Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
A 25-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him of the brutal murder of James Hankins.
After a weeklong trial, Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces a guilty verdict in the trial of Joshua Dukes, before the Hinds County Circuit Court. Dukes was charged with capital murder for shooting James Hankins in the back of the head, causing his death amid a robbery.
Dukes will spend the remainder of his life in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. District Attorney Jody Owens says, “Gun violence is a blight on our community and we finally got justice for such a horrific crime, but most of all for the family and victims.”

Finally Justice for Mr. Hankins!! I wonder when will the other three counts of Capital Murder be tried.
Jody is primo. He comes from good stock. He and Shad White are both ambitious, with the same determination to go higher politically. I know both of them, and look forward to following their careers.
First step: Don't get shot.
Praise Jesus! This will save lives.
Why did it take 5 years to get a conviction? Is this because RSS was District Attorney?
"Praise Jesus! This will save lives." Praise Jesus is self explanatory, but how will this save lives? If you mean Dukes will be out of circulation in society, I agree wholeheartedly. If you mean others will see this as a deterrent, not quite sure I agree with that thought process. Either way, one bad hombre is off of the streets. Now we just need to avoid his confederates.
Y'all be safe and aware of your surroundings.
Once again, the lack of a death sentence forces taxpayers to fund this POS for the rest of his worthless life.
How did this case become almost 7 years old? Almost a decade to bring a capital murder to trial? I guarantee there was a family pushing and refused to go away. Hinds county is irreparable when it takes almost a decade for a case to go to trial. Embarrassing and shameful. Gascon isn’t that bad.
Getting 3 squares a day...cable and all the weed he can smoke. Oh yeah, and a cell phone.
this guy robbed and murdered an old man while the old man was merely working in his yard.
he was indicted for capitol murder
that made the case eligible for a death penalty
why didn't the D A go after a death penalty?
somebody please explain that to me.
Thank you for conviction!
Animals that prey on the population know that the worst that will happen to them is their shelter, food and drugs will all be under one roof. It seems that if it’s an open and shut case those who murder should be promptly executed.
