“Man on the street” interviews show the true feelings of average Americans on any given day. “What happened in Washington, DC, Saturday night, April 25, at the Washington Hilton?” Uh, I don’t know, what?
It’s not just that we are ignorant of history. It’s that we’re voluntarily ignorant of current events destined to become history. “There was a third attempt on President Trump’s life!” Oh, that…. There will likely be more. You know how everyone hates him and what he’s done to America. Everybody says he’s a…. “Stop it! Just stop it!!!”
And, in the halls of Congress, Senator Schumer is fighting against America increasing funding for federal law enforcement saying, “Senate Republicans want to pour $75 billion into ICE and Border Patrol without putting any restraints on these rogue agencies’ rampant violence in our streets.” Seems like just yesterday when Senator Dirksen was saying, “A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon, you're talking real money.”
Every administration in Washington has its own cadence. The last one just about rocked all of us to sleep. President Trump’s administration has rocked us all wide awake again … and then some! There’re tariffs and wars, high gas prices and affordability issues and such. We were all so much more comfortable during President Biden’s time in office with plenty of time for ice cream and sunning on the beach. Everything was running on cruise control. Biden’s autopen resolved more crises than anyone ever imagined.
The news media itself has dumbed down even the most spectacular events in the past few weeks. Going to the moon? Been there before, even landed on it that time. And there’s that imminent threat from Iran about a nuclear bomb thing. Nobody in the Democrat Party or in the media believe anything was imminent. Who even knew it was a crisis? President Trump and his team certainly thought the sky was falling.
The point, if you’ve been waiting for one, is no one really cares or pays attention any more to the national grind of daily news. There’re no consequences. There are no tests. Nothing has really changed our way of life. Oh sure, we could parrot the media and complain about how bad things are. You know gas prices and just plain affordable things are not affordable like they were before all the news and demonstrations told us things have never been this bad in America. We even have someone claiming to be king and demonstrators are marching on the street corners with their little hand-painted poster board signs.
Cheer up! Memorial Day is coming! This year’s July 4th is shaping up to be a big national event! Gas prices are primed to drop just in time for summer vacations! There’s nothing really to worry about if you don’t know what’s happening. We can take whatever may come. It’s always a surprise anyway. Who knew?
What could possibly happen in the heat of summer to mess up our plans? Could we have terrorist attacks from Iranian cells that formed here during open borders? What about cyber-attacks on our communication grids, power grids, or water grids? Those who are charged with protecting us from such attacks haven’t been paid in quite some time. It’s something to do with politics.
What does the man on the street know anyway?

If the man on the street watches nothing but Fox Entertainment a/k/a "News", then he knows only the MAGA talking points and not much else.
Before D.L. comments on the ICE budget, he ought to know that ICE was already fully funded and not increase was needed.
It's just math and actually understanding financing , budgeting and the deficit which is increasing with no pandemic to explain it.
As of today, for this year, the $3.65 trillion Presidential spending is an increase of $84 billion from the previous year. during the same period. So the pace of spending is already 2.1% higher. And these stats are from this administration's own reports.
As for me, all the gold froufrou, and marble (which stains and damages easily) in bath reno when porcelain or quartz is more durable , pouring concrete over a garden and now painting the bottom of the reflecting pool which will look like a swimming pool instead of a reflection pond, and now re-doing the " gift" plane is not help our citizens and it's whether it's ours or his is murky from the comments he makes. But Trump's net worth has already increase from $1.4 to $3 billion since he took this oath of office. We all knew his previous financial history of declaring bankruptcy and not paying debts. He's our newest version PT Barnum, travelling tent preacher with no church affiliation and the old snake oil salesman. He's profiting, we are NOT!
“The news media itself has dumbed down ….”
And this column is no exception !
Indeed we are all dumber for its existence
Where was that rock you were hiding under when Slow Joe was president? We still do not know who was the real president during his term but we do have a good idea. I think he was involved in the plane full of cash going to another country in the cover of night. Do you remember back about four years ago when gas was higher than it is now?
Funny thing about Trump's finances. Using back of the envelope math and publicly-available information, Fred and Mary Trump transferred about $1 billion to their children and left about $300-500 million behind at death. If the children had put $1 billion into, for example, funds that track the S&P 500 in 2000 (Fred passed in 1999, Mary in 2000), it'd be about $8 billion today. Had they invested it in Berkshire A in 2000, it'd be about $10 billion. Obviously, Forrest Gump-like investing in every Apple, Meta, Amazon, etc. would have produced exponentially more but that isn't really a fair or reasonable expectation of Trump or any other real person. A fair number of Wall Street folks have increased their net worth well beyond what Donald Trump managed to do. At best, Mr. "Art of the Deal" had, prior to this term as POTUS, broken even after 50 years of "artistry." I'd say he isn't much of an artist unless "con" precedes the word. For those who would bleat "TDS! TDS!," I'm just applying math to the numbers. It has nothing to do with personal feelings about him, money, Wall Street, or those who have made fortunes there, in "tech," or anywhere else. The simple fact is that the math shows he really isn't much of a money-maker or manager and never has been.
It’s too depressing to watch the latest scandal this administration creates day in and day out. There’s nothing good that’s going to happen so might as well be comfortable watching it all burn down. Hundreds of years of progress get wiped daily. Anyone with a shred of morality has thrown up their hands long ago and realized there’s no fixing this mess.
@10:18 - it’s probably better for your mental health than knowing the truth and actually caring about the state of things.
Most men and women on the street are struggling to figure out how to pay for increased gas prices, increased food prices, rent or house payments and insurance on homes and vehicles. Worrying about the rest of the world and its problems becomes secondary when you’re just trying to make it through this week, or this day. President Trump has forgotten about his Make America Affordable Again promise. Ask the man in the street how that is working out. I believe in America and The American People. We find a way, however it is very difficult for many these days. Here’s hoping and praying for better days ahead.
I know from this column that DL don't know shite from shinola.
I came to the same conclusion almost a month ago. /s
Trump looks like a beginner when compared to many of the politicians. Many of them had nothing when they were elected but are billionaires now. It sort of seems strange how politicians do so much better at balancing their own budgets to become rich when they cannot even break even when it comes to our countgry.
Harvard/Harris poll Apr 26 shows strong public approval for Trump's Iran policies.
The man on the street has become so confused by the deception coming from both sides of the political spectrum that he simply has no time to process "information". We live in a time when you can get three different versions of the same event all in real time. There's a spin on everything. And we have a national leader who has no regard for facts unless they favor his policy. He might say damn near anything. So what's the man on the street to believe?
"Most" Seriously?
When gas hits $6.00 and Diesel hits $8.00 by Memorial Day the support will be even yooger.
"Harvard/Harris poll Apr 26 shows strong public approval for Trump's Iran policies."
It did? I'd love to see the citation for that claim because, AFAIK, it didn't even ask a question that could be twisted into THAT conclusion.
So many attempts on Trumps life and these guys are getting close. Makes you wonder if the quality of the protection is lacking. There were a least a dozen attempts on Obama’s life and they never got this close .
