Here We Go Again: Water Problems

Update (8:00 AM, 11/121)UPDATE: The City’s pressure improved overnight to 75 psi, and the storage tanks started to fill.  A majority of residents will see their pressure improved this morning, but residents in west and south Jackson will continue to struggle as the systems recovers.

We are still on boil water notice until samples are complete and has been approved to lift the precautionary notice.

Original post: The city of Jackson issued the following statement.

The City of Jackson is under a citywide boil water notice following complications at the City’s O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant and could lead to low to no water pressure in some areas of the City throughout the next few days.

Workers are currently working to the get the system back online after it is believed a bad batch of chemicals used to improve water quality was administered Saturday night. This forced the City to shut down the conventional side of the plant and empty the basins.

The City’s other treatment facility, J.H. Fewell, has been helping to maintain water pressure to stay above the boil water threshold. However, the City has not been able to provide the adequate pressure of about 90 psi and pressure at the plant was nearing a 65 psi threshold by Monday afternoon. Once it falls below that level, the City is required to issue a precautionary boil water notice.

City Engineer Dr. Charles Williams said low to no water pressure could affect businesses and schools throughout the next day or two, especially areas of South Jackson and those in higher elevations, as workers restore the system. He said the tanks are slowly being refilled. It will take two positive tests from the state Department of Health to lift the notice. That could happen as early as Thursday, he said.

They waited to announce this until the EPA schmuck left town. Bwa ha ha.

Why not post the great news from today? The Administrator from the EPA was here meeting with Mayor Lumumba, and he represented that Jackson would receive a significant amount of federal money from President Biden’s $1 trillion, bi-partisan infrastructure bill that just passed to go towards improving our antiquated water/sewer system. Hallelujah!

Damn

Nissan plant in Canton will need water from elsewhere for a few days.

A complete and total sh__hole

What a way to welcome the EPA to town.

"it is believed a bad batch of chemicals used to improve water quality was administered Saturday night"

Someone should be fired.

Well, gosh. I am sooooooo shocked that Jackson developed "water problems" about 24-36 hours before the EPA Chief visited to inspect the water plants. Golly, I hope he brought the EPA checkbook. Shocking.

used the wrong chemicals! Or at least that's what they are saying this time (remember, folks, they lied about it last time until the truth finally hit the fan)

But if this is the real reason, damn - I can't think of a worse answer. Unless, of course, they were trying to put on a show for Biden's EPA Environmental Justice tour

"Bad batch of chemicals" sounds dumb. If the chemicals had an expiration date that has passed, then they shouldn't be in the facility.

Is the city saying that tainted chemicals were received from a supplier? Doubtful, because the city would be more specific in its excuses to pass as much blame as possible.

This was most likely "incorrectly administered chemicals", or some other personnel screw up. Nothing more.

Recall the mayor. For real.

Is this what happens when you can't get certified water employees to move to Mississippi and work for $35,000?

Anonymous said...

is 9:38 serious? If so, Labumba will laugh all the way to the club.

Anonymous said...

We can't even get crime statistics. But, what if we could get data on the employees at these treatment plants, the people who are supposedly adding or otherwise working with chemicals, etc...Their educational levels, work background, certifications and performance reviews (as if)?

How many of these employees are simply riding around in white trucks looking at cell phones and popping bubble gum?

We trust the city, in this case, to properly vet applicants and hire/retain the best in the applicant pool, right?

More than likely, a prayer walk with corresponding ballon release to the treatment plant could have prevented. The Mayor may be a great guy! He has now proven over five years, that not many qualified people in any department will work for him. The news get worse, he gets to stay a few more years. The City has bright spots but become fewer each year. The media does zero for accountability. They have become a non-factor and at current path will join the Clarion-Ledger. All self-inflicted, over the past forty years we have elected completely incompetent people either based on politics or race. Forget being qualified! Started with Ditto and long list of afterwards. Crime is not even calculable at this point, roads are terrible, no water and reality no anything. KF please go interview 3-5 random people in each of our seven wards and ask them to name three positive things that have occurred in their district in the last year, five, ten, twenty. Then name each politician that serves them.

6:21 nails it.

If you have the means to leave Jackson and stayed anyway, you chose this. Good luck.

Bennie can turn it around. He "want's" the City of Jackson.

“The issues that Jackson faces are issues that many communities across this country face. Disproportionately in areas where we have black and brown, and tribal communities,” Regan said.

It's not the city administration's fault -- it's systemic racism! But, even though local funds have been squandered and water bills have not been issued, the Feds will come to the rescue.

True but he ain’t getting it! Even if he did get the rest of Jackson it would not be enough population for him since he lost over 60k . He ll be headed to Natchez.

Bad batch of chemicals is the coverup for operator error.

Mr. Ben Dover said...

All of Jackistan is currently under a boil water notice. Still glad that y'all re-elected the boy mayor Chowke?

@8:15 AM he's getting all of Jackson and more elsewhere.

Biden is the only hope for Jackson water woes.

500,000,000 is not enough but it’ll keep people busy for 5 plus years.

Anonymous said...

Any way to blame this on climate change?

Asking for an acquaintance on Eastmont.

Regan's visit was nothing more than political white noise and spin.

If he and Lumumba were truly serious they would have toured Savanna Street where Jackson hasn't come close to living up to the terms of a consent decree from eight years ago.

All this BS about 'environmental justice' while the city is bathing in surface sewage discharges. Just last August it was disclosed that Jackson in 2020 discharged 523 MILLION gallons of untreated sewage into the environment and 6 BILLION gallons of only partially treated sewage directly into the Pearl. Can you say third f'ing world?

Spare us the admonitions about 'great news from today'. It was only the same Biden/Thompson/Lumumba failures on parade.

Anonymous said...

No one can really at this point have words that will actually matter. It doesn't make any difference folks. It's over.

Anonymous said...

Damn white people. It's all your fault.

Anonymous said...

@9:23 discharges into the Pearl River are criminal.

MDEQ & EPA, toothless paper tigers.

Jackson could stop treating sewage entirely, nothing would happen.

Fortunes of time, money, effort spent by ostensible environmentalists opposing Yazoo Pumps.

While Jackson causes, maintains river eco-dead zone south for 150 miles.

Clean water? Nothing but bromides.

Attn 9:52 Have you EVER driven by the Nissan plant you speak of.? You apparently did not see that huge white water tower on or next to the Nissan plant. I guess you think Jackson ships the plant their needed water.

Anonymous said...

Attn 9:53 It is my understanding that the city did not discharge untreated sewage. They paid a company (named Rebel no less) to dump it in the Pearl River.

Anonymous said...

Gold Coast & raw sewage, two different issues, catch up.

Anonymous said...

@10:59 Jackson does ship water to the Nissan Plant. Water leaves the OB Curtis facility and runs through a large waterline owned by the state of Mississippi. So Jackson sells the water to the state, the state sells it to CMU, and CMU sells it to Nissan. Actually Nissan and 4 different tier-one suppliers all use water from OB Curtis. When Jackson is unable to provide water at all, generally Bear Creek Water Association opens a valve and supplies the line as the backup supplier. So on a normal day, the Nissan plant is absolutely using water from Jackson.

Now they tell me. Gonna take a week to pee off this doo doo on my toilet ring.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
