Barksdale Today's Jerry Mitchell questioned whether Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey tried to obtain favorable treatment for his son-in-law when he was arrested for a DUI in Covington County in 2023. Mr. Mitchell reported:
The Mississippi Highway Patrol suspended the state trooper who failed to obey a subpoena to testify in a DUI case involving the current son-in-law of Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey, Mississippi Today has learned. That son-in-law, Steven Frederick Jr., and another law enforcement officer are now charged with manslaughter in an unrelated case in 2022 while both were Capitol Police officers. On March 12, 2023, Frederick totaled his Capitol Police Ford F-150 on U.S. 49 South in Covington County, just past the Simpson County line. When a trooper arrived, he told Frederick in a dashcam video obtained by Mississippi Today that he wanted to give the Capitol Police officer a handheld breathalyzer test “to see how high you are.” Frederick flunked the test with a .15 score, nearly twice the legal limit of .08. He was handcuffed and arrested for DUI....
After Frederick was jailed, Covington County Sheriff Darrell M. Perkins released him without bond into Bailey’s custody. He said Bailey told him he was taking Frederick to a hospital. State authorities have learned that a prosecutor, who wasn’t from Covington County, said Bailey called him and asked him what would happen if a trooper didn’t show up for a DUI hearing and the prosecutor replied that the case would be dismissed. Bailey has denied these allegations. “Whoever said that I talked to a prosecutor is a liar,” he told WLBT. “That is a completely false lie.” Authorities have also learned that after the wreck, Bailey reportedly telephoned Frederick’s supervisor at Capitol Police, Porfirio Grimaldo, telling the supervisor that he should keep Frederick on the force because “the DUI has been taken care of.” Rest of article
The Rankin County Sheriff hotly disputed Mitchell's reporting in a statement provided to this website.
Sheriff Bryan Bailey has never contacted a trooper, MHP employee, DPS employee, Capitol Police employee, Attorney General’s Office employee, Covington County Judge or Covington County Prosecutor in any attempt to ask for consideration on any charges, citation or employment related issues regarding Steven Fredrick. The DUI case was dismissed because of the trooper's failure to appear in court.
Sheriff Bailey did respond to an accident involving Steven Fredrick acting in his capacity as a Scott County Deputy in September of 2024. The accident occurred in the community of Polkville just outside of Rankin County. Deputy Fredrick was injured during the accident and Sheriff Bailey transported him to a hospital in Rankin County for treatment. A State Trooper met Stephen Fredrick at the hospital and interviewed him in reference to the accident. He was left with family members at the hospital and I returned to work.

does anyone see a pattern?
what's with the no consequences culture these days.......deflect spin blame generation.
in 35 years of reporting on mississippi dog manure.... jerry mitchel is eventually proven right 99% of the time.
jerry understand s the principal that circumstances dont lie ,,,,,,,,,,but people lie ALL the time.
Bryan Bailey needs to be in jail along with the rest of the Goon Squad. Unfortunately, he apparently has enough goods on the powers-that-be to prevent that from happening.
MHP suspended a trooper for not showing up to court??? I thought not showing up was their standard operating procedure.
Bailey obviously thinks he can do anthing and get away with anthing. He must have some major dirt on some people
Changed the policy.
Bailey says "He's a good guy" ??? I would be telling my daughter to get the hell away from this loser! NikNar mafia strikes again!! What was a Capitol Police F150 doing in Covington County anyway ?? Who is running Capitol Police?
Governor’s phone 601-359-3150 to call & demand Tate to ask for Sheriff Baileys resignation. Board of Supervisors in Rankin County cannot do anything since Bailey was elected, only Tate can. The MHP Loftin being suspended without pay sucks. I believe if he had testified he still would be punished. Much like Dean Scott drawing two paychecks. What msg does this send to every other LEO? Enough is enough!
