Bodycam video shows Jackson police officers repeatedly tasing Keith Murriel until he died. A Hinds County grand jury indicted former officers Kenya McCarty and James Land for second-degree murder and Avery Willis for manslaughter in Murriel's death. McCarty's bodycam video is posted below.
The officers approach Murriel at the Extended Stay Hotel on McDowell Road as he just stood in the parking lot on the evening of January 2. McCarty repeatedly told "boss" to leave but Murriel dumbly remained in place as if he was oblivious to his surroundings. Murriel finally began walking to the street with the police officers in tow. McCarty told Murriel he might get "your ass shot" by one of the residents if he hung around the hotel any longer. She later told a Sergeant who arrived at the scene that the hotel had eight complaints of Murriel harassing people and children were "scared to come out of their rooms."
While the officers watched Murriel walk to McDowell Road, a woman asked if they could move a cruiser so she could leave. McCarty told the unidentified woman she would have to wait unless she wanted "to get into one of these patrol cars." (5:30)
Murriel briefly walked onto McDowell Road but returned to the property in what turned out to be a tragic decision. The police officers took him to the ground and tied to handcuff him. Murriel was face down on the ground. She placed the taser on his back and repeatedly tased him as she commanded him to stop resisting and put his hands behind he is back. A screaming Murriel begged her to stop. Murriel was 6'3" and 285 lbs.
WLBT analyzed the video and reported Murriel was tased 58 times. The officers eventually placed him in handcuffs and placed him in the back of the cruiser. However, it appears none of them checked on his well-being at that point. Paramedics arrived. After a quick examination, a paramedic informed the officers Murriel was deceased.
Some of the video is posted below. The takedown and tasing begins around 6:15. The video of the paramedics arriving or the placement of Murriel in the police car is not included.
JPD fired all three officers.

Who cares.
She needs to be tazed!!!!!!!
There are more than 10 million arrests every year. Some people are going to die from the stress of fighting with cops just like they'd die from the stress of cutting their lawn on a hot day. It's rare but it happens.
The problem is that these politically motivated prosecutions of police officers work BACKWARDS from the fact that someone died to try to impute murderous motivation or disregard to the police officers who were just doing their jobs. The fact is that 99.99% of people would have survived that encounter.
Cops have to be given the benefit of the doubt in cases like this or they'll have to stand aside and let drugged up, 300lb zombies harass people. We're already seeing that across the country.
McCarty should not have had a badge. And that is on this administration.
It's also worth adding that tasers and stun guns have been extensively tested on animals and, spoiler alert, they won't kill an otherwise healthy animal no matter how many times it's zapped.
Police brutality and Jackson’s crime problem have a lot of similarities. When there is no fear of prosecution, criminals and cops both feel emboldened to do as they please. Accountability for police starts with body cameras and prosecutors willing to do the right thing. The gang culture of the thin blue line also has to be stopped.
Women are NOT capable of being on the police force, the fire department or the military. Just another part of the destruction of the USA
They need to quit it with the “mental illness” crap, that seems to be the hot excuse to use for everyone that gets caught breaking the law. Guy is doped up, not following commands, and resisting. He was given a chance to leave numerous times and came back he chose his future. Also, until you have tried to take down a person doped up, doesn’t care/wants to die don’t comment, it takes several people sometimes to get a person down or put handcuffs on a person. She could use some better language though and they’ll have their day in court, I’m curious about the toxicology report.
he killed himself, fucking with them weak ass cops you know they were gonna use excessive force against him
How would you have handled that arrest, armchair cops? Imagine putting cuffs on Andre the Giant.
I don't know why KF said something "wasn't right" with the guy. There must be a LOT of "not right" people out there, because I see the same attitude from folks like this EVERY day! They're convinced they don't have to do anything or follow rules, because (pick a reason.) All he had to do was put his hands behind his back, but he chose not to because (pick a reason.) He was in 100% control of what happened to him. Hands behind your back? Pain stops. No hands behind your back? Pain.
It wasn't like, if he didn't comply, the police would have just left him alone. They gave him about 25 opportunities (or more) to not get tased again. I hate he died, but had I been one of the police there, I would have done the same thing. I'm sorry, but there HAVE to be some personal consequences for people to live in society!
In no situation I've seen in years does FAFO apply more than here
I'm a confirmed believer of the James West, "shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more and then when everybody's dead try to ask a question or two" approach.
3:31 yup
After watching that where do you start? It does start with the mayor. It ends with the citizens. Jackson is lost. Wow.
If you ever catch the eye of a female cop, hope you have a bulletproof vest:

To use official police lingo, those mother fucking stupid ass cops sure fucked up.
@2:50 PM - Kick him in the 'nads. That alone would cure his "mental illness."
He looked guilty of something.
I know why some cops don’t answer calls timely and ride the clock. These fools will try you and you loose you livelihood. Should have called his mama, social worker or the Mayor. Do not put your jobs on the line. Also I don’t do stupid shit like these officers!
Well, I guess I have been to my last dinner at Mayflowers in downtown Jackson.
There are many times each day you don't want to be a cop. This was one of them.
I would have never used the taser! I would have asked him to hold my hand and walked him down the street, then asked him where he lived and took him home!
