The victim in the Richland Walmart hostage-taking Wednesday provided a public update on her Facebook page:
I thank everyone for their concern but I've received more messages than I can possibly ever respond to individually. This post will have to suffice.Yes, I was at work today. Yes, I was the hostage. No, I'm not okay but I will be. Physically, I am fine. Mentally, I'm having to process the fact that I could have died today and that this young lady actually DID die today while holding onto ME for dear life. That's all I've got to say until I am able to give my official statement to RPD.
This picture she posted says it all. No additional words are necessary.
Law enforcement sources said the hostage-taker entered the Walmart and almost immediately took the woman hostage. One video shows the police telling her to put the gun down but she refused to do so. Armed with only pistols and AR-15's, the police only had a head shot. With the victim's life at stake, an officer retrieved his deer rifle that was just zeroed in (and is assumed to have a scope). He took the shot but the same sources say he was pretty shaken by the incident.
The hostage-taker was obviously on drugs or suffering a mental problem but once she held a gun to the victim's head, she narrowed the choices available to the police.
Prayers for everyone concerned, including the deceased and her family.

My hope is the media reports this properly. I'm not interested in learning how the hostage taker is somehow the victim.
Could have ended really really badly for the hostage. She and the policeman who took the shot are the victims.

May God bless and comfort this lady. May she recover from the trauma inflicted on her.

Just a note to kingfish, an AR-15 is very accurate (most equiped with optics such as scopes or red dots), as accurate as 99% of hunting rifles.
It's so easy for a mentally unstable person to get a gun. We can only hope they only harm themselves, not innocent people. We were lucky this time.
She will likely be suffering from PTSD. Hopefully Walmart will rise to the occasion and provide her with the appropriate care.
@3:31 maybe the officer just trusted his own rifle a little more and was more comfortable using it.
Lucky for the hostage that the perp did not reflexively pull the trigger when she was shot.
Waiting for two or three clowns to tell me what they think they know about the reflex action of pulling a trigger at the moment they are 'head shot'.
Interesting on the sniper weapon of choice. When precision was needed, he got his actual rifle instead of using the ubiquitous carbine.
I suspect the rifle was scoped while they would have had to use the factory iron sights on the AR's.
Familiarity of the weapon may have been one of the reasons the personal rifle was used, along with what Kingfish said.
"I suspect the rifle was scoped while they would have had to use the factory iron sights on the AR's."
I'd bet my bottom dollar the ARs in possession of RPD are equipped with some type of optic other than the factory iron sights and the officers are well-trained in the use of the optics.
Eh, here is my two cents on the use of the hunting rifle.
He just zeroed the rifle in. He was using the same bullets he used to zero it. He knew where that rifle would put that bullet within no more than an inch.
He had one chance to put a shot exactly where it needed to be. And he knew his hunting rifle was up to the task.
No doubt RPD has optics on their ARs, but given the circumstances could the officer totally trust the AR that's been bouncing around in his cruiser and was zeroed with who knows what batch of ammo and when?
He trusted his personal rifle to put the shot exactly where it needed to go. Just glad he had the time and frame of mind to think to get it out of his car.
Could he have made the shot with his pistol or AR? Possibly. But he knew his rifle would do it with highest chance of success.
538pm....did you see the video. se was waving the gun all around. She made it easy for him to have a "safe" shot without the risk of reflexes coming into play. A smart hostage taker duct tapes the gun to the neck of the hostage and to their own hand. That renders snipers useless.
Alive BUT recovering? Sorry to disappoint you.