Rules and laws are for the middle class and the poors. If you are well connected, rich and from the "right family" then consequences do not apply to you. From Brian Bailey's crooked farm, crooked Sheriff's office and twisted sense of right and wrong running unopposed to our current president assisting in the trafficking and exploitation of young girls. As Donald stated in one of his depositions, "When you are rich and famous, they let you do it, right or wrong they let you do it."
We let them do it because we do not follow God, common sense or the idea that societies grow great when old men plant trees in which they will not be around to enjoy the shade. Working hard for future generations because it's the right thing to do. For them and for us.
We are leaving our children with debt, corruption, cynicism and a need to knock all the pieces off the chess board and start over.
His day is coming with the feds.
I bet Sheriff Bailey has warm feelings now that he knows that someone let Mitchell what he had been doing on the down low tyo help his son-in-law.
Bailey has well established himself as a dirty cop. Lying to the Grand Jury, covering for dirty deputies years of abuse on citizens, stealing county property, misuse of County funds. At what point does the Rankin County, or State leaders do their jobs, and act to end this malfeasance, and prosecute Sheriff Bryan Bailey for the multiple crimes he has committed? What is it that makes them afraid to charge Bailey for repeated crimes against the citizens and Rankin County itself?
No idea if Bailey did or didn't do what is alleged, but everything Jerry Mitchell reports should be viewed with a healthy amount of skepticism.
AOC, thanks for checking in, or is this Schumer?
Huh? Translate please.
Bryan Bailey did not need an attorney to tell him that the trooper failing to show up for a hearing would result in a DUI charges being dismissed. I seriously doubt that he made that phone call. Bailey does need to resign though because the dominos just continue to keep falling against him. He should never have involved himself in his son in law's multiple DUI arrests.
Those folks in Niknar love their crooked redneck sheriff. He's a good ol boy.
New deputies are immediately told: "What you see here, hear here, or read here, stays here!"
Jerry Mitchell is known for throwing strikes, not balls. If Bryan Bailey is telling you Mitchell's making it up, who seems more likely to be lying, the journalist with three decades of credibility on his side, or the sheriff with six people in prison for human rights violations and a litany of other accusations pointed his way?
10:02 Our current president has done more to stop the trafficking of young children than any president and person in history by shutting down the border. The one which Biden allowed over 200, 000 children to cross without an adult and for which the Biden administration could not account for. Facts matter, quit spouting off garbage....
Looking forward to the next Sheriff election in Rankin county!
I know nothing-
I'm starting to wonder if this Bailey just ain't right.
Jerry walked into the middle of their Jim Crow circle jerk and recorded Rankin County District 4 Supervisor Steve Gaines pooping out his mouth. They won't give Mississippi Today the records to exonerate the sheriff but let's treat the Pulitzer Winner of skepticism.
Board can stop his pay. Suspend him, ask him to step down, take a vote - they've done nothing other than give him an additional job just like chief dean scott. Board attorney Craig Slay wrote a nice deceptive letter to AG asking if they could pay this poor guy on staff a lil extra.
Problem is everyone involved these run down apartments in this situation is fake rich. Bailey can't afford the legal bill and can't live on his salary like many of his deputies. Remember the goon squad burglarized homes for years and stole everyone's belongings.
LEO not showing up happens often. I have benefitted twice by bringing large scale drawings of intersections to discuss a ticket I disputed, by first meeting with the prosecuting attorney before the proceedings and by sitting in the front row with the mounted drawings facing the LEO, who sat on a bench in front of Court. The cops sat for a while and left, once in Jackson, once in Madison. IMO, they did not have the time or interest in a fight over a traffic ticket.
Ironic Rankin has a Bailey of the Bailey (recall Rumpole of the Bailey?).
Schultz: "I see nothink, hear nothink, know nothink, nothink."
Most folks in Rankin want him gone too. Maybe he can share a cell with your boy Antard.
suspended a week. big deal. why wasn't he fired.
@10:43 -
Does it SOUND true, though?
Mitchell’s a liberal D-bag with a heavy case of white guilt, but this isn’t editorializing.
Do you have any reason to doubt the veracity of his story?
