Ag Commish Andrew Gipson issued the following statement.
Today, Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson announced that the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC) will begin accepting a new round of applications for its Wild Hog Control Program (WHCP) starting today, May 1. The application period will remain open until May 15, 2026. All Mississippi counties are eligible for the application period.
“I encourage landowners and managers impacted by wild hogs to a apply for participation in the Wild Hog Control Program,” said Commissioner Gipson. “This trapping program continues to deliver positive results in the fight against these destructive nuisance animals, which cause significant damage to farmland and forestlands across Mississippi.”
Through the WHCP, MDAC provides “smart” traps to landowners and managers for the control of wild hogs on private agricultural and forestry lands in Mississippi. MDAC provides the training necessary to use the “smart” traps and technical guidance regarding the most effective methods to trap and control wild hogs on private lands.
Applications must be completed and submitted online at www.mdac.ms.gov/whcp. Submitted applications will be evaluated based on the number of acres available for trapping, historical agricultural losses caused by wild hogs on the property and current trapping efforts on the property. A cooperative application is encouraged for small acreage (i.e., adjoining land managers of small parcels should work together to submit one application). Traps will be available for one-month intervals, dependent upon use and success. One trap per 500 acres is recommended, depending on landscape and land use.
Visit www.mdac.ms.gov/whcp for program guidelines, applications and additional information. Submit questions regarding the WHCP to Harold Leonard at HaroldL@mdac.ms.gov.

'Historic' and 'Historical' are not interchangeable. Someone may wish to refer to a dictionary, in order to choose the correct word.
What do they do with the captured pigs?
Yes, someone might. And that someone is you. Historic refers to significant or meaningful. Think Black Friday '87 in the stock market. That was an historic loss.
Historical (used correctly in the article) refers to measured past losses, usually involving data and studies and such.
The more you know.
@9:00 There's multiple things that could be done. Kill them and leave for buzzards and worms. Clean and process them like deer. Check with neighbors and provide them with meat. We had a trap last year and killed a lot of hogs. I got a couple of 50-60 pounders and got summer sausage and smoked sausage made and it's fantastic.

I turn mine into sausage. Wild hog sausage is delicious.
Is it legel to hunt them in MS with a lawfully owned machine gun?
Eliminate then repurpose them.
Can I sign up to buy one? Husband and I make venison sausage and I'm sure we could make some darned good wild hog sausage, too. Commissioner should hold a raffle for the meat.
You make it, I'll buy it.
I thought they could not be used for sale, eating, or donating. Thought they had to be buried on the land they were caught on.
