The Mississippi House of Representatives passed a bill yesterday that extends postpartum coverage for Medicaid mothers to twelve months. SB #2212 awaits Governor Tate Reeve's signature.
Speaker Phillip Gunn killed a similar bill last year. However, Governor Tate Reeves announced his support for the bill ten days ago. Division of Medicaid Executive Director Drew Snyder said the additional benefit will cost $7.1 million.
Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann praised the vote:
The Mississippi Senate, particularly Senator Kevin Blackwell and Senator Nicole Boyd, has championed legislation to extend postpartum care for mothers from 60 days to 12 months as most other states have done. This hard work has paid off. We appreciate the House passing Senate Bill 2212. When we have healthy mothers, we have healthy babies—a great example of post-Dobbs, pro-life policy.
How they voted

What heroes we have in the state house! Sitting on a nearly $4B pile of money, yet they still have to hold their nose and have their arms twisted to make the logical decision to do this. Yet they don’t fully extend coverage enacted by THAT former president even when economists have proven that it would be a boon and not a detriment to MS coffers.
The current pudgy Gov needs to be voted out on his ass and he can go kiss his master Trump’s ring on his own dime.
It's just $ for those who have none.
Is Jill Ford the 53rd or 74th?
More money for women who don't plan families but have babies as the result of having sex with someone they're not married to.
8:17 AM, I’m with you on fully extending Medicaid coverage. Taking the $$$ from the blue states that complain when we take it, then complain when we don’t, probably makes good economic sense.
And we can’t un-ring the LBJ bell that created this can’t take care of themselves dependency disaster.
But, should you not at least admit, that (just like with PERS) you lefties would love for Repubs to commit political suicide with its voters, right? Then you Dems get control of the state, right?
9:19 thinks all sex is consensual, that there’s no such thing as unplanned babies between married couples, and that the earth is flat.
I miss the days when adults took responsibility for their own actions.
I look forward to the Government subsidy to pay for my Diet Coke addiction.
Or a Ticketmaster Grant so I can afford more concerts.
Show us on the doll where the pudgy Gov touched you.
Since y'all don't support them having abortions, the least y'all pro-forced birthers can do is provide guaranteed postpartum care for the mothers for a short period of time.
10:01 AM,
You're leaving out a few steps of the whole "where babies come from" equation. When did "Y'all pro-forced birthers" cause any Medicaid recipients to have a baby in the first place?
10:01, So, because I don't permit someone to commit murder, I should be forced to care for the would-be murderer for some period of time? I know everyone sort of nods in agreement, but that makes no sense at all.
I’d like to see a program that provides birth control for low income women who want it. It wouldn’t be that expensive to start and would pay for itself in no time.
Where are the dads in this equation?
Jill Ford (73rd). Jill needs to explain this no vote.
@10:55 - they are poor too. Healthcare costs have inflated beyond the reach of average blue collar workers. I’m not sure how anyone could afford to pay for delivering a baby or a basic surgery without health insurance.
So, with the overturning of Roe, birthers suddenly require 12 months of 'followup' as opposed to 2? How did that happen?
Also, I never did know who paid for post-abortion follow-up visits and for how long. Can someone answer that?
Since the party of "personal freedom" and "limited government" seems to throw those principles out of the window by using the power of government to strip away reproductive choices in the name of "sanctity of life", that same party has a responsibility and moral obligation to protect the life of the child after it's born, including using said government to pay for its healthcare until it is independent and can care for itself, as well as improving postnatal health of the mother. Its the right thing to do.
@12:43, Bernie, is that you?
Great...lets reward poor moms for the one thing they shouldn't be doing, which is having more kids.
@10:55 In prison.
Oh geez...it is stunning what apparently has not been and is not being taught in Mississippi, even the college level about basic human biology, government, or history or economics.
I was educated in the South and biology, civics, and sex education was taught...the later not in great detail on sex education and in separate classes for girls and boys, but learned enough not to believe in myths.
One thing "unsuccessful" and " dependent" people you love to hate have in common is ignorance. And, the second is the lack of resources or mental capacity some of you assume everyone has and so you take those for granted.
