Law gets 8 years in a new law & order room (video)

Eric Law will serve eight years in jail after pleading guilty to one count of sexual battery in Madison County court today.  Judge John Emfinger accepted the prosecution's recommendation that he sentence Mr. Law to a twenty year term and suspend twelve years.  Mr. Law will have to register as a sex offender.  He will face supervised release for five years after his release.

Law is led away
Mr. Law was arrested after an investigation by Rankin and Madison authorities determined he engaged in the act of fellatio twice with a female minor.  The police report stated:

"She advised she had been looking into a case involving juvenile female ***** and 32 year old Eric Law. Investigator Tucker advised she had viewed many Facebook messages between Eric Law and ***** which had been turned over to the Rankin County Sheriff's Department. After reviewing these Facebook messages which indicated the two have had sexual contact, Investigator Sheila Tucker interviewed **** and ***** did confirm she and Eric had been intimate. ..(redacted)... advised these incidents all took place at Eric Law's residence located at Belle Rose Circle, Madison, MS when she had been spending the night with Law. **** **** stated she and Eric would go to the "law and order room" ********** and this is when they would engage in sexual behavior."

An emotional Kristina Law said her husband had learned his lesson and that the sentence was too "harsh".    Attorney Matthew Baldridge represented Mr. Law. He said Mr. Law was a "good person who made a mistake" and he should not be judged by "one mistake".  District Attorney Michael Guest said the "victim could finally get closure."  Mr. Guest said the victim's family supported the decision to recommend an eight year sentence as they did not want to go through a trial.  He said Mr. Law's fate should send a message to others who might think of molesting children.

Earlier post with police report.

Then there is this old WLBT story:

After two weeks on the run, the woman who crashed into WLBT meteorologist Eric Law and his wife is now in custody.

The Laws were relieved to hear the woman who put them both in the hospital is finally behind bars.

"I think it is beyond great. I think it is fabulous," said Christina Law. "She shouldn't have been free to do this to us in the first place. She should have already been in jail. So it is good to know she can't hurt anybody else now."

Police say Carol Dearman crashed into the Laws while driving a stolen jeep. She ran a red light as she was feeling from officers. The accident happened on June, 11th.

Dearman broke her leg and was taken to C.M.M.C. Police say they planned on arresting Dearman when she got out. Instead she was let go, and taken to her sister's home in Crystal Springs. From there, she disappeared.

"Why she was free to just leave the hospital and nobody arrest her right then, I don't understand," said Christina Law.

Family members tell WLBT Dearman went back to Jackson after being released. On Sunday, Police found her in south Jackson trying to steal a car. She was also caught with a stolen weed eater.

"It is my hope that she will be in prison for a long time," said J.P.D. Commander Lee Vance.

The Laws are now recovering from their numerous injuries. They are frustrated officials let Dearman fall through the cracks. They wonder how many criminals go free because the system fails.

"Imagine what they are doing to the people who don't have the media connection, who don't have the popularity," said Eric Law. "I know we have not been treated right."

Before the Laws accident, Dearman had been arrested in Hinds County more than 20 times, but she was never convicted.

While in the hospital the laws say they've received dozens of letters from citizens who hope the Laws' case helps shine a light on the flaws of Hinds County's justice system.

"It would be naive to say something like this would never happen again, but we are going to make sure, whether it is getting new laws or something else, that we get these people off the streets," said Eric Law

Before the Laws' accident, Carol Dearman was involved in a chase in Copiah County.

When she got out of the hospital and was at a family member's house in Crystal Springs, Copiah County authorities served her with a felony evasion and malicious mischief indictment. She got away before they could arrest her.

Back story here is Mr. Law backstabbed the D.A's office when he was the victim. He agreed to a plea bargain than started raising hell in the courtroom when Judge Yerger asked if he was satisfied with the agreement. Told the Judge he wanted the maximum sentence imposed on the defendant. This was after he agreed to a 20 year sentence. He urged Judge Yerger to impose the maximum 40 year sentence. Judge Yerger ignored him and stuck to the original recommendation.

How come when Mr. Guest prosecutes female molesters they get probation?

First I'm not blaming the young girl, but has anyone looked into her. We all have seen girls as young as 12 dressing, with makeup on, looking like a 20 year old. We also know of young girls who lead men to believe they are older. It is possible this is case here. Also she knew what they were doing was illegal so why wasn't she also charged. Before anyone says anything, yes I do have a daughter and no I did not allow her to dress above her age. Still today she looks like a 17 year old when in fact she is in her late 30s. Unless it is forceable rape, sex is a 2 way street.

