Leftenent Governor Delbert Hosemann issued the following statement.
Citizen-driven ballot initiatives are an important part of policy-making, and I support reenacting the ballot initiative process. I also support a medical marijuana program, as evidenced by the Senate twice passing back-stop legislation which did not survive in the House. We are in the process of talking to Senators about the Supreme Court ruling as it relates to both issues and how to proceed.
If the Governor chooses to call the Legislature back into Special Session, the Senate will be ready. Because Special Sessions are expensive, my preference is to approach this situation in an organized fashion so when we do return we can minimize costs to taxpayers.”

I’m willing to bet this wasn’t the result of Mayor Mary alone. I’m betting there were certain members of the legislature who were behind this. They lost the vote and wanted to write the legislation their way all along. Still usurping the right of the people. We will see how this turns out but the new bill will likely create an exception for municipalities or counties to opt out kinda how we have some dry counties now. I think that is fair.
Speaker Gunn and Lt. Governor Hoseman:
Do you really think the voters of this state are this dumb? Really? After what the both of you have pulled with this fiasco.
Umm.
This is the legislative equivalent of "we need a mulligan" here on both fixing the initiative process in the Mississippi Constitution and passing a medical marijuana program which is manageable and taxable and which allows a reasonable opt-out for those municipalities or counties who wish to remain weed-free. Both the House and Senate had a complete round of legislative effort to make both those fixes. They should have to stew in the mix of their own failures until January. Then, let's see how quickly they can fix Section 273(3) and pass a medical marijuana bill. There should be no special session.
He sounds like that warden in ShawShank...
"These men can learn the value of an honest day's labor, while providing a valuable service to the community and at a bare minimum of expense to Mr. and Mrs. John Q Taxpayer.
@2:14pm - Yes, they are, actually.
There going to stall with some small change and never get to medical marijuana until next year. Which means people will not see MM until 2023.
Hopefully the feds fix this and we don’t have to rely on our pitiful state government to lift a damn finger.
2:13 - I'll take your bet and raise you double.
Your theory about WHY that might have happened is good, but the legislature and its leaders aren't that much ahead of the game. They would have never thought it out, and once the Mayor took action, it was too late for them to lead the parade so they didn't even ride in the wagon.
@2;36 Exactly what are you talking about man? Let them stew in the mix of their own failures until January? These clowns have been stewing in their failures for decades. They could care less. Nothing would make them happier than to sit on their thumbs until January. Then they may get around to passing some sort of MM legislation about the end of March. And of course the licensing for growers would roll around about August. Then sometime in 2023 we may get chance to see something for sale. Letting these guys sit around for another ten months is not a good ideal.
This was delberts plan all along a bill to fix 273 passed the house and died in the senate floor this was the plan all along when vote was tallied. He knew court would throw out 65. Now the senate can create own plan.
At the risk of seeming obtuse, Dilbert - a Jeb Bush style liberal weakling blowing the wind; and every one of my run-ins with people getting "medical" marijuana have been people who wanted easy dope going to shady doctors for permission using one of the canned comically ridiculous reasons.
There sure are a lot of commenters arguing for medical marijuana. Do all of you have cancer or some other "painful" disease? Try morphine or move to Colorado.
No incumbents next time around
The 420 crowd on reddit missisppi are pissed
Why does tater tot have to study the opinion on Initiative 65 to make a call on a special session? Maybe for redo of the initiative process but not on the issue of medical marijuana. This is a no brainer. The voters have spoken, and they are not stupid. So, there is nothing to study. This arrogant snub of the citizenry of this state will not be forgotten. The voters wanted medical marijuana this year, and the elected leaders of this state better listen. We demand a special session.
9:55,
Yes, voters are stupid. Not all of them but a vast majority do not educate themselves on candidates or issues. Now that being said, this initiative was a smoke screen by Bomgar. Period.
71% of the people that voted for it did not know much past 'Medical Marijuana." who thinks that 2.5 oz is a reasonable amount to receive. That is absolutely a rediculous amount of weed. But I digress.
Carry one stooges. And while you are at it, why don't you rubes that know everything run for the legislature. Surely you have time to impart your wisdom in the halls of the capitol.
We need an ORGANIZED EFFORT to vote out any incumbent, not just because of the MM debacle; MS needs a restart.
1:56 regardless of what you say the majority prevailed period. Get over it.
7:35 - I'm with you. I will not vote for a single incumbent.
Same for me 10:40.
I don't expect anyone to care but I will not vote for a single incumbent.
It will be interesting to see if this is in fact a turning point of politics in Mississippi and it mobilizes people to action.