And, some of you have either serious memory loss.
That, or you lived with parents or accepted support from them in "gifts" or "money" or "help in a pinch" or you wouldn't be so clueless.
Where did you get the clothes for your first interview for a job? Did you have running water at your house to bath first or someone to loan you clothes or transportation to a second hand clothing place? Bus run near your house? have to pay someone to take you?
Did you cut your own hair before you went? You had a to help that your parents attended help you?
Try to think past your own limited experiences or get out of your narcissism long enough to know you didn't " succeed" without help once out of the womb!
12:40 pm March 8th.
It's 6 months minimum postpartum care. But, 12 months is better. Indeed, it'd be even safer to get a child to 18 months so more physical anomalies that could exist become easier to recognize.
By the way, you do know that eyesight problems or partial deafness may not show up for years, right?
Or to you think a baby is fully developed at birth?
And, I haven't even touched on complications women can experience after childbirth. But, my guess is you don't care as mothers are expendable and replaceable to you.
I'm rolling my eyes because I know women from well to do families whose husbands abandoned their children for "trophies" and left them literally destitute. And, I also know some from my high school whose " baby's daddy" or his family never contributed a dime.
It's not like there's not a legal process to get child support that has lots of ways to evade it.
You don't think there are guys who get paid in cash to avoid child support or put everything in their name or their companies name to avoid support?
I know two very wealthy men who removed all the furniture ...including the wife's inherited items, cut off utilities and moved into the company condo with his "new honey" . The wife and children literally were living on charity. You know divorce attorneys aren't free. The wives ran out of money. And, while some lawyers will work hard and not all divorce attorneys will stick with the client who can't pay or try even to reach a less that fair settlement on their client's behalf.
Some of y'all commenting must be in Parchman, Whitfield or have no close friends who trust you enough to confide in you.
Where does it end, 8:48? That's right, in your opinion it should NEVER end. LBJ guaranteed it. Cradle to grave for anybody who doesn't want to prepare themselves to assimilate into normal society (which includes working for a living).
We have allowed a subculture of dependency to develop and as long as we tolerate and condone it, we encourage it to continue - forever.
And with our policy of open-borders, we are rapidly developing a second and parallel subculture.
Jill Ford was elected by the women of Madison County. If those women are not all attending tennis lessons and Junior League events, I'd like to hear their opinion of her vote on this issue.
Mrs. Ford has always claimed her motives and decisions are God-Driven. Given that, how does she rationalize her vote?
8:32 You are really using some extreme examples there. Most rational people want to offer assistance but they are tired of assistance become a multi-generational lifestyle.
Tell me more about these impoverished people who cannot afford haircuts? Why is it that they cannot get a job in the fast food industry (they can go to that interview in donated clothes and no haircut) and use the proceeds to then get a haircut and a suit and a higher paying job?
The truth is, you and the youth today have forgotten that many of us grew up with parents that provided the bare minimum while they also struggled...and yet we somehow managed. Your expectations of immediate wealth and high paying jobs is the problem. People who endure struggles, and use existing governmental assistance programs to better themselves and future generations are the admirable.
More commonly seen today are people who think they are being abused by the government when they are unable to purchase a new iPhone and designer shoes.
8:32 am,
It's hard to tell , but I think you are saying the government should provide everything a person needs from birth to death. THis is a totally different situation , with totally different outcomes from a person whose family teaches them how to provide for themselves and then lets them do it on their own. Something about teaching a man to fish versus just giving them the fish for free. ANyone who has been handed everything with no work ends up despising the ones who "helped" them and does not respect them at all . THey're a slave with a bad attitude.
12:40 I can answer that, no one pays for post abortion F/U bc there rarely is any complications with medical abortions which is the most common type. In fact it is 10 times safer than pregnancy. That's why it should be a legal option for women especially in MS having the highest infant and maternal mortalitly rates, Plus less women would be dependant on medicaid!!! The irony is those that voted against abortion still complain about medicaid "extension" and expansion to protect uninsured new moms health. There's a reason MS is always in the bottom and it will definitely stay there.