I agree with Tanya--Guest barely shakes his finger at females that have committed the same acts against teenage boys.

I can think of at least two cases in Rankin County where some teachers got a slap on the wrist.

4:51-why do you sympathize with a child molester? he deserves every day of 20 yrs. he got off easy!

Why was she spending the night at his house?

@6:23 - because not everybody agrees that 17 year olds are children or that they are being molested when they decide for themselves to participate in and even initiate sexual activity. They are becoming sexually active at 12 & 13 years old. When somebody has been sexually active for 2, 3, 4 or 5 years, what difference in the world does it make if is 5 years older or 10 years older or 30 years older???? And WHAT about that scenario automatically makes the older partner a predator??? Get your head out of the sand an look around. These are NOT babies and nobody is stealing their childhood innocence from them. They GAVE that away, eagerly, YEARS ago.

I rarely have sympathy for perpetrators in these cases, but eight years seems incredibly disproportionate for receiving oral sex a couple of times from a 17-year old. Add to that the instances of female teachers having full-on, total penetration with male students (16 and younger, if I recall) and getting slaps on their wrists, and it's obvious that Guest has a bias in how he prosecutes these cases. POS.

Anonymous said...

Oops. Make that a 15-year old. Still, the point remains: Guest prosecutes receiving oral sex twice harder than he goes after teachers who take full penetration from their students.

you left out "their students who brag about it"

Temptation resisted is a true measure of CHARACTER. I believe if they both, did something in the Law and Order room only once and months later the same investigation takes place and investigators find this out and build their case, on a one time only, meeting. This would not show a pattern and then, only one mistake, instead of many.....his sentence would not be as severe.

7:41. this is 623 again. On what planet is it OK for a 30 something man to have sexual relations with any female under 18? Or a 30 something woman with a male under 18? In both cases the 30 yr old is a sexual predator. It matters not how the younger person acted, dressed, their sexual past with those their own age, or whatever- a moral adult knows not to have intercourse with a teenager. Period. End of story.

I think consentual sex in the state of Mississippi is 16 unless you are in a position of authority

Anonymous said...

Yes, they do brag about it.

9:27 If all the preachers, lawyers, and teachers were prosecuted that committed such crimes, there wouldn't be enough jail cells to hold them all.

Anonymous said...

So some of you actually believe that a 30 year old male can't have any will power or self control in the face of sexual overtures by a teenager?

If your sexual urges are out of control when you see a girl in sexy clothes, something is wrong with you.

So , do you also think women should wear burkas so as not to put men at risk?

If this is true for you, please get counseling immediately!

Did he suffer a TBI after the car wreck?

The reason Guest doesnt charge a 15 year old for being statutorily raped is because he cannot do so by law. The statute is intended to protect a certain catagory of people, here minors. The protected class of a statute are immune from prosecution.

If you want to go back to 14 being the age of consent, call your legislator...probably a pretty hard sell.

The better sell is mandatory sentencing guidelines regardless of gender.

@9:27- please explain what miracle of nature occurs at the stroke of midnight on a person's 18th birthday that transforms him or her from an innocent child into a full grown adult. And explain why you are so sure that miracle could not possibly occur at any other time. The answer, of course, is that no such transformation occurs. Every person on this earth matures at his own pace. There are 17 year olds who are both intellectually and emotionally more mature than some 30 year olds. The age of 18 is nothing more than an arbitrary number selected by a small handful of legislators because it sounded like a good number. They could have just as easily chosen 17, or 21...or 12. It's just a number, Jack. Just a number. Take a look backward about 50 years and you'll discover that your grandmother or great grandmother was married with 2 or 3 babies by the time she was 18. Just a number pulled out of a hat. Says NOTHING about a person's maturity.

Did Mr. Law go straight to Jail OR...Does he report at a later date?

Kingfish said...

Why don't you look at the picture?

Anonymous said...

10:24 Possibly true, totally irrelevant. The law is the law. Obey it or face the consequences.

You don't like the law - change it. Or STFU and quit annoying the reasonable people.

10:24 am please read more about human development particularly brain development.
Most of us humans have brains that are still developing until age 25.
Also please note that your grandmother and great grandmother didn't live as long and women died in childbirth at an alarming rate.
Please look at marriage statistics and see how many of those teen romances last now that getting a divorce is not easy.
And, those of you who think modest dress will protect your daughters from predators are naïve beyond belief! Is modest dress and no makeup protecting those young girls in polygamist cults????
Really people, try to learn something about sexuality in humans!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
