The Justice Department issued the following statement.
U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca announced today that the City of Jackson Police Department (JPD) received an award totaling $504,310 from the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program.
Nationally, the COPS Hiring Program (CHP) awarded $139 million in new funding to 183 police departments across the nation, including $504,310 to JPD. The funding to JPD is to be used for the hiring of additional officers to fight violent crime in the City of Jackson.
“We are committed to providing police departments with the resources needed to help ensure community safety and build community trust,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “The grants we are announcing today will enable law enforcement agencies across the country to hire more than 1,000 additional officers to support vitally important community oriented policing programs.”
“This award will help the City of Jackson and it’s police department meet the need for additional police officers,” said U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca. “The fight against violent crime in the City does not end here. It is the beginning.”
CHP is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing. CHP provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire additional career law enforcement officers, thereby increasing their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts. Of the 183 agencies awarded grants today, approximately half will use the funding to focus on building legitimacy and trust between law enforcement and communities; 41 agencies will seek to address high rates of gun violence; 21 will focus on other areas of violence; and 19 will focus CHP resources on combating hate and domestic extremism or supporting police-based responses to persons in crisis. The complete list of awards can be found here.
Since its creation in 1994, COPS has invested more than $14 billion to advance community policing, including grants awarded to more than 13,000 state, local and Tribal law enforcement agencies to fund the hiring and redeployment of more than 135,000 officers. CHP, COPS’ flagship program, continues to be in demand today: In FY21, COPS received 590 applications requesting nearly 3,000 law enforcement positions. For FY22, President Biden has requested $537 million for CHP, an increase of $300 million.

The COPS Office is the federal component of the Department of Justice responsible for advancing community policing nationwide. The only Department of Justice agency with policing in its name, the COPS Office was established in 1994 and has been the cornerstone of the nation’s crime fighting strategy with grants, a variety of knowledge resource products, and training and technical assistance. Through the years, the COPS Office has become the go-to organization for law enforcement agencies across the country and continues to listen to the field and provide the resources that are needed to reduce crime and build trust between law enforcement and the communities served.

Doesn't matter how many cops you have if the judges give slaps on the wrist.
Mo money, mo money!
That should solve all the problems.
Didn't Lumumba turn down a prior grant from somewhere because he didn't want to commit to hiring more officers with one-time funding. Or am I wrong?
Don’t let Nancy New know!
She is running around in an ankle bracelet with a Salvation Army bag trying
To suck up more free government money!
If the Mayor would free up the officers guarding him more officers would be free to do other tasks.
That is chump change, and equals roughly 8-12 officers for one year, based on $50,000/officer/year - INCLUDING salary, benefits, patrol car, portable radio, and other safety equipment.
You're not wrong.
What happens when the one-time money is spent? Is Jackson supposed to lay off the officers? Hope for more grants in the future?
If someone gave me $10,000, I wouldn't run out and buy a car, because the future payments aren't covered by that initial $10000. That's just solid budgeting.

Many police departments simply don’t have the expertise or knowledge needed to effectively investigate some types of crime. Supporting local law enforcement with knowledge, training and technical assistance is a terrific use of both the DOJ and our federal tax dollars. However, providing grants to localities across the country for hiring additional police officers is NOT.
That's ten policemen. TEN! Remember Bill Clinton's program of gifting police salaries nationwide. Then when the temporary funding played out, the municipalities had to lay them off.
But, seriously, I believe Jackson could add an additional 437 cops and nothing would change. You whining naysayers know that's a fact.
@5:15PM
Blame the Mayor. It’s always the Mayor’s fault, isn’t it?
Law & Order, clean (or any) water, along with basic street maintenance have never been on Lumumba II's radar.
All the boy Mayor needs to do is hide police reports and babble goofy nonsense to his base. Such strategy will always keep him in some government position.
@6:13, this is that same Bill Clinton program…
Let’s see just how many officer’s are actually hired by Chokwheat. The boy wonder will reallocate those funds for his own protection and to pay off his cronies.
@6:30. Please tell us why the current situation with Jackson is NOT the Mayor's fault. And especially, why is the lack of dealing with crime not the Mayor's fault. Also, why those half dozen officers that surround the Mayor are needed, rather than adding at least one officer per precinct.
We'll wait. I'm sure you are off duty right now, will probably won't hear from you until you get back on the city clock in the morning.
Announcing !!
The Socrates Garrett Police Training Consulting Service !!!!
Giving more money to the same team that can't effectively use what they already have is only throwing good money after bad.

Why, yes. Yes it is. Thank you for the affirmation.
Close the zoo and hire more.
I say put that money to good use and train the existing officers on diversity, equity, and inclusion of criminals.
Every mayor the last 50 years fault. #youarewelcome
8:08 Hilarious! So true!
When a new mayor comes to power, undertakes micromanagement of the police department, replaces the command staff, institutes a no-chase policy, and then the city sets four consecutive per-capita homicide records, then it is appropriate to blame that mayor.
Address the underlying issue with a smattering of common sense -- Jackson is well past the point where any number of law enforcement officers will be unable to stem the tide.
A few generations of locals raised without any form of parental discipline or support; i.e. zero ethics or morals instilled in their psyche/brain/soul (or whatever you subscribe to,) and you end up with a very, very embarrassing American version of lost souls that have approached a level of animalistic behavior that belongs back in the knuckle-dragging portion of human history. Except they all have un-registered guns. Amd they all ain't High Points.
Yay all of us hard working, tax paying citizens.
Pump the brakes and put down your phones, because Jackson is actually ahead of the times...it is a version of the leftist's ideals finally realized.
Folks, hold onto your ass, if you're not already.
Leftenant Graham will partner with Corporal Garrett to train, orient, brief and assign these new troops. Condalula Greens will provide donuts and coffee. This could actually solve the PERS funding problem.
And for his next move, the mayor has hired his sister as a police consultant…just watch where the money goes.
This funding will allow the boy mayor chowke to hire ten more bodyguards and a proper limo.
I bet it ends up in the general fund-
$500,000 = 5 Years of Donuts.
Which same vote-bait is what Lumumba brought bags of to hand out at our last National election, Christ United Methodist Church, Old Canton Road.
Fix anything with enough grease and sugar spread in the right places?
I saw not one single person in a long line accept his bribes.

When the mayor issues edicts to not persue people that shut down the interstate, yes the boy mayor is at fault.
Sad that the first thing anyone thinks of in Jackson is how the money will not be used for its intended use. Sad, but very true. It'll get paid to consultants and campaign donors. Hopefully this is a set up by the feds to allow Jackson to misuse the funds then come and take over. One can only dream.
500 grand should cover M-Bars ummmmmmm runner fees.
To the Dim-O-Krat naysayers who continue to stick their head further in the sand, while praising the high points of Jackson (in their wildest dreams), you know good and well if this type behavior, failing of city services and crime rate were under a "white" mayor, you'd be out in the streets acting like you were in Portland.
You're the reason this state stays "Red", because you've shown what will become of the state under "blue" stupidity...
A capitol city should continue to grow, but thanks to poor leadership you so called progressive vote for, the city's population is fading fast. Look at your election numbers. In a decent run city, the votes he got would only elect a city alderman.
Thanks for being stupid, you continue prove the facts about Jackson everyday on the news broadcast!
This infuriates me. I moved to the suburbs to get away from this irresponsible spending. Now, Joe Biden is giving money (some of which came from me) to Jackson, which says “we are rewarding you for your irresponsible habits.”
$500,000...bribing the taxpayers with their own money.
…and the winner is..11:31!!!

Well, let me backup...It does accomplish a decent living for Kingfish.
