Cars purchased. Mike Brown pays tax collector.... in Rankin.

Cars, cars, and more cars. Not just any cars but the German variety. Jackson Jambalaya obtained from a list of checks written on estate money meant for De Mon McClinton. Attorney Mike Brown provided the list at his March 20 hearing that saw him incarcerated for contempt of court in the guardianship of De Mon McClinton. The list is five pages long and shows the spending of $1,250,593.

De Mon McClinton is the grandson of Mississippi civil rights legend and former WLBT owner Aaron Henry. Mr. Henry's daughter died and then 16 year-old De Mon inherited $3.5 million in 2001. Hinds County Chancery Court Judge Stuart Robinson approved Thomas McClinton as the guardian for De Mon. Thomas is the father of De Mon. The court ordered Mike Brown, the attorney for Thomas McClinton, to place the money in a FDIC-insured bank and further decreed no money could be spent without court approval. Unfortunately for De Mon, a great deal of money was spent without court approval.

The list shows vehicles were purchased:

2-21-01: Blackwell Imports, $54,070
2-21-01: Blackwell Imports, $42,186
2-21-01: Blackwell Imports, $50,582
2-22-01: Gray-Daniels: $26,500
2-22-01: North Park Acura: $26,500
3-7-01: Paul Moak, $35,750
3-8-01: Blackwell Auto Complex (American), $38,815
Total on cars within two week period: $274,403

What is interesting is several checks were made payable to the Rankin County Tax Collector after the cars were purchased. The petition filed on June 16, 2000 states Thomas McClinton was a resident of Hinds County: "Thomas A. McClinton, Jr. is an adult resident of Hinds County, Mississippi and resides at 811 Forest Avenue, Apartment 100, Jackson Mississippi 39206." The petition for approval of engagement letter filed on February 8, 2001 states Thomas McClinton is "an adult resident of Hinds County". However, Mike Brown has lived on Whipporwill Road in Rankin County since 1995 according to Rankin County tax records. No checks were made payable to the Hinds County Tax Collector. Mr. Brown wrote the following checks to the Rankin County Tax Collector:

2-21-01: $1,299
2-23-01: $154
2-26-01: $191

The February 21, 2001 check was written the same day several purchases were made at Blackwell Imports in Jackson. More purchases of cars were made later that month but only Blackwell Imports purchases were made prior to the writing of that check. One can imagine the court and the District Attorney will want to know if Mr. Brown purchased any cars for himself out of De Mon McClinton's account.

One check was written on March 19, 2001 for $50,000 to Lottie Campbell. It is not clear at this time what the relationship of Ms. Campbell was to Thomas McMclinton Several checks also are made out to Linus Shackelford. The court determined $500,000 was loaned to Mr. Shackelford out of De Mon's money. The checks are:

2-22-01: $300,000
9-7-01: $250,000
1-14-03: $35,000
3-26-03: $10,000
Total: $595,000

A hearing for Mr. Shackelford has been set for April 10. Judge Thomas ruled at a February hearing Mr. Brown never deposited the money in an account nor was one ever established. Judge Thomas threw Mr. Brown in jail after he could not account for the money. The attorney also claimed the file (he checked it out in 2006) and bank statements were destroyed when a water pipe burst in his office. Judge Thomas set bond at $100,000 at a later hearing. Mr. Brown made bail. Judge Thomas ordered him to deposit $1.2 million with the court or provide an accounting for all money for the guardianship of De Mon McClinton.

Judge Thomas assigned Special Master Paul Rogers to investigate the estate for the court (Copy of report). Mr. Rogers testified $1.2 million of De Mon McClinton's money went directly into Brown's attorney account at Trustmark and that the overall amount the attorney improperly received was $1.54 million. Mr. Rogers said those funds were used to loan nearly $600,000 to Linus Shackelford. Brown also loaned himself money out of the account. Rogers also took issue with the $398,000 fee Brown charged the estate in 2001 for establishing the guardianship. He said Brown would have had to devote nearly two thousand hours at his $150 per hour rate to earn that fee, which he said was impossible. He also said Brown's fee of $110,00o for an opinion letter was "fraud" as he literally copied an opinion letter from another attorney.

His report states accounts were opened for the money but the bank was never informed of the court restrictions. The report also states Thomas McClinton, Mike Brown, and to a lesser degree Linus Shackelford (through loans) helped themselves to a great deal of money that was supposed to be held in trust for youg De Mon. Judge Thomas again incarcerated Mr. Brown on contempt of court charges and set bail at $250,000. He bailed out of jail last week. The court froze all assets of Mike Brown and Linus Shackelford.

They are a real Dumb & Dumber!

This just makes me sick. To think of someone's financial legacy meant for a child to be stolen and squandered so greedily. The timeline of these purchases is nauseating...Brown is handed a check and practically heads straight to Blackwell. Not that it matters, but why so many damn cars when you live in an APARTMENT?! Brown behaved like a rapper getting signed to his first recording contract. Bad enough to steal but then to be so tacky about it...yuccckkk

Wouldn't it be a matter of public record who was listed as owner of each car on the application for title filled out by the dealer at the points of sale? He obviously wasn't buying all these cars for himself. Why the hell would he buy them for relatives of the Henry grandson?

BeeJesus! This reminds me of mobile homes bought by Ole Miss alumni and contributors.

I gather that these were all checks written and signed by Mike Brown on McClinton's guardianship accounts or Brown's "Trust" account (if that's not a misnomer I don't know what is). I'm lik3 9:14 and am curious to know whose name is on the title, which should be the same name that's on the tag receipts. This whole story just keeps getting sicker and sicker.

