Jackson closed the zoo yesterday but then a few hours later reopened it after some common sense for once prevailed at City Hall. The city issued this press release yesterday morning:
Due to a rise in COVID-19 Delta and Omicron cases within the City of Jackson, Mayor Lumumba has closed all non-essential city offices and facilities from 12/29/2021 to 01/06/2022. (Read the full proclamation HERE.)As a result, the Jackson Zoo and Livingston Park will be closed to the public during this time. Non-essential city employees will be working remotely, so any non-animal care related issues will be handled as usual, but please be patient with any delays. Our first $2 TUESDAY will therefore be postponed to January 11th. Tickets will become available online Monday, January 10th, along with tickets for the normal zoo hours of Thursday through Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm.We hope that our neighbors and community can stay at home if they can, although we realize that it is not always possible. We continue to highly encourage everyone to practice healthy habits, including social distancing, masking in public spaces, hand washing, and COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters, to help reduce the number of hospitalizations and and deaths from the pandemic.Be safe, be healthy, and we will welcome everyone back as soon as possible.
The Mayor is always yapping about how he follows the science (except for when he is partying without a mask in Atlanta and getting infected with Covid) yet closing the zoo does not follow the science. The only employee who interacts with the public is the ticket taker and she works behind a partition.
Visiting the zoo is an outdoor activity. What is outdoors? The sun. What does the sun do? Stimulate vitamin D production in your body. What does vitamin D do? Boost the immune system. Outdoor activities are pretty safe in the days of covid as one of the best defenses against the disease is .... air circulation.
Fortunately, science eventually prevailed because the city reopened the zoo a few hours later:
The City of Jackson has released updated hours of operation for the Jackson Zoo and Pete Brown Golf Facility. The new schedules follow Mayor Lumumba’s recent executive order closing down city offices due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Hours have been limited at the zoo and golf course to decrease exposure to the virus even though both facilities involve primarily outdoor activities. In addition to the change in schedule, some COVID-19 mandates have been put in place:
- Masks must be worn.
- Social distancing will be practiced.
- Carts and equipment will be sprayed with sanitizing equipment.
The new hours are listed below:
Jackson Zoo – Hours of Operation
Thursday, Dec. 30 – Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 31 – Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 1 - Closed
Sunday, Jan. 2 – Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 3 – Closed (Normal Close Day)
Tuesday, Jan. 4 - $2 Tuesday has been postponed due to weather temperatures. Weather permitting will resume normal hours Tuesday, (Jan. 11).
Wednesday, Jan. 5 - Closed (Normal Close Day)
Pete Brown Golf Facility – Hours of Operation
Wednesday, Dec. 29 – Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 30 – Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 31 – Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 1st – Closed
Sunday, Jan. 2 – Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 3 – Closed (Regular Maintenance Day)
Tuesday, Jan. 4 – Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 5 – Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Unfortunately, this edict still defies common sense. Limiting hours merely increases the density of those attending the golf course or the zoo. Suppose 100 people are going to attend the zoo on Sunday. Is it safer to cram them into a four hour shift or six hour shift? Oh well, this is Jackson where math is often ignored.

You can tell the Marxist when they opt to close revenue-generating operations on one of the few days everyone is off and can go visit or play golf.
Ole Miss doesn't play until that night and the CFP's are on the 31st, so yes people may want to get out Jan 1st while they are off.
It's "fuzzy math," invented long ago by liberals, socialists, progressives, and other similar vermin.
How many people attend the zoo? Weekly? Monthly?
Does it matter? You suggest the hypothetical of 'crowding' 100 visitors in the shortened hours. Question: When was the last time 100 people visited the Jackson zoo in a single day?
Does anyone actually go to this place? I will never ever venture to the Jackson zoo in this location. I would rather drive to Memphis, Hattiesburg or New Orleans than go through the shit hole that surrounds this zoo.
Haven’t you heard? Math and science are racist.
The mayor is just being a good foot soldier for the regime, like the governor closing the damn reservoir. These things seem stupid, but they're not. They're just part of the agenda.
I only venture into Jackson to go to G.V. Sonny Montgomery. I’d rather take my kids on a Jeep Safari, and get my money’s worth than go to the zoo in Jackson.
This idiom in chief follows Bloomberg and Dr. fauci!!! What a moron.
Close the zoo-permanently
and i’m sure that everyone who is posting plans on playing golf or going to the jackson zoo this weekend…
I think this was about Lumumba II giving his people a paid vacation until after New Year's. COVID was just an excuse.
Jackistan's zoo is great for ammo and mag sales, right? One must be strapped to drive to/from the zoo, right?
Be sure to check out all of the abandoned homes. Remember Detroit? Another leftist/progressive/Marxist city, right?
During the height of the dumbassedness, the apartment I lived it closed the pool
That’s full of chlorine, outside, under the sun
Some of you need to stop your worship of Alex Jones. Your conspiracy theories are showing.
What…. The Jackson Zoo was open???
Makes as much sense as One Term-Tater Tot closing the reservoir….
Yes, Kingfish, Jackson should have thought about fighting COVID with sunshine. What’s next, suggesting live, laugh, love for our next approach in fighting the virus?
And if temporarily shutting down the zoo for a couple of hours ruffles your feathers, just wait until you hear how at least half your reader base wants to close it permanently. Are you going to write an article for them too?
What does our plans to attend (or not) have to do with the factual stupidity of restricting hours of operation at an outdoor venue due to Covid, 11:00am?
Hattiesburg does have a fine zoo. Worth the drive.
Those animals deserve better. No way the help cares for their needs .
This is an economically brilliant scheme. Open it at times people don’t come and close it at times when people do come!!!!
This seems to be the pervasive plan for the bold new Capitol city!
It’s all rather sad. 40 years ago, the zoo was a great day out for the family. Now, I’m practically barricaded in my home. When I do venture out, it’s out of necessity. I go from point A to point B and back, in midday, constantly surveilling my immediate surroundings. I’m certainly not going into a kill zone by choice.
The blight in the city is unspeakable. It’s all so pathetic. Eudora Welty was a great library back in the day. I still go there once and awhile to check out the “new” nonfiction shelf (singular, as in ONE rack). Drove by there last week and the automatic doors were boarded up. There was a halfass not sheet of paper taped to a board with the “holiday hours.” Do that many people really not read anymore? That’s rhetorical. I know the answer.
The Zoo hasn’t seen 100 guests on a regular day in YEARS!!! Lol
Jackson zoo = Jackistan city limits.
Co.e on down and se the new Thug Exhibit and the exciting Get Hunted and Shot Safari. Then exit thru the I'd rather have covid gallery.
The zoo is still closed. It's also called City Hall.
How many people attend the zoo in a day? Can’t be many
This is typical 70 IQ behavior and another perfect example of why an Ivy League education means jack shit in 2022.
B-b-but Mayor Lumumba is a HARVARD GRADUATE?!
8:56am- NO, he is NOT a Harvard graduate.
Of course the zoo should be sold off or reduced to urban farming plots on a sharecropper basis but Boy Mayor needs a starting point for his inherited Lumumbatorian wet dream of "New Africa", which marxist, planetarily radical collectivism requires suitable fauna.
Afterall, in commie Venezuela one can find albatross and feral dog tacos hawked by street vendors. How can Jackson's Little Emperor deny us his marxist cuisine?
Who really cares? We have not had a decent zoo in many years.
Come on KF......
Common sense used in the same sentence with Jackson.
In your wildest dreams!!
The fact that Jackson actually still has a zoo, and that the idiots in city "government" fight over it all the time, is a source of great amusement to me . . .
