Some of our local residents are unfortunately picking up the more international aspects of soccer. The Clarion-Ledger reports:
"The parent of two Clinton High soccer players allegedly ran onto the field after his son received a red card and was ejected during Clinton High’s game against Ocean Springs High in the Northwest Rankin High invitational tournament.
The parent was identified by Clinton High athletic director Scott Brown as Jim Gulley, the father of players James Gulley and Kellen Gulley. The elder Gulley allegedly chest-bumped two referees.
The game at Jackson’s Newell Field ended in a 1-1 tie, with the altercation occurring immediately after Ocean Springs landed a penalty kick to tie the score.
Clinton High is awaiting any action by the MHSAA. The game was captured on film, including the incident involving Gulley...." Clinton Scrum
One of the comments on the CL website says:
"Add insult to injury, the "child" that was ejected in this game for language "F-Bomb Barrage" ; left after that game for his club tourney in Memphis. In his first game of that tournament was ejected for language and his mouth......EJECTED IN A GAME 4 hours later! This kid and team should be banned for the season.....SIMPLE." (See comment below for clarification)
Now for the rest of the story as the reporter almost gets it right but not quite. The little punk was red-carded for saying the F word on the field. When he got the red card, he then kicked the ball into the woods. His father has been banned before for this type of behavior but apparently didn't learn his lesson as temper tantrums are a family trait among the Gulleys. He stormed onto the field, chest bumped and pushed the two referees (one of whom was a 20-year old girl). He should be banned permanently. As for Clinton High School, if this is not the first incident involving this child or parent while young Gulley is a player on the team, kick him off the team for good and punish the school.

Close, but not quite right. When James Gulley went to the GIT Tourney afterwards, he did not get a red card for foul language in his first game. He received two yellows, which then is a red for pushing type behaviors, very common in older ages with their aggressive and physical play.
Also, the 20 year old WAS one of the 2 referees. She is the daughter of the center referee. Both have filed charges in Jackson for simple assault.
Be careful quoting comments on the CL website. Many just are jealous of the kid's talent. Granted, he was WAY out of line, but punish him for what he did, not what others SAY he did. He's banned for 5 games. Not enough if you ask me.
His younger brother has rarely shown any type of that behavior and should not be lumped in with him.
Thanks. Talked to two people who were there. If you're wondering why I am even writing about this, well, the referee was my recruiter who signed me up for the reserves. Mess with him you mess with me.
By the way, I must disagree on one of your comments. I played soccer for five years and was pretty rough. But when I got a yellow card I knew it was time to back off. Hardly ever saw someone getting redcarded for two yellows. Either you blew up or you didn't. A yellow card was pretty much sufficient to settle you down or the coach would pull you.
I'd say he has an anger management issue. They need to teach him a lesson NOW because his parents obviously aren't doing so. He sits his ass out for a long time, he'll learn.
How cruel Kingfish. You want to dwarf his personal development and have his inner child suffer for years? The poor child is just misunderstood and needs a hug. He needs our approval so he can have an enhanced self-esteem...
And then I woke up from my Nyquil induced sleep thinking "that boy AND his daddy needs their azz beat."
Someone wrote that the referees were filing simple assault charges. As a fellow sports official I certainly hope they do follow through and file charges.
In Louisiana an assualt against a sports official carries a mandatory 3X the normal punishment for the offense. I know that I will file charges on anyone that assaults me and do my best to see that the maximum penalty is placed on that person.
That's my biological father who left my mom with 3 kids aged 3, 2 and new and hasn't had contact with me since I was five.... Doesn't look like he's matured with age. Way to go 'DAD'.
sorry. Hope things eventually turned out better for y'all.

If you didn't play select, then that is why. Very agressive, talented kids often go back in the game after a yellow, only to get a second and are then ejected (red). Sometimes it's deserved, sometimes the referees call the game much tighter at the older ages. Two shirt pulls is different than two trips.
Clinton and Ocean Springs , 2 of the top boys teams in class 6A, were matched up in the NWR Tournament for this particular game in 2009.
Extremely physical game by both sides with Clinton up 1-0 late . Center ref awards Clinton a PK, then changes his mind just before the kick. 1 minute remaining, OS sent a long ball into the box, Clinton GK , comes out to make the catch above and an OS player reaches up with a hand and bats the ball toward the goal where a Clinton defender shouldered the ball away. Center ref awards OS a PK and connects for a 1-1 tie. Obviously , Clinton was upset. At the re start, the center ref decides to call the game and Gulley punted the ball in the air. Gulley said nothing. The center gave him a red card. Gulley walked off without saying a word. The Dad then comes on to the field to have a word with the center. The female linesman jumped between the Dad and the center and yelled at him to get off the field. The Dad, with his right arm , barely made contact with the female, and said " Get back wench"
. The Clinton coach grabbed the Dad from behind and removed him from the field. That is all that happened from the Clinton side. The referees, OS, and the NWR host (head coach) took it upon themselves to blow this up as big as possible simply because Clinton, ranked #1 , and was heavily favored to win the 6A title. The NWR host/coach went after James Gulley hard to try and end his season. It is all on video with proof but no one would look at it. James was suspended 5 games. Charges were dropped against the Dad and he was not allowed to any more HS athletic events.
The press jumped all over it and blew it up.
There were wrong doings but nothing drastic.
Nothing compares to NWR and Gulfport boys huge fight in the State title game the next year.
Obviously the last comment is someone from Clinton defending a moron who ran on the field. The guy is lucky he didn't run into the wrong referee. He should of been charged with assault. There's no defending a fan who thinks they know the game better than everyone else.
