D.L. Gardner: Simplify Educational Bureaucracy

Education needs are best funded and administered at state and local levels as opposed to one-size fits all. Teachers and students’ needs drive wise curriculum choices. Teachers and students’ relationships are the most foundational predictors of educational successes.

I begin every semester telling students that every student in our class can do something better than any other student. In other words, some students need more help learning what other students already know how to do.

Before we begin class we need to get to know each other. Like most teachers I want to know my students names, what they prefer to be called. You might be surprised. It doesn’t matter to me. I call them whatever they prefer and ask them why they’re famous. Usually, this opens a dialogue about interests and accomplishments, or sometimes feelings of inadequacies. I begin to know them.

Critical thinking is foundational for all learning. Few people know how to think critically or to practice thinking critically. We all get stuck in our own roles and beliefs.

Last week I commented that most people in our class were open minded, right? Yes, that was the consensus. Nobody in our class was closed minded, right? Right! “Could anyone persuade you that your strong belief is wrong?” I could almost hear the gears turning.

In fact, most of the students realized they were closed minded about some things! I commended them for being smart enough to realize they were closed minded. All critical thinkers know they’re closed minded about some things. If they’re not closed minded they’re not critical thinkers.

For years I have asked students to lay their phones and watches, etc. on the table at the front of the room. I am giving them an hour of freedom! It’s always give or take when asking students to reduce distractions in the classroom. Some thank me at the end of the semester. Policy makers still struggle with this.

We talk about how difficult it is to communicate. “Communication is the problem to the answer.” Listening critically is the most difficult communication skill by far. We must learn to listen first to understand. Most of us only listen to reply. This is not a good trait for one interviewing for a job, or for one’s first day on a job.

Mrs. Wilson, my high school algebra teacher, gave us a math problem in class. We all struggled to solve it. I asked her some questions about the problem, and she said we needed to know how the solution would solve the problem before we could figure it out. Oh. That became my “go-to” in solving life’s problems.

Education was one of Donald Trump’s planks in his platform. Those who challenged first said, “We need more money.” President Trump appointed Linda E. McMahon Secretary of Education and told her she should eventually “put herself out of a job.” Secretary McMahon first sought to understand what Trump wanted her to do. Then her department developed plans to spread $194.72 billion according to states’ needs.

March 20, 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order returning administration of education to parents and local communities. Who is most qualified to identify needs of students than parents and teachers? America’s children do not need political teachers’ unions to drain federal dollars in Washington.

This is incoherent and nonsensical. I want that two minutes of my life back, please.

It's hard to believe these sentences are actually not written by someone else. It's well written and generally accurate.
Every state has their own departments of education and local school boards. And, frankly, that be the best place to start "culling".
The problem is that many states have don't have enough money to support schools in small towns and villages. Now repairs and building costs make funding difficult. One wealthy Mississippi family gave discounts to teachers for their supplies and bought band instruments a public school.
The main responsibility on the federal level to distribute funds for grants to fund maintenance and repairs of existing schools, build new schools and support colleges and universities. That's all of our country and all states and all local communities.
Mississippi would never have been able to have the number of Institutes of Higher Learning or new schools without those federal grants.
It wasn't until August 3,2018 that our students could be awarded a Phi Beta Kappa key and compete against all other school grads who had one when searching for a job or applying to be an engineer or doctor or lawyer. Since it was MS State who qualified first, I would have thought D.L. knew that.
We could also have done a bit better with "separate but equal"...not all communities did. The wealthy religions had private schools in communities for decades for that reason. It took longer for smaller religions to " pool their resources".

The theory is fine. What I'd like to know is what D.L. would cut? Which departments have too many employees? What grant funding to the states would you eliminate? How much money could we save by eliminating sports or music departments? Few schools have a track team or golf team or tennis team maybe we could do without basketball or wrestling too.

Other than typing, public school taught nothing that’s ever been of any use to me. It was 12 years of busywork, 12 years of government daycare. After I graduated from public school and my schooling ended, I began to get educated. Educational bureaucracy doesn’t need to be simplified; it needs to be excised like a malignancy.

"This guy is one of the most close-minded columnists I've ever read", as opposed to being so open-minded all your sense has fallen out?

Agreed, just listen to Fox News or any other right wing op-ed and you’ll know every position DL will parrot. He’s a propagandist’s dream.

10:28 am Where did you go to school? After learning to read and write and math, including algebra and geometry. I learn spelling and grammar, history (U.S. and World), music, drama, and art as well. I took French for 5 years. I took sociology (the study of how societies rise and fall) and economics (we all pick stocks to pretend and invest in and did a household budget with for our families). We took science and had a science project every year. We learned to do proper research and write footnoted term papers. This was elementary to high school. In college, I learned Spanish and statistics, art history and P.E. added dance and table games added as well as a learning the rules of good sportsmanship to appreciate all the games common in the U.S. We all picked a major junior year. I went on to grad school. We had literature and read the classics. Did you know Don Quixote was written in 3 volumes? We also were given Amy Vanderbilts book of etiquette and were tested on it.
So...you came out of the womb knowing it all? Wow! So what was your first book? And, when did you start reading the newspaper?

You clowns will take anything negative about Trump, and run with it. Even if it hasn't been verified by a reputable source. Clown on, because that's all you are, clowns.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
