The Metrocenter Mall move one step closer to state ownership after Emily Sanders failed to pay the property taxes this year.
Hinds County tax records show the mall was placed on the tax sale block recently. The actual tax bill was $84,000. However, Sanders owes $99,000 when interest is included. There were no buyers at the tax sale so a tax certificate was awarded to the state of Mississippi. The state does not have actual ownership of the property although WLBT reported it did. Ms. Sanders has another two years to redeem the taxes before the state can take title to Metrocenter.
Kingfish note: Surprise, surprise, surprise. Anyone who looked at the history of this con woman should have expected this to happen. Unless someone purchases the property soon, expected to sit vacant for the next few years until estate can take actual ownership and then dispose of the property. To think we spent all that money moving the Department of Revenue to Clinton when if we had waited just a few years, we could've gotten this for free. Earlier post
There are currently two federal lawsuits against Miss Sanders for claims related to Metrocenter. Earlier Post
Let's not forget what more than a few Jacksonians said when the media tried to report her history. Dumbassery on display.

What would have been surprising is IF she would have paid the taxes and Metrocenter was revitalized. This. . .not paying the taxes. . .no shocker!
There's a charlatan born every minute.
If they would just open a Chick-Fil-A in the mall, it would bring in more foot traffic.
Bummer...I was looking forward to the ferris wheel and go kart track.
I know, let's have a gun show at Metro to defray the tax obligation. Who's with me?
There used to be a Chick-fil-A in the mall. But, they wisely moved down hwy 80 to Clinton.
I was so looking forward to living in the luxury apartments & riding the giant ferris wheel she planned as part of the mall's redevelopment.
@9:44
They have a gun show in the parking lot and surrounding area every night between 7 P and 7 A.
Its better than those at the trade mart, these have live product demos
Had such a good time in the new .....oh wait.
The mall should be torn down the location should become the new home of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
I would have enjoyed watching her fat ass on a Ferris wheel. Especially one built by Socrates Garrett as it fell to the ground.
this place needs bulldozer therapy
Anyone have any idea what if anything MS Sanders paid for the Merto mall? It never was clear what she paid if anything? Who exactly sold her the property? Who held the loan?
Aren’t tax sales supposed to be advertised? How are local media outlets just now finding out about the tax sale, if it was advertised before it took place? With that kind of scant publicity, there probably wouldn’t be any buyers even if the object of the sale weren’t some old, indoor mall.
Even though I’m pro Jackson and want to see things thrive there, I just don’t see MetroCenter coming back, given, among other things, that successfully revitalizing an old indoor shopping mall (in any town) is damn near impossible. Even if that weren’t the case, this sale was obviously not well advertised. No wonder there wasn’t a buyer.
If you were ever to build a new arena for the metro area that would be the site.
Let me get this straight: She paid $10,000,000.00 for the mall and then lets it go to a tax sale? Did she pay all cash or is there a lender? Somethings not adding up.
The last owner of the mall tried to give it away for years. She didn’t pay a dime for it.
Good charlatans are too wise to use their own money for scams. It's unlikely that she is out a nickel. Now her investors, well...
What a monumental waste. I remember my first visit there as a country kid from the Delta, circa 1980. I felt like I had been transported into the future. What happened? Is this just another case of a mall being put out of business by ghetto-dwellers overrunning it such that actual shoppers with money don't feel safe going there?
There's a whole industry built around tax sales. They are well advertised. Most buyers of tax liens don't want to own the property. They just want the guaranteed interest and fees when the lien is redeemed. The market decided that this $80,000 lien was not going to redeemed and the property was not worth owning at that price. If it was, there would of been bidders lined out the door. If anyone out there thinks it's a good deal, go buy the lien and bid on next years tax sale too. She's not every going to pay her taxes. You'll own a mall and all the liabilities going forward plus a nice tax bill every year. This lien does not include the four anchor buildings. You'll just own a parking lot and the core of the mall.
Seriously: Perfect location for a new regional prison (county or state). Why the hell does it have to be in Raymond?
Very shocking, given her squeaky clean track record!
It was known that she didn’t have the resources to take on a project like this to start with! How did it ever get this far?
I encourage everyone to read this JJ post from 10/9/2020 in which the head of a local group called Respect Our Black Dollars described how this convicted real estate fraudster tried to scam his group into joining her illegitimate enterprise.
http://kingfish1935.blogspot.com/2020/10/more-metrocenter-mudslinging.html?m=1
The group would have been left holding the bag when she defaulted on her loans if it had bought her crap.
You'd only put a jail there if you were serious about turning things around in Jackson. Let us know if you find someone.
11:19 Exactly. That's why ALL of Jackson is in the state it's in.
Wesley was ready to believe this scam artist but is convinced that Matt Allen and Megan West made their real life crime story up out of thin air.
Met her once. Knew she was a crook in less than 20 seconds.
She's didn't apply enough creative class claptrap to her story. Mixed use, by itself, won't get the job done. You've got to drop creative class into everything.
Based on a search on the parcel number, tax year 2020 is the first year that the taxes have not been paid. It takes 3 years of unpaid taxes for the owner to lose the property. FWIW, prior to 2020 the owner was listed as Jackson Commons for 5 years. Here is the link for inquiring minds.

As an ex employee of DOR while in Clinton I would not have wanted to drive to MetroCenter.
She never intended to pay the taxes. She would simply collect whatever she could from "investors" then suddenly have a financial collapse due to "no fault of her own" and fade away. She would resurface in some other state using a different name. Okey doke.
Same dupes who believed her are the same dupes who were convinced that Antard walks on water.
I still remember the “Marketing Manager” being interviewed in his dirty, oversized white tshirt and laugh
I hated the place decades ago because the "ring road" around it was a cracked-up roller coaster on a horrible road bed: millions to fix.
Metrocenter Mall is a metaphorical microcosm of Jackson.
Patiently waiting for all of those who called the ones having their doubts about her racist, to apologize.
Let Jackistan's so-called "homeless" live there and watch the games begin. (Send the coroner in once or twice a week to collect the bodies).
Every once in a while, "Next" is actually the only appropriate response.
9:44 If there is a gunshow at the Metro, there will be more guns in the parking lot than inside the venue!!!
I don't know what the solution is for this. We can't keep shutting down huge-ass malls and building new ones. The problem is just going to move to the new mall. Maybe these malls that are experiencing this 'overrunning' effect need to start charging admission fees: $10 per head to get in which will be credited toward any purchase made in the mall. Everyone under 21 accompanied by a parent or guardian after 6PM. The people likely causing the trouble are just there to hang out and aren't purchasing.
Check the tax roll and look at Hal and Mals. How do they get away with it?
The high maintenance "hallways" between stores and cheap construction of some malls are deal killers. Renaissance learned from Highland Village, both high quality designs.
Highland Village may have been a 'high quality design', but what good is that when the entire place is a virtual echo-chamber-morgue. It will some day occur to you that 'design' is not the problem.
11:03 - When was the last time you went to Highland Village? Probably never. You can't even find a parking spot on some days.
Now it will crumble. The state will hold it forever and let it deteriorate just like Apple Ridge. They try to sell all properties for gold and get dirt.
While I applaud MisterDeplorable for a legit attempt at a solution and not at all a bad one if people actually wanted to improve the caliber of the clientele.
Any attempt at an entrance fee would be labeled as racist and summarily shut down with national media descending upon Mississippi stereotypes with haste.
@11:03 You are so right. I'm forever driving around and around trying to get a parking space at Highland Village.