Big news. Cops get off easier than us when they break the law.
I will care about this story, maybe, when once, just once, Jerry Mitchell reports on all the criminal sh going on in Jackson / Hinds County for the past 70 years plus, under the care of his beloved democrat / grievance industry axis.
If citizens know something then call 601-948-5000 and report it. You can do it anonymous & they are obligated to investigate . This could be your family member killed by drunk son in law, etc. Help these LEO’s that work hard & most are honest.
Is Jerry paying “witnesses” to make his story again?
to 10:43......only the feds got the jurisdiction, resources ,and guts to flush the toilet on what is brian baileys sheriffs department.
MHP - Male Hedonistic Pirates
Man. When I read these stories, I realize just how scary this backwoods s-hole really is. It reads like something in a John Grisham novel. Amazing investigative reporting.
Is this man still, after all this, allowed to be a Law Enforcement Officer?
to the nicknar redneck at 10:43.....................you dont know much about jerry mitchell do you?
The more we learn about Bryan Bailey, the worse he looks.
I don't know if he's a "bad cop," but he sure seems slimy as hell.
I'm dam amazed at how Brian Bailey can continue to deny any knowledge of the Goon Squad, his Son-in Law situation , the SO is in neutral to say the least. Answering Basic calls & wondering if the Boss will support them? No doubt Rankin SO didn't need the Goon Squad situation to say the least but when our Officers of the SO don't have the confidence that Rankin 1 will support their best Judgements it shows on a daily basis. It's time for 2 things, #1 the Feds to do their thing & tell their findings, #2 Rankin County Taxpayers to expect an SO that does something with regards to Law & Order. Brian, It's Time You step down & admit to your lies & deceptions, it's time we have Law & Order again. My guess is You pretended to Marry Ms Pennington to get her on County Insurance after pledging to do so to the former Sheriff to cover Insurance - Transplant cost that were forthcoming. I truly don't know how the Feds are so long discovering a pattern?
The only reason for him to make a phone call and ask a question he already knows the answer to, was to see if the person talked. Then he would know they outed themselves and don't make his trusted people list.
Also check & see what the State of Mississippi has a Judgement against his Daddy-in Law for in Rankin County. The Most revered Irl Dean Rhodes. Some spent time in Prison, some skated-
10:44
He 100% called a prosecutor ! My guess is he should have known the outcome , and he was trying to pull some old irl dean bullshit and get that particular rookie prosecutor to unknowingly put a call in for him.
Don't cut the suspended trooper any slack. He got paid off to not show up, knowing the case would be shitcanned if he didn't.
And this: "Frederick flunked the test with a .15 score, nearly twice the legal limit of .08. He was handcuffed and arrested for DUI...."
Since breathalyzer results are not admissible in court, that should read, "...arrested for suspicion of DUI..."
Hey, 10:22 A.M., His day is not coming. About three ( 3 ) Months ago President Trump ordered all Federal Justice Department Investigations into Police Corruption and complaints about Police Public Abuses to stop. His thoughts in doing this was that the Biden Administration along with Liberal Prosecutors and District Attorneys were unfairly targeting LawEnforcement Officers to the point that current Officers were afraid to properly do their jobs, and this was also causing a Nationwide shortage of new Police Recruits.
Seems like the focus is on Frederick's alleged drunk driving, but what was Frederick doing so far out of Capital police jurisdiction in a Capital Police vehicle when the wreck occurred? Also, was he on duty when the wreck occurred? I'm wondering if those questions will be just swept under the rug as well.
Spelt like it sound sonny boy
Mitchell has three decades of credibility? Bill Minor, the elder, is deceased or I would have sworn he posted that.
Mitchell actually has FOUR decades of stirring shit, fanning the race-card embers, keeping strife and hatred present and struggling for relevance.
All of a sudden now, realizing his years are limited and he's on an island of irrelevance, he's grasping for a life-vest (which has floated off).
But, leave it to Salter. He and Mitchell will ping-pong each other's bullshit til we're dizzy.
