There will not be a 2022 edition of the Jackson Black Rodeo. Real Cowboy Association President Jarriet Edwards announced on Facebook:
Hello Cowboys, Cowgirls, and Fans.Unfortunately I have to announce that the 19th Annual Jackson Black Rodeo is canceled.Reasons are due to previous incidents on the Fairgrounds that will restrict the event from being what it has been.I stand for the safety of All RCA Fans, Cowboys, and Cowgirls.(comment) However Tailgating was going to be eliminated, which would have been a major damper to the fans and people that come to do that every year..
Update (5:00 PM): An MDAC spokeswoman said in an email:
We have confirmed the promoters cancelled the event. There was no issue by the Fairgrounds in regards to tailgating or on-site camping by rodeo participants. Those are common elements to events on the Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds did seek to limit tailgating and on-site camping by nonparticipants who the promoter said were not part of his event. Further, the promoter disagreed with the security cost and believed fewer officers would be sufficient. The event was cancelled while contract negotiations were ongoing.

Racists won’t let the black cowboys tailgate but the Dixie National gets to parade all through downtown.
If you've lost the Jackson Black Real Cowboy Association, you've lost Jackson.
This is sad in so many ways for the whole metro area. Will the voters in Jackson ever wake up ?
Although this is simply one more in a list of people, events, things that have been or are being cancelled in the Bold New City. Most of you don't even know that the children's rodeo (youth or whatever it is called) moved from this location to Hattiesburg ten or twelve years ago for the same reasons.
Yet I've always wondered why there needed to be or was allowed to be a BLACK rodeo, as if blacks were restricted in opportunities without one. Some black mayors even rode horses in the opening ceremony down High Street. What if there were a WHITE rodeo or a MEN-ONLY rodeo?
The decline of civilized society in our once beautiful capital city cannot be denied and will only get worse. But, of course it's more important for elected leadership to fly off and attend a climate change seminar or attend meetings on reparations or how to micro-manage a police department.
I wouldn't have thought this would have attracted the young kids looking for trouble like some of the other venues.
Wonder what's going to happen with the state fair?
Gangs have Jackson in a death grip.
Tailgating = an excuse to get stupid drunk in the parking lot, followed by impaired driving after the sporting event.
11:02 If you are not a teen-ager or living on another planet you would realize that culture and popular "history" throughout the 20th century regarding Cowboys deliberately and historically omitted black men from their actual roles in livestock culture. Most black people were only presented with images of black men as urban street dwellers who wouldn't know a cow from a horse. The Black Rodeo was a real live exhibition designed to give black people a solid chance to connect with a part of black history and culture that Hollywood and popular mythology denied for most of the last century. Actual history (not Hollywood) will reveal that young black men played a very significant role in that part of American history involving cattle drives and the emergence of what is now Cowboy culture. I hope this helps you understand why a Black Rodeo.
Yes 10:37, because the participants and fans will not be packing heat like is so prevalent now in "some" circles of people. Grow up and act right.
Thats sad. When predominately black organizations start cancelling crime is not considered racist its pure evil. Time for all the community to come forward TOGETHER . How long will it take for All Hat Gipson to call another press conference—4-3-2-1.
It's the perception of cancelations.
10:37 The way I read the announcement the organization made the decision to cancel the event, not the fairgrounds management.
This is truly unfortunate. However, it will probably save several lives.
Gang bangers shoot up anything that looks like a good time in Jackson. They are completely out of control.
It's not worth it when innocent lives are at stake. The Real Cowboy Association made the right call. I hope they can find a safer place to host their event.
I'm not sure which racists in the city administration prohibit black cowboys from riding through town.
12:16 is simply one of those people who chooses to be a victim and will grasp at anything out there he thinks will afford him that opportunity. As with slavery, neither he nor anybody he knows or anybody THEY knew has ever know a black cowboy who was denied opportunity. He's never heard of any black person who suffered discrimination regarding any rodeo event. He enjoys advocating separatism, perceived victimhood and the opportunities black people have enjoyed for the past 75 years.
This is the same intentional separation of the races that insist on black tailgates at black (HBCU) sporting events, annual black-alumni-weekends at Mississippi State and a hundred other black-only events that celebrate victimhood as if it still exists.
It's actually fun to be a victim, wallow in the misery they claim to know something about (but don't) and teach their children to hate for the next three hundred years.
No, I'm not a teenager or living on another planet. I'm probably older than your grandfather and might even live next door to him.
1:54 - Fairgrounds management has nothing to say about parading through downtown Jackson. What, please, are you even talking about?
10:37 is too "woke" to be smart enough to comprehend announcement.....
As someone who has no valid argument, all his hurt butt can do is try to use the "R" word and is actually unable to do that in a proper manner.
Would love to be in his favorite Fondren waterhole watching his crocodile tears fall into his Shirley Temple drink as he cries about the abuse of jackson (and no it doesn't deserve a Capitol letter)
3:06 I'm 72 years old, lived 8 years in Texas, 12 in Louisiana and the rest in Mississippi and you're damn right I have seen discrimination and segregation with my own eyes and felt it with my own butt. I did not bring this shit up in my post but you seem obsessed with it. I only pointed out to someone who seemed not to know that the role of black people in Cowboy culture has been dismissed by media for years and that the Black Rodeo was started to remind people that despite the other images black folks were, and are, real life cowboys. Nobody said a damn thing about victimhood or separatism except you. You don't know me and you don't know a damn thing about my politics or what I have experienced. Fifty years ago when my father and other black farmers were getting kicked in the ass by real federal government discrimination, where were you? I don't know and I'm not arrogant enough to presume to know. But somehow you know me. Pound sand.
I’m failing to understand why what happened in the 1960s means we need to have a segregated event in 2022? Wasn’t that the whole point? Please keep me posted on the White blues music festival
If you wondered what Andy Gipson's "war on crime" will look like, this is it. Adding more officers, charging it to customers, and driving them away from using the Fairgrounds.
Here is how you FIX the issue of security at the Black Rodeo. Let everyone dressed in Western style gear, Stetsons and boots, and specifically those who are not currently breaking a steer or mustang, open carry a holstered weapon. No exceptions made for saggers. Problem solved.
In the wild, wild west, between 1860 and 1890, 1 in 4 actual cowboys was black.

