Geoff Pender and Michael Newsom write in the Sun-Herald Tate Reeves is waaaay out in front of Billy Hewes:
"A Fabrizio McLaughlin & Associates poll of likely GOP primary voters shows State Treasurer Tate Reeves with a substantial lead over state Sen. Billy Hewes III, R-Gulfport, but with many undecided voters.
Reeves carried 51 percent, Hewes 18 percent and 31 percent were undecided. A media market breakdown shows Reeves with large leads in Jackson (70-9), Hattiesburg (64-9), Tupelo (55-10), but Hewes leading in Biloxi-Gulfport (46-18). The numbers are likely heavily based on name recognition, with 78 percent having no opinion or having never heard of Hewes.
The Hewes camp says these numbers are very preliminary, based solely on name recognition, and likely to change as campaign advertising begins in earnest. But Reeves is the most well-financed candidate in the state right now."Article

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07
Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

I've seen quite a few of Reeve's commercials and I'm really curious what he's talking about when he talks about Mississippi's "debt." I know the term debt when used in respect to federal budget concerns the deficit and what not, but the Mississippi Constitution requires us, as a State, to have a balanced budget, ergo no "debt" in the Federal govt. sense of the word. Any clue what he's getting at? Is there he calling something else debt? Or is he just latching onto the arguments and worries about Federal debt in order to score some political points on a state level?
bonds.
works for me.
I want Billy to win, but it looks like he is going to get beat bad. Reeves just has too much money.
Have they polled Ocean Springs?
Ouch. With numbers like that there is only one way to go.....negative.
Get ready for Billy to sling all the mud he can find.
9:40 Unfortunately for Tate, there is plenty of mud to be slung.
10:05 And there is plenty of mud for Tate to sling the other way....
The only real duty of the Lt Governor is to preside over the Senate. In that regard, Billy has a wealth of experience and dough boy has zero. Just what is it that Reeves has ever done for a living?
I can't get excited about Phil or Tate. To be fair, I'm not excited about Dave Dennis or Billy either.
It's a pretty uninspiring group if you aren't a homer for one of these guys. And don't get me started on the Democrats.
Of course, that means there's an opportunity for a charismatic Speaker to come in and seize the political spotlight. And that's a dangerous thought.
I haven't found anyone unaffiliated with a campaign who is excited about any of these guys. No one longs for a Bryant/Reeves result, though we all seem resigned to the fact that it is inevitable. And we've had 4 years to think about it. I'm not interested in just voting against Democrats, but I guess that's what November will be about.
And no, I'm not advocating for a third party, or protest votes, or anything like that. Just give me better candidates.
Rant over. That feels better.
Bill, your logic is the same question many asked in the last LG race, but logic was out the window...
11:20, I think you, myself and MANY others feel the same way...
10:05 And there is plenty of mud for Tate to sling the other way....
It is more likely that Tater will be throwing double cheeseburgers and chili cheese dogs since so many of them seem to be at his ready disposal.
I guess all those people who have Tate Reeves signs on their properties are not excited about Tate, but feel sorry for him.
Works for me.
Two foreclosed (and empty) homes on my NEJax street have Reeves signs on their front lawns.
Hope that works for you too!
We don't have many (or any) "good" candidates anymore because fitness to lead as a consideration went out the window AGES ago.
The parties, for the most part, guide who will be in the right place to make a run. When they do end up with an actual primary race, establishment support usually lines up behind the one who they believe they can get the most use out of. Note that I didn't say who they thought would be the better public servant.
People who value privacy for themselves and their families are going to stay FAR away from campaigns. The few who are still ruled by idealism and who actually get elected something learn the rules quickly -- the people didn't hire you, the money did.
Public service used to be a noble calling, now it's a means to an end. Political science departments produce future lawyers who hope years of party sycophancy will earn them a spot on some ballot somewhere. People who want to serve in non-elected positions get bitched at in newspapers and radio shows as being lazy, stupid, and "living off the taxpayers," on top of not getting paid THAT WELL.
Today, the REAL public servants of America are conducting their work in non-profits. And those people are staying as far away as possible from elective politics.
Finally, consider the ego a person has to have to be willing to run for something -- THOSE are the people who we want leading us?
11:20, well said. Don't like Bryant/Reeves, don't know the other two. This coming from a Rankin County homer, which is probably why I don't like Bryant/Reeves.
I kind of feel like when Reagan was term-limited from running again. I really don't want Haley to go, he's been a great governor. Bryant will never be able to fill his shoes. And Tate, well, he won't have very high expectations to live up to, judging by his predecessor's performance.
Tate just strikes me as a political climber. In 8 years will we see his campaign for governor? Or even senator? Those types of politicians unsettle me. He's in it for Tate, not to serve the public.
@11:50 -- I suppose they could be excited about him or they could feel sorry for him, as you propose. A third possibility is that they feel compelled to feign support or excitement in order to gain favor if/when he is elected. You wouldn't want the Lt. Gov. (current or future) to think you aren't on his team, now would you? And, yes, I can tell you that I've seen people write checks to campaigns that they grumble about supporting. Even/especially this year.
Best,
11:20
Why must we continue to elect full time politicians simply because we recognize their names because they are - "full time politicians"?
That is the worst action we can take. Dave Dennis would be a Governor like Haley (very good). Billy can run the legislature . He has no name reconiton (outside the Coast) because he has worked sensibly as a legislator. He is not a full time state wide pol.If Dennis and Hewes are THAT far behind - Mississippi we have a problem. Think hard about it.
Tate Reeves has proven himself as a great fiscal conservative as State Treasurer. He cutted spending, changed borrowing practices, and protected the taxpayers' money. He possessed the values and beliefs of a strong conservative. He wants to move Mississippi forward in a new and vibrant way. He has done a tremendous job as State Treasurer and I believe he will do an even better job as Lieutenant Governor. I believe in you Tate Reeves!
With poll numbers like these, you can bet the mud is about to be slinging from Hewes camp
Fredrick,
I have a couple questions for you. I don't really care to get in the comment debate club but, have you read your post?
"cutted spending"... nevermind the gramatical error. Do you realize who is responsible for spending in this state? The Legislature, not the Treasurer.
"changed borrowing practices"... what?
"protected the taxpayers' money"... like guarded it with a gun?
"He possessed the values and beliefs of a strong conservative."... I hope he still does.
"He wants to move Mississippi forward in a new and vibrant way."... Who doesn't?
Look, I firmly believe Tate will be our next Lt Gov., but it looks like you drank the koolaid.
Fredrick forgot to add that Tate wants every household to eat more cheeseburgers and pizza.
9:34...... Nice articulate argument
