The Ever-Shrinking Jackson Zoo

Jackson's zoological collection shrunk by half in only six years.

JJ reported on May 10, 2018 the Jackson Zoo had a collection of 338 animals.

Unfortunately, the collection shrunk to 160 animals in July, a reduction of 47% in just six years.  The inventories from March 2018 and July 2024 are included in this post.  Read and weep.

21 employees tend to the Jackson Zoo.

When that one dude passed away a few years back, I knew it was on, and no one would have to come to work anymore. THe USDA should arrest people for what is going on there. This the same admin that cant keep the city pound open....No $$$ in it.

Error: The European Firebellied Toad is no longer at the zoo. Been moved to City Council.

This is disappointing. When my kids were growing up, the Jackson Zoo was a 'go to' place to have a good time. Now, with grandkids, they probably don't even know Jackson has a zoo.

Can the State take over the zoo and move it to LeFleur's Bluff?

Never liked looking at caged animals.

Close it

Not listed are the packs of feral dogs who roam the zoo grounds to maim and kill

Forget about revenue or crime in the surrounding areas or whatever else. The main point is it’s cruel to have such incompetence responsible for the care of such beautiful wild animals. They should do the right thing, sell the animals (and hopefully use the revenue for something productive, fat chance of that though), and use the zoo property for a park or walking trail of some sort. My main concern in all of this is animal welfare

When I was a kid, the only place to see animals other than the zoo was Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, which came on once a week, or World Book encyclopedia. However, that time has passed and so has the time for most zoos, especially those like Jackson’s.

Did y'all not get the memo that other states with a zoo support the zoo? No city alone can support a zoo when the rest of the state tries to make people afraid to go to it or even to downtown in broad daylight! And, we have money in the state treasury to renovate our zoo as well as secure it as I write. No...you think because you are afraid blacks will want revenge that you'll let our capitol city and zoo go to hell go to ruin and prove we are still a bunch of redneck racists. Do you really think other states were that dumb when their cities went through the typical decline all cities experience? God help us as we are too damn dumb to help ourselves!

Most states support their zoos. It's about pride. You know, kinda like keeping your yard mowed and your house painted. But, y'all just want to announce to the entire world that we are so racists that we will let everything go to hell in a handbasket even when we have the money in our state pocket to keep things that can bring revenue to the entire state well maintained.
To have so many nice people and good universities , the KKK and John Birch Society brain washing sure did the trick.
That chip on our shoulder from showing letting rednecks speak for us sure keeps us looking like a redneck state.

Guessing there are a few black widow spiders around there somewhere so I think it would be safe to add that line item back

11:24/11:40, you couldn’t decide how best to word a post so you just posted twice? Reading your attempt to write like a redneck is as painful as listening to Hillary & Kamala’s southern accents.

“The rest of the state” has nothing to do with the decline of the zoo. It’s all on the City of Jackson’s administration so don’t be trying to whip up any White guilt about it. It’s not the State’s responsibility to fund the zoo, and never has been.

Disregarding the racist rants, the only way the State of MS is going to support a zoo is if the state controlled and managed the zoo. There is no way the State is going to give the City of Jackson the money to run a zoo. The City would never give up the zoo even if it meant saving the neighborhood and contributing to the well being of all the citizens in the metro area. The continued incompetence of the City to run anything is truly astounding. If the State really wanted to promote zoos and tourism, it should look at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro.

What has the Mayor not screwed up with his incompetence & that of his appointees? Jackson is doomed!

Jackson is needing green spaces so bad they will sacrifice a library to make one. Why not make a green space where the zoo is located. The cost would be much cheaper and we wouldn't be encouraging animal cruelty.

The state doesn't discourage people from going downtown. The city does a good job of that all by itself.

Dude.... I'm not sure where you're writing from, but you are definitely not a Mississippian. I won't enumerate the tells.

11:40, you fumbled in the first sentence. Ignorant Democrats always want to blame the red state their blue state exists in. Democrats are never responsible for their own actions. It’s amazing. Anyway, I’m originally from Menphis. We have a beautiful zoo there that exists in a blue city within a red state and does fine. It’s funded through #1: ATTENDANCE. #FEDERAL grants. Does something prevent the democrat leaders of Jackson from writing federal grants? Weird. #3 is private contributions. Oh, too bad the Democratic /commie vision for Jackson included “eating the rich.” Looks like they were actually good for something. Maybe Madison will build a zoo. #4 is events, again basically contributions from the rich and middle class. In the communist utopia that Jackganistan strives to be, the government has yet to create enough rich city workers to sustain or organize that kind of thing. They’re too busy accepting bribes to buy ugly bags from Maison Weiss!

The blue hair dye has started eating 11:24/40’s brain, you can tell by the everything is racist nonsense.

The state does have a little spare change to help a Zoo.

Let's start with the Hattiesburg Zoo.

" Guessing there are a few black widow spiders around there somewhere "

I think the spiders left a long time ago.

If visiting this "so-called" zoo is on one's to do list ... an updated tetanus shot would be more cost effective.

How naive do you have to be to still have hope that Chuck will "do the right thing" and sell the animals?
I am almost envious of a person that can still have any modicum of hope for such an improbability.
PLEASE point to one example of the Mayor doing the right thing for purely altruistic reasons to offer this grain of hope? Just one.

If you ever visit a wildlife sanctuary that houses animals that were rescued from zoos, you'll never go to a zoo again. I went to a sanctuary outside of Denver and it changed my attitude completely. Large animals aren't meant to be caged.

Anonymous said...

Hey crazy person, Hattiesburg is (barely, in the city limits, at least) majority black, the area in which the zoo is located is now majority black, yet it is thriving, with people of all walks of life enjoying and supporting it. What’s the difference? Can’t always be someone else’s fault. Or more specifically, whitey’s fault. And no it’s not the state’s responsibility. Other people’s money involuntarily and without terms and conditions cannot always be the Democrat solution to everything.

Anonymous said...

Not at all sure how comments about the zoo can be 'racist'. But I do understand the inclination to make that claim.

Anonymous said...

pack a bag travel to Hattiesburg that is how you do a zoo. Question what is better now in Jackson after 8 years of Lil Chok?

Anonymous said...

Income dropped by 50% over the last five years. Tag on inflation dropped it another 30+ per cent. Somebody outside of friends of the mayor needs to do a comprehensive audit and heads need to roll.

city council should be marched in front of the pissing monkey cage every day

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
