Leftenent Governor Delbert Hosemann issued the following statement.
Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann is calling for a six-month suspension of the state’s 18.4-cent gas tax to combat record-level inflation.
“The No. 1 concern citizens are discussing around their kitchen tables is the increased cost of goods and services,” Hosemann said. “Reducing what Mississippians are paying at the pump is direct and immediate relief to families.”
Suspending the gas tax for six months would cost about $215 million. Entities which receive a diversion currently from the gas tax would be made whole through the Capital Expense Fund (additional revenue) under Hosemann’s proposal.
Earlier this Session, the Senate passed legislation which would provide a boost of $300 million to the state’s Emergency Road and Bridge Repair (ERBR) Program. Hosemann’s gas tax suspension proposal would not impact this additional injection of one-time funds for critical infrastructure projects.
Enacted in 2018, the ERBR Program is administered by the Mississippi Department of Transportation upon the advice of an advisory board made up of industry and local government leaders. The program was initially funded with $250 million in bonds. The Legislature appropriated an additional $89 million during the 2021 Legislative Session.

Political pandering
A better way to spend the money would be to offer deep discounts to Mississippians to buy EVs like the EV Blazer, the EV Bronco, and yes, Tesla Motors. It’s time to push forward into the 21st century and shed our dependence on blood 🩸oil, while saving the planet from the ravages of Climate Change.
I have no sympathy for anyone that didn't learn from Katrina gas lines. Keep the tax.
Saving pennies. But at least the Lt. Gov is trying.
They could just give me $60k so I could buy a (cheaper) Tesla. Or you could just tell the morons in Washington to start drilling again!
@5:23 PM - Wow! AOC is on here. Who knew?
Hosemann is desperate since the Senate tax reduction plan is paltry and the Senate teacher pay raise bill offering suffered from e-dysfunction.
@5:23
Hahahahahaha You had me going there for a second but I know you've got to be kidding. Good one though .
The effort to eliminate the state income tax has gained a lot of momentum lately. Being a very moderate Republican, Delbert wants to keep the state income tax. This is his attempt to spend the money that is needed to make eliminating the income tax politically viable.
05:32 what a crock. Hopefully those with blinders on will realize there is no benefit to EVs. You're just transferring issues. I'd take ten fuel efficient petro cars over one EV. Notice that nothing has been broadcast about the ship load of EVs that went down off the coast of Portugal's coast. Another Chernobyl. How are you going to afford an EV when the batteries go, you're left with nothing to trade and the EV price's continue to spiral up. You my friend are waiting on a government program which has never and will never work for the benefit.
No need for a gas tax. Mississippi has excellent roads.
Makes good sense. Spend one-time money on a one-time cause…it’s gonna be spent on something. Benefit the folks that purchase gas. Smart…
Take away the ridiculous hybrid tax.
And all of a sudden, the bridge inspections has ceased. The state under Bryant and Trump were closing 10 per week. Then they magically stopped closing. Yeah, just eliminate the gas tax.
705, you are correct about Delbert wanting to keep the income tax, but the movement from the House to swap the income tax for an increase in the sales tax has not gained momentum - neither a little nor a lot.
There is support for elimination of the tax - but not for increasing other taxes. The two Houses are both close but neither one wins the cigar.
Take the tax elimination from the House bill and the sales tax reduction from the Senate bill. Then quit spending extra money just because it is there (the reason Delbert doesn't want to cut the taxes - will take away part of what he considers to be his piggy bank, and he wants to spend it on education; another story.
But this temporary gas tax elimination is nothing but a late session ploy - hell, even some Democrats in Congress are promoting the idea for the national gas tax.
What a great idea. We have the cheapest gas in the country, one of the last states not to raise gas taxes to keep up with infrastructure needs, under fund MDOT, roads are falling apart - why don’t we reduce infrastructure funding even more.
What a freakin idiot.

