed to withdraw as Owens counsel? That'll make an impact!
Owens' cigar money peters out- McDuff Bails. Look for more defense counsel withdrawals in the near future. There is not enough garbage can $$ to make it through trial.
As a "part-time" DA Owens must not make very much.
who does Dennis Sweet represent in this matter?
His own interests.
Did Jody use up all of the slush fund money in his office safe?
I hear bad habits can be expensive and not conducive to good financial planning.
When you lose Rob something is up.
I highly doubt McDuff bailed over money. It is a lot more likely he bailed because, as another commenter stated, he's tired of the B.S.
Resign already and quit stealing our money you clown.
3:19 you made me laugh out loud.
The motion to withdraw said he had a scheduling conflict for trial.
IF Rob had a conflict with the trial, he sure waited a long time to disclose it. The trial dates have been set for months now. Granted, something personal might have come up recently that created a conflict - but otherwise, that sounds like a 'good reason' to list, no matter the real reason.
If Federal agents names were released Jody should be charged for that & his attorney also!
Bufkin truly lowered the bar with this filing, exposing confidential information and really backed himself and his pathetic “alcoholic” corrupt client into a dark corner. Law schools will someday use this as a case study in criminal defense on what not to do! Jody is toast and so is Gary’s legal reputation.
@4:32….me too!!!
I've looked up Bufkin's cases. He only has one other criminal case. Want to guess who the client was? One of the News.
No one here is going to see a jury verdict. Plea deal. Flip on others….on other matters.
KF @9:32, I noticed earlier last week, a couple of baby attorneys entered a notice of appearance on behalf of Jody. Newly minted associates of the esteemed Bufkin Criminal Defense firm. Timing is everything…
Gerry's (dumbass)
9:35 - what others? Jody, Lumoomboo are the stars of this show.
" Bufkin has dedicated a significant portion of his practice to mediation. He genuinely enjoys the art of negotiation and the conflict resolution process. As an advocate, Mr. Bufkin has successfully mediated thousands of claims on behalf of clients, including defendants and plaintiffs. This balanced perspective, along with 25 years litigation experience and a natural ability to connect with litigants, has resulted in hundreds of successful mediations."
I suspect Rob McDuff finally realized there is no righteous cause here, just a public official with personal problems who got caught trying to make the big time in a crooked way.
He just happens to be black in the capital city of Mississippi, but those facts are irrelevant to this case.
I’d have hired Feel Brant’s attorney…
Bufkin is a graduate of the Naval Academy, served as a police officer in jackson before and during law school. Worked as an AUSA.
Big D going to walk him right up out of there… Lord willing.
