Rankin County deputies arrested a former MHP trooper for witness tampering. Violating a no-contact order, Todd Cox tried several times to get his wife to drop aggravated domestic violence charges she filed against him in May.

The case begins on May 22, 2021 when deputies filed an incident report. The report states deputies were dispatched to the Brandon home for possible domestic violence between the Coxes. A neighbor said he saw "Todd Cox physically assault his wife," push her into a garage door, push her to the ground, and struck her in the face. "Katie" Cox managed to drive away, yelling at the neighbors to "call the cops." The report ends with the statement "This is an ongoing occurrence between Todd and Katie where he physically assaults her."
A year passed before Cox was finally arrested. A May 1, 2022 police report states:
Upon arrival, I spoke with Katie Cox who advised her husband Richard Todd Cox punched her in the stomach while outside at the front door causing her to fall over the bushes. Once they got into the master bedroom Mr. Cox hit Mrs. Cox in the head, kicked her and choked her until she almost passed out. Mrs. Cox had a bruise on the right leg, redness on her neck and had bleed from the nose. The bed cover had blood in several spots on it. Mr. Cox was already gone upon arrival. Mr. Cox is driving a Silver 2020 Chevrolet Silverado bearing MS tag xxxxxx. Mr. Cox does a key to Mrs. Cox's vehicle. Mrs. Cox was able to provide a voluntary written statement. Reservoir Fire Department and Pafford was requested. Mrs. Cox went with Pafford Ambulance Services to St. Dominic's Hospital for treatment. Investigator B. Smith was notified of the situation. Photos of the injuries were taken and sent to Investigator B. Smith.
Deputies arrested Cox and charged him with aggravated domestic violence. A Rankin County grand jury indicted Cox on August 3 for the offense. However, Cox could not stay out of trouble as he was soon arrested yet again.
Cox allegedly and hurriedly sped down Castlewoods Boulevard, flying through the stop sign at Meadowview Ridge in front of a deputy on June 2. The deputy gave chase but Cox sped up, ignoring more stop signs as he "swerved in and out of traffic." The chase continued on Lakeland Drive but ended at the Highway 471 exit when the defendant finally pulled over. He got out of the vehicle with his hands on top of his head and was compliant. The police report states Cox reeked of alcohol. Deputies obtained a search warrant and transported Cox to the hospital where a blood sample was drawn.
The poor man's version of a Smokey & The Bandit chase ended in Cox's arrest for felony fleeing, disregard for traffic device, reckless driving, and DUI. The Rankin County grand jury indicted him for felony evasion on August 3. The total amount of the bonds for Cox were $115,000. The various misdemeanor bonds were an additional $4,500. The bond conditions included a no-contact order with his wife (with an exception for marriage counseling) and the wearing of a GPS monitor.
Trouble somehow managed to find Cox yet again. Assistant District Attorney Greg Miles filed a motion to revoke Cox's bond on October 26 after he Cox allegedly contacted the victim and tried to get her to withhold her testimony in the domestic violence case.
Deputies arrested Cox yesterday and charged him with tampering with a witness. The motion also states Cox went into the victim's vehicle while she was absent from the vehicle recently. The victim's October 25 statement for the witness tampering charges alleges:
Cox kept on and on ask/telling me to go to the DA and try to get them to drop charges. He wanted me to say that nothing happened and I take back my original statement the night he was arrested for the domestic. Todd said if I did so he would settle w/me on our divorce and not tell anyone we had been in contact. So after feeling like I had no other choice, I emailed Leslie, say I did not want to have anything else with this case and I did not want him to go to jail.
A May 28, 2022 police report states:
Katie advised that Todd came to the house and picked her up and they both went out to dinner. She advised that when they got home, Todd wanted to stay overnight and she told him that he needed to go back to his parents house. When she said that, she said that Todd made a gesture of slitting her throat. Todd eventually left and a deputy found him parked at a parking lot on Northshore and Spillway rd.
Deputy Valino contacted Judge Morrow who signed the no contact order and advised him of the incident. Mr. Cox was released and he was advised not come back.
However, the report also states Katie Cox "declined" prosecution.

