Hate it for the guy. I hope it's not too serious and he fully recovers.

Yikes, sending prayers his way.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms are no joke. Makes no sense why this stuff is legal and not weed.

I hate it for the fella. He has a great speaking voice made for radio! Hope he gets it better.

No doubt the Donkeycrat vultures are happy now.

3:51 PM, Amen. I'm not an alcoholic or have any problem with alcohol but I have a PROBLEM with alcohol. It is much more harmful than marijuana and lends itself to abuse at a much higher rate. Sickening that all we see during football is beer ad after beer ad after beer ad. The beer and liquor lobby will fight tooth and nail to keep marijuana illegal as long as possible.

I am sorry for this fellow. I don't know about his medical history or anything else about his personal life. Good thoughts and prayers for him and those dear to him.

Having said that I wonder about the sanity or good will of anybody who seizes upon another person's health crisis to pontificate about the relative merits of alcohol and marijuana.

Winston Churchill was an awful alcoholic. Drank the stuff for breakfast. Was a war hero, a wartime Prime Minister of the UK, and as an aside wrote 43 book-length works in 72 volumes. That's functional. Here's a link: https://winstonchurchill.org/resources/writings-articles-and-books/the-books-of-sir-winston-churchill/

Ole Miss's marijuana guru Mahmoud A. ElSohly has done extensive research on the topic of marijuana's long term effects on its users. Apparently it makes one stupid. Here's a link to several studies:

https://moffittcaspi.trinity.duke.edu/research-topics/cannabis/iq

Here's a link to another source critical of cannabis use:

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/add.12703

Me? I use neither. BUT I'm in my mid-70's and came of age in a culture wherein pot use was ubiquitous. I quit early on when I realized the "fun" of smoking the stuff is that it made me stupid. The people I observed doing the best in this life were not stupid and I wanted to be like them.

Now, looking back I note that the potheads I knew -- almost to a person -- ended up in life's scrapheap, dead or in jail, or just plain sorry. Scientific? No but I remain convinced -- it makes a person stupid. I didn't see much of it in professional school.

The cultures where cannabis is tolerated are in the main African, South Asian, Mexico -- all real toilets in terms of their long term contributions to civilization. Wine, on the other hand, Greece, Rome, France. Beer Germany. Gin the U.K. Where would you rather live? Zimbabwe or Berlin? London? Rome? You pick.

5:39, You must not follow the news. It's because he has widely struggled with alcohol abuse and recently said he was going to get help with his "Demons". Strokes are a common issue in people suffering from alcohol withdrawal among other serious issues. It's pretty easy to put 2 and 2 together and reasonably assume the two issues are likely related. Not sure where you got your list of cannabis tolerated cultures, but it is factually incorrect, i.e. a big fat LIE! Zimbabwe does not have legal weed, but Canada sure does. Where would you rather live? Canada or North Korea?

He thought nothing about endangering thousands of people driving drunk...

@5:39 PM Well said.

5:39 PM, I respect my elders and the stupid things they say

5:39 PM, how are you able to assign entire countries the embodiment of a particular substance? Germany and England since the 50’s has had any drug you could imagine. South Asian countries, sad to say, have more intelligent people per square inch than in our entire country.

I’m scratching my head because I’m trying to think what Nixon 1960 campaign pamphlet or kook TBN documentary you saw that gave you this information. I am sorry that you have access to the computer and am surprised you don’t think the devil lives inside of it.

I love how your proof that alcohol is harmless is Winston Churchill. You may as well say Chris Christie is proof pizza is a vegetable

Why don’t we all stop acting like the leadership (both parties), take a seat, have a drink (and a joint if you prefer), and discuss this like adults? Oh, I forgot, that is not permissible. We are now required to call each other names and refuse to budge off our positions so that our mindless followers will cheer us on for accomplishing absolutely nothing for the greater good. Instead, we constantly pontificate about all the good that we could do if the other side would simply concede and follow us blindly like our base already does.

5:39....although there is an incredible amount of water flowing in and around the Netherlands, it is far from a "real toilet".

I would rather have Sir Winston in charge of my country . . . than say a 'Snoop Dogg' or a 'Cheech & Chong'.

9:08 PM, sorry but your default “run to the middle” answer is not applicable. Frequent alcohol use and dependence is either dangerous or it isn’t. There is no happy medium.

Pizza isn't a vegetable? Oh my.

It seems that the people arguing against marijuana have a hard time coming up with a coherent thought. Who is the one with the impaired brain again? How about compare Winston Churchill to someone has been on record for smoking doobies, which isn’t much but leaves us with Clinton and Obama. I’m assuming Bush 43 and JFK for good measure. Churchill was a good wartime Prime Minister but England grew sick of him fast after the war. His ineptitude gave way to socialism in modern England, but I digress.

Bottom line, the honorable Terry Burton would be much better off today had he never taken a drink or had sought professional help to rid his body of the poison we call alcohol. Perhaps medical marijuana will be a good therapeutic measure for him going forward. Hope he gets better soon.

Burton has been morbidly obese for decades....add alcohol withdrawal and psychological "demons"?.....ripe for fatal risks. Prayers to him and his family....AND to the millions of other poor souls who in the exact same predicament as he has been, and are ticking time bombs.

ROFLMAO. Sure, whatever you say!

Prayers for Terry and his recovery.

6:26 PM, yours is the typical comment I expect to see here. Yes, it is a blessing that no one was harmed. Was pleased that there were so many who understood his illness and wished him well. I don't even know him personally, but know he served our state well for many years. You must be perfect. And you must not know anyone with a problem with drugs or alcohol.

Anonymous said...

God watch over Terry! As for "Winston Churchill was an awful alcoholic", actually my understanding is that he would keep the same glass of scotch going for hours. He drank it very sloooowly.

I did not know that alcohol withdrawal was associated with propensity for stroke, so I learned that. I also learned this blog is full of assholes who celebrate the unfortunate circumstances of others, particularly their serious medical conditions. Well, I didn't really LEARN that. I already knew it but was reminded. So, thanks for that.

The true "unfortunate circumstances of others" are the taxpayers who paid this sick human being's salary for so many years. He does not "represent" the bulk of Mississippians. IF someone has the disease of drug/alcohol addiction, I do not think it wise for him to represent other people in very serious matters. His judgment at best is unsound and compromised. God only knows the background and general character of most of the Mississippi leadership.....perhaps it's why the state is dead last nationally, and on the verge of imploding when the federal dollars dry up. Where in God's name are the men and women of character with good health and judgment? There's not a role model ONE among them....they blow with the wind while partying on the taxpayer's dime.

Please come up with some new material 9:37. You've already barfed up that one here before.

@1:48 Sigh, it doesn't make it any less true.

It is somewhat funny that the people responding negatively on this post are probably the same people that bowed in SENATOR BURTON's presence when he had at least the appearance power. SENATOR BURTON, there is one lesson politicians find hard to accept. That is "When it's over, it's over." I heard there may soon be a vacancy as "head of the state democrat party."

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