There has to be a better way to avoid an altercation.
The Mayor and acting Police Chief are fools and will get their officers hurt!
And folks wonder why Missippi is tagged as the dumbest state, but then you read some of these comments and you find out why.
there are some really hateful people on this thread....
see you in church Sunday
@ 12:11...'Who Cares'? I do.
This woman sounds exactly like she is screaming at her four-year-old. And she's gonna switch his ass if he ignores her command! She's in charge and her attitude is 'Somebody gonna git a whuppin'!
The other cop standing around, looking wide-eyed and totally confused. A toothless, yet grinning, 'security guard'.
When a person is assumed to be a disoriented, non-compliant, yet totally passive vagrant, what do you do? You scream at him to move on down the street, tell him to walk out into traffic and head on over to another property? Now that's superior training if I've ever seen it! Regardless of his state of mind, the victim had no idea what he was supposed to do or why.
I'm not the coroner and don't perform autopsies so I don't have any idea what the manner and cause of death of the man might be. But there's no doubt the actions of this woman led to it.
Nor am I a mental health professional. But those who are are mighty disturbed when they see this video. And so are my relatives who HAVE worn and STILL wear a LEO badge.
"There are many times each day you don't want to be a cop. This was one of them."
Wrong! She thoroughly enjoyed it and the power granted by her badge.
All the comments supporting these thug cops - damn, really? How do you think it’s ok to take someone that many times? The comment by the female cop to the person just asking to leave is a good commentary on their power trip mentality. I didn’t watch the video but the WLBT story quoted her as being pissed about Muriel “disrespecting” her. Nothing but low life hood rats themselves.
If three cops can’t handcuff a suspect without using their torture devices they aren’t fit to be cops. 58 times just indicates they are sadistic. They remind me of the group when I was at Hinds who were sadistically messing with a schizophrenic student just to see him get agitated. I took the risk and told them to knock it off. Thankfully they did without jumping me. Bastards ought to have had their asses kicked.
8:11 tell us you haven’t eaten at the Mayflower without telling us you haven’t eaten at the Mayflower.
I wish the cops had a giant bait cast net and just throw it in him. Let him tire out.
How exactly do you expect someone to follow verbal commands while applying a device that disables muscular control? I've been tased and the whole point is that it involuntary disables muscle control. She was using it in what looks like drive stun mode which doesn't get the probe spread a cartridge deployment uses for maximum disruption but a taser should not be used as a pain compliance tool.
8:11, Im sure you used to stop by there after going to Krogers and Walmarts.
Sometimes you are forced to do something you would rather not do. All the man had to do is go somewhere else. He chose not to. When they wanted to handcuff him he didn't want to do that either. How many mistakes can a man make and ex[ect the cops not to force him to obey? Was he drunk, popped up on pills, on some drugs, or just stubborn and dumb? What ever it was he got what he was wanting.
The media coverage of this incident will end today. It lacks the demographic ingredients to have staying power.
This has similarities to the George Floyd incident. Why not protests in the streets and national news coverage?
Sorry folks, this is basically willful disobedience. The moment he demonstrates he he does NOT acknowledge the role and responsibility of a peace officer, is the moment he demonstrates a non-commitment to safe behavior in our community.
Just as a physician examines the BODY for disease, and if cancer cells found - they remove them. A LEO's primary customer is the community at large, and if an individual is seen as a threat to the health of that overall body, it will be removed.
Whether raised by inept parents or listening to media too often, he didn't acknowledge the role of a LEO - and doing so can get yourself killed. It's always been this way.
12:15, they aren’t Gods and if LEO would stop acting like they were Gods maybe people would respond more reasonably. Thank God for body cams.
I'm a white man and am as conservative as they come, and I'm as LEO supportive as any man in town, but goons, rednecks, pecker-heads, malcontented, knuckle-dragging, toothless mumblers like 12:15 and 10:47 have zero business living in civilized society.
I would not be at all surprised to learn their mailing address is a sandbar on the upper Pearl just north of the mountain of Bud-Light cans.
Up until about 1980 "Stop or I'll shoot" actually meant what it said. I nobody batted an eye. Americans have gone soft - and the world knows it.
PIGS!!!
KF... and you wonder why some of your donations have ceased from previous years.. culling certain postings that shouldn't be.
They did everything they could to get him to leave and to get him to comply- that’s pitiful that they lost their jobs due to this guy mentally competent or not not complying in their right mind or no! Who would do what JPD doe-and you have idiots that don’t want help From CC police !
Lord I think the cops should have a raise, maybe they have rough edges but look at what they deal with!!
10:47 and 12:15, exactly! Stupid games = stupid prizes. Prosecuting these officers is nothing but virtue signaling.
@ 8:50 - Neither Kroger nor Wal Mart ends in an 's'. But, then, neither does Mayflower.
Kingfish and others, what do you do when you are trying to put handcuffs on someone and they won’t physically allow you to do so? Serious question.
8:35 - What if you were to read the above posts on effects of being tased and answer your own question?
Being mentally challenged plus losing total muscle control (after being tazed multiple times) renders one unable to comply with an instruction do move his arms.
@8:35 AM - A boot to the 'nads. Instant compliance.
Comply and usually you will live! Just saying!