Pretty common theme of police officers committing domestic violence. The power trips seem to go to their head. Once you get used to zero accountability, it’s tough to reign it back in.

@1:50 PM, I'm from Rankin County, and I can assure you that my two teenage sons are nothing like this Cox dude. As a matter of fact, they are both gentlemen and very respectful of women. Making generalized comments like that about a whole county of people is pretty short-sighted on your part.
This guy can't stay out of trouble. He was kicked out of the Highway Patrol over a similar incident in 2018, but reinstated (with back pay and benefits) by the Mississippi Employee Appeals Board in 2019. Now he's got his ass fired again, and is in some real trouble.

My wife and I were caught in this chase. Big man sped past us in his pickup. Rankin SO and Flowood PD where in hot pursuit. They semi-blocked him at the Hwy 25 bridge that goes over Hwy 471 and forced him onto the ramp. He pulled over at the off-ramp and the LEOs swarmed his vehicle with guns drawn. I love on 471 and panicked and took the exit just as he exited the vehicle with his hands up. Thank god they didn’t exchange gunfire.
Some of the reason that there are more domestic assault charges in Rankin County is law enforcement encourages it. I was charged with domestic violence in Rankin County. I never touched my wife. She was mad at me and called the sheriffs office. They encouraged her to file domestic charges against me. When I went to court she was there to testify that I didn't touch her. For a while I thought the judge was not going to let her testify after she said I never touched her, that she was just mad at me.

I know it is going to be a bad day when I know I am going to have to drive into or through Rankin county. Just about the only time I do that is to visit the airport. The angst feeling generally start when crossing the Pearl river on Lakeland dr. And seeing the cops ready to pounce on some victims. Don’t tell me it’s about speeding, because the traffic problems prevent this.
I am pro-cop and support law enforcement.
However, MHP has a PR/identity issue. They all have little man syndrome and strut around like they are Mick Jagger. In the gym (the same one I used to see Marie’s) I see them and I tend to think MHP needs to steroid test. Some things don’t meet the eye-test.
Add to the the dangers driving I see them doing on the interstates and it’s just not a good look.

This is the opening stage of a case. The prosecution and arrests are presented. If there is another side, it will be presented in court. It will be reported here when it is. There is a bond hearing next week on the witness tampering. I suspect some of the comments made that were not approved will reappear in court next week on the record. Cox has a very good attorney in Derek Hall so I'm pretty sure if the comments are true, he will make similar statements in court and if he does, it will be reported here. I've covered enough DV cases to know there is often, not always, but often, another side.

Her dad is a retired state trooper(fact) her grandfather is retired asst commissioner of DPS and ran the training academy. (Fact) so he won’t get a fair trial in this but I assure you he has videos of every time they met after the no contact orders were in place , text from her begging to meet .., for sex .. she stayed every September night with him .. so she cries wolf now but she wasn’t then … don’t add up

Regardless of how “crazy” a woman may be, no “real man” would hit, beat or strike her.
For anyone to think it’s justified, the are either abused by their husband and believe it’s ok due to years of manipulation (Stockholm/battered wife) syndrome or they are a husband who currently abuses his wife.
The fact is this guy beat his wife on multiple occasions and even beat his first wife. You can’t change a narcissistic egotistical person. Those of us that have known TC for 20+ years and are true to ourselves have seen this coming for quit some time. Others just don’t have the courage to admit it.

I noticed you wrote wives as in multiple, sounds like you need to make better choices in women. Regardless, a man should never beat, strike, hit and as in this case, choke to almost unconsciousness a woman. A “man” would walk away in order to avoid further confrontation and not jeopardize himself with consequences for stupid actions. I doubt this young lady had much of a chance against a musclebound, roided-up meathead. Not to mention that he was highly trained when he worked with MHP SWAT.

MHP or police departments are not going to start testing for steroids. They would lose half their workforce. We look to these people to keep us safe and alot of them are the criminals and don't expect protection if you're needing it from another cop. So sad.