Apparently, those making negative comments about Bailey did not read the article. Bailey came right out and said, "I can swear on a stack of Bibles..." What more needs to be said or asked? The dude can swear he is as innocent as newborn lamb, no matter the accusation, and do it on not merely one or even two measly Bibles, but a STACK! of them. What more could any God-fearing Christian man or woman possibly want from the guy? I mean, BIBLES! A WHOLE STACK OF THEM! I guess if you're a sorry lying POS SOB, you don't give two hoots in hell about where your hand is when you tell yet another lie. But BIBLES! A STACK of them. It's a conundrum...
Frederick is very fortunate. Doesn't a serious accident require a drug test at most employers?
OK, let's start with the premise that Mitchell has never before published anything. He is a complete unknown to all and this is the first article he has ever written. What did Mitchell write in this article is untrue or can be reasonably disputed by anyone? Keep in mind that while the facts alleged by others and merely reported by Mitchell can be disputed, that is a different thing than disputing Mitchell's reporting of it being alleged.
Case in point, from the article: "State authorities have learned that a prosecutor, who wasn’t from Covington County, said Bailey called him and asked him what would happen if a trooper didn’t show up for a DUI hearing and the prosecutor replied that the case would be dismissed." This is not Mitchell alleging that Bailey or anyone said or did anything, it is Mitchell reporting that "authorities" learned "a prosecutor, who wasn't from Covington County, said..."
While some quibbling with some of the paraphrasing is probably fair (maybe Ms. Hutchinson didn't use the word "careened," etc.), the article seems a "tolerably fair" job of reporting the facts and allegations made, without "spinning" anything for or against Bailey or anyone else. When something covered with feathers waddles, quacks, flies, swims, wears a shirt with "I'M A DUCK, DAMMIT!" on it, and keeps telling you in no uncertain terms, "I'M A DUCK! I'M A DUCK!," a reasonable person can do little more than say, "Ya know, that might just be a duck..."
A judge absolutely does not have to dismiss a DUI just because the arresting officer didn't show up for court on the first trial date. That is a common misconception.
The case can be continued or it can even be tried based on the other evidence in the case.
The (alleged) call to the prosecutor was probably to verify that the prosecution would roll over on dismissing the case when the cop didn't show up.
And the denial is interesting. Who might he have left out of this very specific list of people he says he didn't contact:
"Sheriff Bryan Bailey has never contacted a trooper, MHP employee, DPS employee, Capitol Police employee, Attorney General’s Office employee, Covington County Judge or Covington County Prosecutor in any attempt to ask for consideration on any charges, citation or employment related issues regarding Steven Fredrick."
Bryan Bailey’s son-in-law is a good boy. He dindu nuffin
He might get drunk and run you over but he'd never kill nobody.
People try to act like a DUI is not a big deal and everyone gets them. that is BULLSHIT! I am 44 years old and not ONCE have I ever gotten a DUI! And yes I enjoy an occasional Jack and coke (or 3) and cannabis. I just don’t get behind the wheel. Because drunk drivers are as bad as chimos.
A grown man drinking Jack and Coke is a big deal too. Stop!
9:07
Good points !
And he absolutely did contact “a prosecutor” and a Capitol police employee !
Hello 9:07 - In court, a defendant is entitled to face his accuser. If there ain't no accuser present, there ain't no case.
3:04, The adverse party in a criminal case is the state. The defendant has a right to cross-examine the witnesses who testify against him.
Like I said, if there is ample evidence to proceed without the arresting officer's testimony, the case can still be tried.
3:04, If what you say is correct, then Todd Mardis would be a free man after convincing his wife to change her story.
That obviously didn't happen, because there was plenty of other evidence to prove he did it.
You are probably thinking of the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which says "in all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right...to be confronted with the witnesses against him."
Again, this refers to the right to confront witnesses. The "accuser" is actually the state, not the cop who made the arrest.
The peasant class would have the case continued by the judge.
I'll wait while you call 'the state' to the stand.