Lottie Campbell owned some land that Linus Shackelford wanted to purchase or did purchase.

Is there anyway for this guy to get any of his money back from those sorry crooks

Anonymous said...

I imagine both of these crooks will file for bankruptcy and there won't be anything there for young McClinton to recover. This is one time when I wish we still had debtors' prisons. I just hope that they'll be tried as criminals and forced to pay for their misdeeds.

Anonymous said...

bankruptcy doesnt protect illegal acts/debts.

Anonymous said...

Since Brown has bonded out on his contempt charge... What happens to him now? Surely this is not the end of it for him. Can't the court seize all of his and Shackelford's assets and liquidate them so this young man can recover at least some of his money?

Anonymous said...

Hell is hot! This guy gives all crooked lawyers a bad name. He is world class scum.

Anonymous said...

While I think it is an absolute shame, much less the criminal aspect involved, that these three folks (McClinton, the dad; Brown, his lawyer; and Shackelford, Brown's buddy and partner) all stole what was given to this young man.

Even though it was the Federal Government's 'handing' the fortune to his grandfather, Aaron Henry. WLBT was taken away from a local business and the license transferred to Henry only because he had made a name for himself in the civil rights movement. Henry did nothing to 'make' this fortune except being at the right place at the right time and the Feds put the fortune in his hands.

Guess 'what is given can be stolen' is the new idiom of the old proverb.

Don't misread this - the feds giving LBT to Henry was nothing to do with this young man. He inherited his millions fair and square. Too bad he had such a sorry excuse for a father, that would hire such a sorry excuse for a lawyer that would attempt to steal it all. Hope they fry in hell. And hope that there is still some things of value in Brown's name that DeMon can end up with to liquidate and get a portion of his inheritence.

Brown still must have some of the money to be able to get bonded out! All the funds might be in his wife's name or parents in law's but they will go thru that fast now. I guess that Porsche Brown use to have was a gift from DeMon! Lol, I am sure DeMon does not find that funny. The big question for me is how did the daddy hook up with Browm? Because that was the first major mistake!

Brown testified Thomas had to go to court to get custody of his son when rebecca died as the Henry family did not want him to get De Mon. After reading the special master's report and this list, I'm starting to see why they wanted to keep custody.

Assets have loan out against them. The Cemetery is worth $350-400k. The bank has more than that against it plus the IRS has a 350k lien on him, plus Cold Spings Granite has a Judgement. MClnton is last in line. That's like owing 2 million on a house worth 250k. This guy not only steels but he makes poor business deals. If someone stole a buck from my son they would pay with boots.

Shadowfax said...

It's been asked before (and ignored before), but, does anybody have a clue where Aaron Henry got two million bucks?

someone asked att the titles on cars mike bought on of them was the pool man girl friend BMW!!!!!!!!!!

I am a victim to how can Shackleford get by knowing he signed the promisery note to Demon that Mike brown made up just in case they got caught

Anonymous said...

is anyone going to check mike and Sara brown IRS taxe returns for the last few years and check Shackleford alsoe

Kingfish said...

Well Shadow, maybe if you would read the actual posts, you would now the answer to that question. Start with the first one on Mike Brown.

Anonymous said...

From my business law class many moons ago, for a contract such as a promissory note to be valid it had to be legal. Since it wasn't approved by the court, it doesn't seem to meet that criteria and, therefore, wouldn't be worth the paper it was written on. To me, this whole thing boils down to the fact that Brown and Shackelford don't have pots to pee in (which is where Brown's law license should be soon), so there's nothing for DaMon to recover. Hopefully, the Hinds County DA is at work on this thing and criminal charges are forthcoming. Would love to hear what Brown's telling his wife about this whole thing, bless her heart.

Shadow - since you obviously have a problem with your reading skills, I'll try to put it very simply here.

The FCC took the license away from Lamar Life Insurance for television station WLBT in the mid-1960's.

FCC in mid-1960's gave the license for television station WLBT to a group headed by then NAACP President (Mississippi branch) Aaron Henry.

Aaron Henry, a pharmacist from Clarksdale immediately became wealthy because he was the new owner of television station WLBT.

A few decades later, Aaron Henry sold his interest in television station WLBT for some $8 million.

That is how he became worth $2 million, which was your question. But the fact is, that is how he became worth $8 million. The federal government gave him the license to a television station (WLBT).

Was that explained simply enough for you to understand??

The pool mans x wife is driving the BMW

Wonder who trust ark officer was that approved large amtstransactions spill the beans

In reading the report from the last court hearing, a big part of the problem was that Brown never provided a copy of the guardianship order to the bank. As such, they had no way of knowing that there were restrictions placed on the money by the court. This is all Brown's fault, not the bank's.

Anonymous said...

So whats next for mike brown??????

Anonymous said...

Everything mike brown has, he says is in his wife's and in laws name most of it is florida

Anonymous said...

So the pool man is the attorney that is representing brown now? Isn't that relationship a little "fishy"? Shackelford too, the closeness of these men seems to be SO much more than buddies/conmen. I'm just saying that they are awfully "close" and they're still protecting each other. Interesting for sure.

Anonymous said...

The pool man sells pools, not an atty they r very close,as taking trips to austrialia and spending all kinds of money, the pool man knows everything and I do mean everything they r joined at the hip. Mike stayed at his house can and went as he pleased

Why would Bozeman be protecting these men??????

Isn't Shackelford due in court tomorrow? Should make for another interesting chapter in this saga.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
