Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
On Tuesday November 23, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen claiming that a group of men came by their house wanting to put out pine straw for $7.00 a bale. The men claimed that it would only take a few bales and would be done shortly. When the work was completed, they claimed it took more than 379 bales and that the homeowner owed the men approximately $2600. The homeowner’s mother wrote a check to the men and afterwards, the homeowner called the Sheriff’s Office. The men were discovered at a nearby bank as they were trying to cash the check. Two of the men were arrested and brought to the Rankin County Jail. The case is still under investigation to determine the extent of their activity.
This is a repeat scam that has take place over the last couple of years in Rankin County. These individuals often target elderly or vulnerable people in hopes of cashing in on the scam. If you believe you are a target of such a scam, please call the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office immediately before any further damage can be done.
* Not to be confused with the Wet Bandits.

It would be good to see a photo and names of the criminals please. This is not being reported on the local news
And now we taxpayers have to foot the bill for these pond scum to be supported in the "criminal justice system". Put their worthless asses to work in at least picking up trash in highway ROWs.
Pine straw, pecans, or depends underwear ... any one that takes advantage of the elderly should be dealt with in a special way.
Preferably by the victim's family or friends.
I asked 2 guys to give me a quote on tearing out all my landscaping around my house.
I came home and the landscaping was all torn out and they gave me a bill I never approved.
I pulled out a .357 and advised them to scurry as the law was en route.
They pull this scam quite a bit it seems.
Those guys need to go to prison for 30 years. F them.
Send them to Parchman with bitch tattooed on the foreheads.
To quote a local judge..”You weren’t thinking when you came to Rankin”…
This is more than the elderly getting scammed, and it happens in MadCo as well. I used to be able to fit five humongous bales from Sutherlands in my Tahoe at $10 each before the pandemic. I’m limited these days to the Co Op in the real Canton and contractors. I’ve had quotes from $30 to $200 for three beds. The $30 quote fluffed the existing stand and sprinkled new straw. $7/bale isn’t a bad price, but I would rather find out my sqft and purchase the number of bales needed.
Deal only with brick and mortar garden centers. You get what you pay for.
Another thing to avoid is these guys from Canton who drive around and rake pine straw from any yard (that will allow it), then drive around to sell what they raked...pine cones, trash, leaves, twigs, bugs, dog poo and all. Don't buy that crap (pun intended).
These are the same guys who drive around in an old Pontiac with a chain saw in the trunk and say they'll de-limb your old trees if you'll loan them a ladder.
5:52 - If you want to see photos of these scammers of the elderly, simply Google Joe Namath and JJ DynoMITE.
@3:01
CLAP CLAP CLAP
Yep - 3 guys came through our neighborhood -- in two vehicles -- wanting to do "spot" landscape maintenance for a fee. Just needed to borrow tools, ladders, and a wheel barrow or two. :|
This is Rankin County, i.e. no blessings, so I opine that this is the last straw for them.
Fry em. I would also say the pine straw folks are price gauging the bails for normal folks. It. Ain't. Right.
@7:04 so wait...you hired some guys to do some work, they performed the work and then you didn't pay them and threatened to kill them?
@2:22 PM - you have reading comprehension failure. He asked for a quote and they did the work without authorization. I wouldn't pay them either.
Any speculation as to the mental capacity of the young man who agreed to this work or his mother who wrote that really healthy check?
So...where's the crime?
They discussed a proposal with a resident of the property.
They both claim 'the boy' told them to proceed.
They proceeded.
They wanted their money.
The property owner wrote a check to pay for the completed work.
They went to the bank to cash the check.
The PoPo arrested them.
What the hell for?
Seriously...Where's the crime? Hint: Ripping somebody off on cost is not a crime.
