Quinn responds to bankruptcy story

Jackson Mayoral candidate Regina Quinn responded to a Clarion-Ledger story earlier this week. The newspaper reported:

"A Jackson mayoral candidate filed twice for bankruptcy in a span of 10 years — once for not paying her income taxes — but she insists that her financial woes turned out to be a success story.

Regina Quinn, who is attempting to become the city’s first female mayor, filed for bankruptcy in 1997, and then again in 2006, because of various personal and business-related debts she couldn’t pay. Both debts are now paid off, according to documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Quinn, an attorney and a developer, said she was self-employed when she filed the first time but later filed again when she was general counsel for Jackson State University when unpaid income taxes piled up.

“We just had to take the tough medicine and go ahead and file,” Quinn said, recalling how she used to advise reluctant businesses to do the same thing. “Nobody wants to do that obviously.”

A copy of her 1997 filing could not be obtained through electronic court records. Quinn said her small business, a law firm, was underfunded at a time when she was struggling to pay off student loans she incurred in law school.

She filed for bankruptcy again nine years later, when the IRS attempted to collect $117,000 in unpaid income taxes. They were paid off by 2010 through a wage garnishment set up with JSU
...." Article

The Quinn campaign responded in this press release:

"On January 29, 2013 I did an interview with The Jackson Free Press, where I discussed my candidacy for mayor of the city of Jackson. In an effort to be transparent about my life experiences, I shared that I had successfully addressed a business challenge I experienced by filing bankruptcy.

Earlier this week a staff member of my campaign received a call from the Clarion Ledger based on an apparent influx of smearing calls from my opponents. Sadly, those people failed to appreciate my ability to deal with challenges face on. This ability to deal with challenges and issues face on is one of the qualities that I am most proud. With the recent incidents of lawsuits from the federal government and Jackson Public Schools, clearly this shows instability. I want to relay to the citizens that they will have a mayor who understands hardship. I pledge to bring this same fortitude and transparency to the office of mayor. I am convinced that it's time for a new direction. I want the citizens to know they can count on Regina Quinn as mayor to take this city in a New Direction

Would a bank hire for its President a person who had filed for bankruptcy even once? Rhetorical question.

How many hundreds of thousands of us have at some time been challenged by a school loan (or some other stack of bills) and considered ourselves "UNDERFUNDED", yet didn't file for bankruptcy? We either sold stuff or took a second or third job. I did.

Jonathan Lee is the Logical choice , but the majority of the citizens resent him for his success and feel he is the candidate for the 39211 area. Hopefully this will see the city as a whole needs to reflect that area to prosper. How can Quinn manage the City and can't keep her own house in order.

Lee doesn't even have all the White Power Structure in his corner. He doesn't make the run-off.

I think she wins the election . This is Stokesburg.

What a wonderful choice to lead Jackson! She could surely secure the $200 million JSU dome, re-pave every street in Jackson, line the sidewalks in gold...then do what she does best...file bankruptcy for the city of Jackson.

Jackson's bankruptcy die has already been cast. Jackson is terminal.

I thought about giving Quinn a donation but she may use it to pay off the bills she's accumulated since the last bankruptcy.

Judgmental bunch around here. Don't here much from ye faithful-flock when Haley or "Feels" MDA hands out hundreds of millions of our state tax dollars to out of state and out of the USA companies for some pie in the sky econ. dev. project to make biofuels or solar panels or some other utopian crap, but a small business owner trying to make a living in Mississippi falls on hard times and you are ready to pounce.

Ability to deal with challenges and issues head on? Head on does not mean bailing out through bankruptcy! that is the easy way out!!!

"Jealous of his/her success". We see that comment thrown around on multiple blog threads here. Makes zero sense. Who would NOT want as mayor a person who HAS been successful?

And who would be foolish enough to give the vault keys to a person who cannot manage personal finances and twice filed bankruptcy?