@5:52
Welcome to 2022
Some crowds are more dangerous than others.
Don’t be surprised if the security requirements are more relaxed for the model railroad convention and comicon/anime convention crowd, than the security requirements for the gun show and rap concerts.
5:52, I prefer Andy Gibson’s method to the mayor’s do nothing method. At least Gipson is making an effort.
@5:52
Security at Fairgrounds and parking could improve dramatically if/when Naval Armory is renovated as Capitol Police Command Post.
Presumably, Lil Choke has no sticky fingers in the project.
Let's judge the State effort on its outcome.
Would Deppity Pheel be proud of Andy 'Sheriff' Gipson and his big hat?
5:07 PM -
I'm Lily White and have been racially discriminated against by blacks getting promoted because of the color of their skin. Since I not a protected class I sucked it up and became more successful in other areas.
You said, "Fifty years ago when my father and other black farmers were getting kicked in the ass by real federal government discrimination, where were you?" This is whining, & victim mentality. Right. Right.
I was Fighting in Vietnam 50 years ago & it gave me great pride to serve my country!
I proud I'm not a protected class.
1216. Your explanation made absolutely no sense. It literally hurt my brain reading it. Whatever happened in 1960 has nothing to do with having a segregated event in 2022 in an 80% black city. Wasn’t desegregation the whole point? Please keep me posted on the White blues music festival.
While not exactly a cowboy, one of the most prolific lawmen and deputy US Marshalls of the later 19th century was an former slave named Bass Reeves.

I bet there will be gihugeous crowds at the Mississippi State Fair in October. Get your pronto pups and roasted corn.
It took three minutes from the the time Mr. Fish posted until the race card was played. That’s all anyone needs to know about why Republicans and Democrats and white and black people can’t get along.
Lots of experts on here about black cowboys.
Mexican vaqueros and charros existed for hundreds of years before American cowboys existed. The origin of American cowboys is Mexican. I'd love to attend a Mexican cowboy event. Their expert horsemanship and skills with lassos are legendary.
7:14, that would be "Barney" Gipson. No amount of cowboy hat can hide his vague grin and crossed eyes.
Based on FB posts, the Jackson Black Rodeo was one of the favorite rodeos of the people who attend those. Sad to see it canceled but what group wants to have an event in the murder capitol of the United States? At least cities like Chicago and New Orleans have something to offer other than murder.
Higher costs because of extra security is going to be normal after the Mudbug event. You can blame this on the criminal culture in Jackson that no one wants to admit exists. If the fairgrounds agreed to fewer officers and lower security costs, they would be the first blamed if a shootout happened at the event.
Pretty sure the mayor already blamed the Ag Commissioner for the shootings. He refuses to acknowledge that it is hardly the Ag Commissioner's fault that the fairgrounds is located in the murder capitol of the US.
"I'm Lily White and have been racially discriminated against by blacks getting promoted because of the color of their skin. Since I not a protected class I sucked it up and became more successful in other areas."
How fortunate for you that you found other avenues for success. Being in a privileged class in this country I'm sure brings you much relief, whether you publicly acknowledge it or not.
5:07 - I'm older than you are and can't pound sand like I once could. My charge to you was that YOU have NEVER known a black person who suffered any form of rodeo or cowboy discrimination, yet you launch off on a diatribe about your personal experience with discrimination.
The point here is that there is not a need for a separate event featuring black people on horseback as they ARE and in your lifetime HAVE BEEN afforded equal opportunity.
Go pound cow patties.
8:08 p.m. May 21 Actually you seem to be the only person here whining and demonstrating a victim mentality. You poor white man you have been so discriminated against and victimized by those privileged blacks. God help you.
Won't be long before Lumumba has to defend the safety of large events in Jackson ... because there won't be any.
I was one of the First to contact the original contractor Mr Edwards to bring the rodeo to JACKSON. I competed in it in other states before it ever came here and wanted to see it here... Yeah it brings in money but its gotten more dangerous over the years. Ive competed every year and Ive pulled double duty working it as a LE OFFICER.. Problems... Fourwheelers and other ATV'S driving around at stupid speeds and not caring who they hit, runover or anything.. My horses cost a lot and I spend a lot of time training them and to have stupid people riding ATV'S around in an unsafe mannor is crazy! Then some even turn theyre underage kids loose on them . That situation is not safe at all. Then you got all of Jacksons little young thugs walking around with their guns hanging out there pants waiting to start something and people look at them like its not a problem. Then the tailgaters wont clean up after themselves... Just throw stuff on the ground when garbage cans are right in front of them.. The Fairgrounds should have been charging for everyone thats not competing, or didn't have tickets, a gate entry fee to help provide more security and to help offset clean up afterwards. Yeah its sad to loose the rodeo for the REAL rodeo fans and the ones that compete..
Jackson has nothing do with security on the fairground. State own the property .