Nailed it !
@5:23
You want to buy those electric cars that run on coal? Geez… I thought liberals said coal was bad
Guess what the carbon footprint for electrical vehicles are larger. That’s right the electricity is produced from coal
Also where do you suggest everyone charge these cars? Whole Foods has a few chargers. Also why spend tax money to do this. Furthermore this is the problem with liberals!!! There would be no possible way to have everyone drive a electrical vehicle today
So get serious. It’s great in theory but not reality
More gimmicks from the Lt. Gov. Good Lord Delbert please get serious.
Ev, solar, wind are boondoggles
The price of oil is a global number. Do you really think US producers are going to sell for $35 a barrel when the world market price is $100 (or what ever it is today). Let me please add that I too think Biden isn’t all there but he doesn’t have a hell of a lot to do with the current price of oil.
Are there any federal leases for O & G that could come open in Mississippi, if the Biden admin comes to its senses?
10:04 Please tell me that you have never taken a class in economics.
Meanwhile the Mid-Day-Talking-Head on Supertalk decries the nonsense of global warming and elimination of fossil fuels while (out of the other side of his mouth) on a daily basis saying he is optimistic about electric vehicles in the future, just not at this rapid roll-out pace.
Supporting the coal industry and fracking while claiming moving to EV dependency is a good thing? How can you talk out of both sides of your mouth? To answer the question, tune in and listen to how it's done.
Tax is all about who actually bears the cost of it. For people on finite budgets, for example, a 2% reduction on tax (with a tax based on a percentage of price) coupled with a 3% increase in price is a big step back. It isn't that the reduction doesn't *ameliorate*, it is that it doesn't _offset_. In other words, the payer still suffers a increase albeit less substantial.
I'm disappointed in Delbert. I thought he was more of an adult that to float political "nothings" like this. On a 20 gallon fill up, the roughly "savings" would be almost $4. What a game changer in a person's budget.
@8:33
I charge my Tesla at home using the energy stored from 4000 sq ft of solar panels on my roof. Solar panels, battery storage, and charger were all installed by Tesla located on Airport Rd in Pearl. This isn’t hard stuff to figure out, but obviously I am much smarter than you. By my calculations, with the current price of gas, my setup will pay for itself in 3 years. Payoff will be much faster when gasoline is $6 a gallon as currently predicted.
@8:33 You really need to educate yourself on the topic so you don't sound like a complete dolt. First of all, the vast majority of electrical generation in this state comes from Natural Gas or Nuclear. Coal is around 5% of Entergy's entire portfolio. Second of all, EV owners charge at their homes. 99% of the time you're traveling well within the range of your vehicle and you have no need for the charger at Whole Foods or other.
Could we get some gas tax funds to repair Riverside Drive. Dear LAWD! I rode on better roads in TAji, Iraq after VBIDs.
@ March 14, 2022 at 10:04 PM -- Ever take an Economics course?
@10:04 PM - Indeed it is. Even Neil Cavuto on Fox News explained this a couple of days ago. The price of oil is set globally, not regionally.
Another Delbert gimmick in an attempt to be relevant.
Wasn't Delbert the one pushing to increase the gas tax just a few months back? Goes to show he has no ideological compass - only interested in getting more money for the government and protecting his own hide.
LOL 5:23. My tractor and truck only run on diesel. At least I will have food. Good luck in Belhaven.
Wasn't it John Arthur Eaves who stated while he was running for governor that he wanted to remove "the sales tax on tax on gasoline"?
I usually agree with Delbert, but in this case, we need to keep the gas tax as is. Plus, based on weekend traffic, it doesn't look like anyone is cutting back on their leisure driving.
10:04. Right! Does everyone here realize that under Trump our dependence on Russian oil rose? Russian imports rose 39 percent in four years. It’s how gas prices were so low (and the huge demand drop in 2020)
Oil companies buy the cheapest product. USA companies have no obligation to sell it to USA companies at a lower cost…so since global demand has soared and production has remained consistent, the price is driven up.
So unless we want government regulation on oil company profit (check their bottom lines right now..), get used to 6 a gallon gas.
@8:33 - you don’t seem to have a working knowledge of how any of this works. Electric vehicles use the same electricity that powers your house. You plug them into your power outlet at your house or maybe trailer in your case. It’s just like a phone, you plug it up when you get home and like magic you have a full charge when you wake up. And sure, we still have some outdated coal plants that have been subsidized into survival, but it’s not the primary source in developed countries. It’s also far more efficient to burn gas at large plants that generate electricity than in small internal combustion engines, hence why the carbon footprint is so much smaller on ev’s compared to ice vehicles. Electric vehicles are the future and making uneducated guesses at why they are bad isn’t going to save the oil and gas industries.
This is all simply arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Saudi Arabia just announced that they will accept the Yuan Renminbi directly as payment for oil. The US Dollar is no longer the petrodollar. Meaning it is no longer the de facto world reserve currency. It’s over. The sanctions have ruined the dollar. Expect hyperinflation any day now as people rush to acquire commodities to survive.
At-Home EV Charging Station Installation Costs
If your home already has a 240-volt circuit available, the basic installation will cost you between $250 and $400. However, if you choose to mount a station and run 50-amp dedicated wiring, it will cost you between $400 and $1,700.
On average, the cost to charge a Tesla per month in the US is around $49. Based on our Tesla charging price data, the high end of the EV charging spectrum is around $70 a month in Hawaii. While the low end of spectrum is around $31 a month in Washington state.
The cost of electricity isn’t the only factor in the price per month to charge your Tesla. How you drive and how far you drive will also factor into how much you’ll spend per month to charge your Tesla. Our friends at Teslab provided us with data into how driving style and mileage effects the monthly cost of Tesla ownership. Check them out: https://teslab.happyfuncorp.com/
Over at Teslanomics.co, we’ve created a Tesla charging cost calculator. This EV charging cost calculator can help you determine how driving style and millage may affect your estimated monthly cost. Choose your state, style and mileage and get your estimate cost as well as how it compares to the average. These costs are something you may want to consider in determining if an electric vehicle – or Tesla – is right for you.

EVs are great if you never go anywhere. EV range sucks exponentially more in cold climates.
The mid day talking head on super tall is a fish out of water. Just like Bomgar. Being a former CEO is difficult.
With so many experts on this site, I wonder why MS is 50th. Shit all you need to do is come to this anonymous posting blog and listen to these knuckle draggers and you will figure out how to run the state, make everyone happy, fix inflation, gas prices, taxation, government spending, economic malaise of our state, how to please your spouse in 3 minutes or less, cancer, and help Ole Miss win a National Championship. It's easy.
Carry on.