@10:37, a bank wouldn’t hire a teller with two bankruptcies. Is anyone else wondering about the pattern here? Quinn has been fired form Jackson State, She filed for bankruptcy twice, and according to an article in the Ledger last week her campaign is in violation of campaign finance laws (along with most of the bunch). What the hell is going on in this country when a person with this kind of record is considered a frontrunner in a mayoral election?

You judgmental douchebags get off your high horses. Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, Milton Hershey and HJ Heinz are just a few of the revered and otherwise successful Americans who have filed for bankruptcy at some point in their lives.

Hmmm.... ignorance and bias are the order of the day. Why are we discussing a bank President again? Is being a bank president the criteria? when is the last time a bank president has been Mayor and do you see one running. That's actually irrelevant. Clearly, a few of you naysayers have forgotten about the many succcessful people who have filed bankruptcy and still run for office....Donald Trump is quick person that comes to mind. His bankruptcy did not preclude his candidacy. I am sure upon further inquiry anyone doing any real research will find that there are many people that are followers/supporters of this blog have filed bankruptcy or even other issues. Bankruptcy is not punitive but a method within the law that allows financial reorganization. She is an attractive candidate for many reasons. Throughout her career she has represented her legal clients well, including Jackson State and other small businesses throughout Jackson. She is from Jackson and appreciates the many struggles the average citizen of Jackson, most importantly the children. Her house is in order and she is ready to be the next mayor of Jackson.

If your past dictated your present course in life I am not sure many could eclipse and reach the spot we are currently striving for! However we are fortunate that isn't the case in life or on this issue. Regina Quinn and her campaign have been VERY forthcoming, open, and transparent about her past including things she described herself as struggling through. Luckily she emerged from the other side of all this stronger, more settled, and all of her houses in order! When can someone last tell me that when they ran for a campaign office started by telling you the good, the bad, and the just ok stuff out of the gates? This is the attitude and tense the City of Jackson needs right now?! We sit by while the Mayor of Jackson is bragging about fixing potholes around the city. Well if you have the crumbling infrastructure the City of Jackson does all you can do is delayed maintenance which is more costly for the City of Jackson. How is it "having your house in order" to run a city by paying more and more to string along failing infrastructure, paying fines for failing to be in compliance, and losing a business tax base everyday?

I am all about the issues, but let's get out of the mud and have a serious adult conversation about the future of our city. The old "wag the tail on the dog" tricks are very unattractive.

'successfully addressed a business challenge' = not paying bills/taxes?!

It is ridiculous to suggest that someone with this kind of professional track record is the best candidate, or even qualified, to be Mayor. It's not personal and it's not a smear. The press release makes it worse!

How is it bailing out if she paid the debt off?

11:13:

you must be a relative. i know of one atty who filed a ch.13 because of medical bills and no health ins. -- of course there are others, but are they running for mayor?

did she file a 13 or a 7? saying her firm was 'underfunded' is a joke.yes, very attractive and her house is in the right order to run a bankrupt capitol that was in great shape when i moved here in the 70's...

Axe Ash said...

Everybody who files bankruptcy is 'underfunded'.

Quinn doesn't matter just as Lee doesn't matter. Funding their campaigns is good for the process but bad for influence @ City Hall because in the end neither of them makes the run-off.

What is going to be the absolute hoot in this election is whether the White Power Structure gets behind Chokwe in the run-off.

Will they hold their nose and vote for the Mayor they hate or vote for the divisive black nationalist who has spent his life fomenting black hate for whites?

The only election that would be funnier would be whites having to pick between Harvey or Kenny Stokes.

Ask Herb Irvin, 9:00. He is her counsel of record.

Cannot imagine anyone supporting him.

8:56; 'the white power structure' can shuffle their money amongst themselves but will have little, if anything, to say about the mayoral election. They can run ads, rent ball-rooms, reserve sections of restaurants and meet inside gated driveways....BUT, they cannot control the vote in Stokesville!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
