Demario Cotton shot an FBI Special Agent Saturday night as he tried to kill the agent, a JPD officer, and his own brother. FBI agents arrested him yesterday.

The Justice Department charged Cotton with assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon and use of a firearm during a crime of violence. The notice of hearing, affidavit, and complaint were not unsealed until today.
FBI Special Agent Britany Deichman told the story of what allegedly took place on that night of violence in an affidavit (posted below) included as part of a complaint submitted against Cotton in federal court.
A Special Agent assisted a JPD officer with an arrest by Neman Avenue in Jackson as part of the FBI's Operation VGRIP at 10:45 Saturday night. The operation targeted violent gang activity in Jackson. The law enforcement officers heard shots and went to investigate as a SUV sped away from the scene. They turned on the blue lights and gave chase but the vehicle did not stop. The vehicle suddenly paused and Keeunta Cotton jumped out. The driver, his brother Demario, resumed speed. The two officers stopped to help Keeunta. Unfortunately, Demario took attempted to use their virtue to his advantage.
Demario Cottn suddenly stopped, jumped out of the vehicle, and fired at least 26 rounds at the trio with a semi-automatic rifle (likely an AK-47). One of the rounds struck the Special Agent in the back as he pushed Keeunta to the ground. Law enforcement sources said Keeunta probably would have been hit if not for the Special Agent's bravery. They also said the round came within an inch or two of killing the Special Agent.
Keeunta provided his account of what preceded the shooting:
Keeunta Kentrail Cotton agreed to give a voluntary statement at JPD headquarters of the events he witnessed on the night of June 26, 2021. Keeunta Kentrail Cotton ("Keeunta") said he and his brother, Demario Lamar Cotton, left from their mother's birthday party in Jackson, Mississippi in Demario's SUV. Demario Lamar Cotton was driving and Keeunta was the passenger. While driving, Demario Lamar Cotton began acting and driving erratically. While Keeunta attempted to calm Demario Lamar Cotton down, Demario Lamar Cotton took possession of a semi automatic rifle, referred to Keeunta as a "Draco," that was in the vehicle at the time stated, "If police get behind me, I have atmor piercing rounds and will shoot them mother fuckers."
The hoodlum escaped but he was arrested yesterday. He is being held without bond.

I guess his targets were fortunate that he hadn’t practiced as much as Edgar Egbert.
A gun referred to as a “Draco” is typically classified as a pistol under the law, but it fires the round used in the AK-47: 7.62x39. Though the round will be fired at lower velocities since a Draco barrel is generally shorter than the typical AK-47. Almost ANY high velocity rifle round will pierce the soft 3a body armor most LEOs wear, so whether the rifle bullet was “armor piercing” is irrelevant. If the LEOs were wearing body armor plates, likely level 3, there is no 7.62x39 round, “armor piercing” or otherwise, that will go through a level 3 plate. Which tells me the Federal agent either had on soft armor, no armor, or was wearing plate armor but was hit in the location that was not covered.
The thug’s statement about “armor-piercing” rounds is ignorant, much like the thug. He probably got charged the stupid tax on those rounds when (if) he bought them.
Just curious, is it normal to use a photo lineup to identify someone the witness personally knows? Was there some useful purpose served by having Keeunta pick his own brother's photo out of a lineup?
"Driving erratically" probably caused by ingestion of enough drugs at the party to make a fool more crazy than he normally would be. He might have killed his own brother, he was that crazy.
@11:13.
Solid accurate info (which is rarely come across these days when firearms are involved in a crime). Thank you.
Does even 30% of the Jackson residents work from 8am to 5pm and then sleep from 10pm to 6am? If so, that would eliminate 17 hours of potential crime from happening. It just seems like everyone can run up and down the roads all day and night with no care for a job or sleep.
1:25 makes a great point.
I know there are many great jobs that don't involve 8-5 hours but I have wondered the same before.
Work all day, and go to bed at a semi-normal hour. Lots less time for thieving' and whatnot.
@1:25 ... I wonder that all the time. I work in Jackson during the day. I drive all around town. I often wonder why no one is at work. They are all sitting on porches and hanging out at convenience stores drinking and smoking. Must be nice.
2:39 ......and that's why Jacksonians can no longer have nice things.
He shot an FBI agent in the performance of his or her duty while committing at least one crime separate and apart from having whatever firearm he used. Using an (alleged) "AK-47" (which it almost certainly wasn't) or some other civilian version of a military rifle simply adds zest to the prosecution's case. He could have used a single-shot .22 (or .410 - see Robert Earl Keen's "The Road Goes on Forever") and he'd still be up Schitt's Creek without a paddle, prayer, or even a Levy. If shooting local cops is a 10 on the ol' 1 to 10 scale, shooting an FBI agent is waaaaay more than an 11 (see Spinal Tap).
How's that for a post with cultural references?
U never know someone's state of mind or what they going through so don't judge to quickly. Police words and actions aren't always in truth either . People will provoke you ... Incident people are killed everyday it's not fair .. I agree but some people lost family members due to a police shooting them and it was the wrong person they shot . Policies from the police department didn't bring back the inicent person life they took from that family ... Be careful how you judge people . The bible says judge not for ye yet to be judged... I love you Demario Lamar Cotton till the end of time bae it'll never change
This doesn't sound like Demario. With police brutality so high, there is no telling what was going through his mind. Being pulled over by the police may not be scary for some folks but for others, the color of your skin sometimes means a death sentence when being pulled over by the cops.
