Today is deadline day in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Much attention is focused on SB #2889. The bill transfers control of the Jackson water and sewer systems to a public utility authority governed by nine board members. However, the bill has not come up for consideration by the body.
The bill passed the Senate and the House Public Utilities Committee. Committee Chairman Sam Bounds did not present the bill today even though it was on the calendar. Speaker of the House Phillip Gunn skipped over the bill as he presented bills.
Kingfish note: Good job, knuckleheads. Good job.

Wow, I know the Governor said now isn't the time to pass it, but who knows what the environment will be in 10 years when Henifin leaves. More weakness by the Governor and Legislature worried about the racism labels?
Why? Why? Why? Now is the time. Say it will kick in when the feds move out. That way it wouldn’t do anything now but would prevent it from being turned back over to an incompetent mayor.
10 years? LMAO Ol' Ted is already looking for the off-ramp.
Henifin won't last that long. He is already ticked off that the State won't bow to his "Equity" billing.
I read that Henifin plans to sue if he can't base water billing on property values. Who in the heck would have to pay for this idiot to sue? I thought the judge that was over him said that he HAS to abide by State law.
What is this fool trying to do?
10 years? Isn't it one (1) year?
Isn't it one year for ol' Ted, or when he gets a gun shoved in his face and jacked, whichever comes first?
So the bill dies on a chickensh*t procedural move?
This kind of crap is why people despise politicians. If you aren't going to pass it, at least come out and say so and explain why to the public. This type of gamesmanship just invites people to assume the worst.
Wait! If we can't trust our government...
It's an election year. Tate is scared shitless of Brandon. Not the incompetent one...the other one.
Presley can score big if he's able to point to this bill as Tate's racism on display.
Better get Haley on the land-line.
You are nuts. If Hood couldn't win, Presley doesn't stand a chance.
6:50 - read the text first. This bill died in the House, not on the Governor's desk. Evidently the Speaker didn't like it - and you can bet your bottom that Phillip didn't kill it in order to help Tater.
Just like the Judge bill, HB1020; Delbert was scared of folks rioting in the streets, so he killed it, well, replaced it, with milktoast. The Senate version does nothing more than is done today, and has been happening for a decade or two
No balls at all on display in the Capitol.
If the city doesn’t want the state’s help, then let wash our hands of Jackson and move our capital to a civilized city.
Agree with you 6:59, Jim Hood was the Democrats best shot at a State wide election. Presley won't receive near the votes over the whole state that Hood did.
Why is our Legislature scared of Baby Chok? Because Antar will call them racist? Big freaking deal. He called the Jackson City Council (with 5 of 7 seats black) racist. He calls everyone racist. Antar will get six minutes on MSNBC and five minutes on CNN and then both networks will trot off to the next race baiter.
The Legislature should stand up to this buffoon, suffer six minutes of bad PR and actually help the people of Mississippi.
7:06- Didn't say it died on the governor's desk. The Gov sent clear signals that the time isn't right - Meaning he's afraid of the racism fallout and would not sign it. Message read and understood. Let it die.
9:28 - I believe you're wrong. Presley will come across as much more alert and likeable than Hood did. Hood came to the table with a ton of negative baggage, arrogance and puffery. Presley has none of that and will court cross-over votes and others who are tired of TrumpTater Salad.
So, which is it?
The race-baiters have the legislature by the balls... or...There are no balls in the legislature.
Can't be both.
Good
Well, it's officially dead. I know the Legislators don't actually think Jackson will ever be able to run a water system on its own, so what is it? Are they really that scared of the professional race hustlers? Are they okay with 200k Mississippians not having clean water again 15 years from now?
I’m glad it died. The legislature should simply point out Jackson pays less taxes than surrounding areas and receives more tax dollars. Legislature will not provide additional funds for free water to any municipalities. Best of luck. Same with capital improvement district. To the residents of Jackson take to the streets off meadowbrook not Capitol street. You elect your leaders then you can live with your decisions.
(plus one for 8:13)
Let the residents of Jackson march in protest, wear matching t-shirts and release balloons if they don't like the out of control crime.
They do that for the other concerns they are mad at. So I think it fair to say they are okay with the way things are going. Let them enjoy the city they built and leave the rest of us out of it.
No leader is asking for real help for Jackson.
They ARE asking for real cash.
If the voters are too dumb to know the difference and elect better, then let them have what they clearly want.
So, the Country Club of Jackson can choose to be in charge of its water, but the State won't dare help regular Jacksonians have a competent governing structure for their water system. What a time to be alive!
Even crazier 11:10...The CCJ can opt out, the State can refuse to help Jackson and the City Leaders then praise this as a victory because they actively lobbied AGAINST the State's help.
Crazy indeed, what a time to be alive.
We clearly know that many decisions Tater makes is politically motivated like most politicians running for office. A prime example is the sudden change of heart of medicaid "extension" of postpartum benefits so he can scream with his lacoste bullhorn that he is a pro-life conservative.
11:10, you said "So, the Country Club of Jackson can choose to be in charge of its water, but the State won't dare help regular Jacksonians have a competent governing structure for their water system. What a time to be alive!
By saying Jackson needs a competent governing structure for its water system, you seem to acknowledge that Jackson does not have a competent governing structure and hasn't for some time now. But it's not just the water system. Jackson's incompetent governing structure is why it has all the problems it presently has.....failing schools, dilapidated streets, out of control record crime, an inability to provide consistent and safe drinking water, sewers emptying into the river, businesses leaving, etc...
But contrary to what you typed, the State did dare to help Jackson have a competent governing structure for their water system, i.e. by proposing a regional utility district that would be run by someone other than the City which has quite clearly failed in that duty. But the Mayor and Black Caucus screamed bloody murder and opposed it. Blame them for not getting a competent body to manage our water when Jackson has shown it cannot do so itself. They would rather the City, that has failed miserably at the job, to keep doing it instead of getting someone competent in here to do it for us.
504 - Gov didn't send a 'clear' message, he sent his regular 'unclear' message. He said it needed to be done, but that this bill MIGHT be a few years too early or a year too late.
When over the past four years has the House leadership given a damn about what the Governor thought, anyway? Generally the Speaker was looking for a way to stick it up the Governor's rear end. Why would you think that Speaker Gunn would kill a bill on the calander in order to 'help' the Governor?
Obviously you are looking for an out for someone, or else a way to blame crap on Tater. Yes, he was not strong supporting the bill - maybe because of an idiot he has working for him that thinks everything passed by the legislature has a hidden worm in the bottle, and expresses that way too often -- but bet you can't find one example over the past three and a half sessions where the House gave a damn about what the Governor thought. In fact, maybe you ought to count up the times they tried to pass something that Tater had come out against just to be on the other side.
Nice try - but whatever the Gov had to say about this bill wasn't the basis for why Phillip killed it in his chamber. He was just copying his counterpart across the building when Dilbert didn't want to deal with the appointed Judges in 1020. Both are looking for an easy way out and not having dissent among "their" members.
@5:08 AM. I think you are correct. And at the same time, incorrect. You have produced the ultimate paradox.
With both statements factual, and the fact that the members (at least the male members, and the female members that want to claim the ownership) have proven that they have no balls, this meets the definition:
Paradox: a seemingly absurb or self-contridictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.
How many of you have forgotten that creating a regional authority for Jackson International Airport is still tied up in court??..from what, 5-6 years ago? I'm for both, but just saying...
