JFP editorial: Conservatives should go to the back of the bus. Got it, Quentin?

I can't resist. ;-) I see this editorial in the Jackson Free Press and it screams "Kingfish, have some fun." Sooooo.... I'll give in to temptation, deliver myself into some literary evil, and dissect this one.

The Jackson Free Press’ readership is diverse in many ways, and we get criticized from the left and right for editorial stances and endorsements. Our editorial board believes in groups of people with varying opinions getting together to debate and discuss and, thus, find a better solution due to diversity of opinion.
For that reason, we rather like the idea of a City Council with varying viewpoints, much as we like the fact that President Obama has shown a willingness to compromise and reach out to the business community.

Nothing wrong with this part. The obligatory "we are open-minded" and "welcome diversity of opinions" claptrap. Otherwise known as the smile given to the victim while the dagger is sharpened. Sure enough, here it comes:

To that end, we wish we could feel more comfortable with the thought of well-funded Republican Quentin Whitwell taking over Jeff Weill’s Council seat in the special election on Feb. 15. We wish we believed he would partake in a healthy dialogue with other Council members and vote independently from what his funders might want, should the situation merit it. We’d like to think he would think for himself more than Weill, who seemed to treat the seat as a Republican stepping stone to higher office, and take often-not-well-considered positions just because they were against the mayor.

Well funded? Would they feel comfortable if Patricia Ice was well-funded? Did they complain about Barack Obama shattering all fundraising records? Is there any reason why they should not believe he would engage in a "healthy dialogue" with the rest of the City Council? What exactly should he do when they try to refinance bonds that will bankrupt the city while enriching disgraced bond pimp Porter Bingham? Should he kiss their ass when they try to hike wages while the city is broke? When exactly has Mr. Whitwell shown in his career he does not engage in healthy dialogue with other parties? That is the essence of a good lobbyist you know, not that one should expect them to know anything about politics. A top lobbyist such as Clifford Thompson or Clare Hester is good at listening to and negotiating with the other side.

As for the comments about Weill, that is just plain hackery. Weill was the only one raising hell about the Fuelman cards. He was the ONLY one who tried to stop that $97 million interest rate swap Rick Hill, SORE, and George Smith's nephew tried to cram down our throats while paying out $4 million in fees (The JFP said nothing about this.) He was the only one that tried to have some accountability on the claims docket whether it was Frank or Harvey. Yet he treated it as a stepping stone. Right. He was about the only one on that council that asked any real questions about the budget. Yes, he screwed up sometimes (Millsaps study) but he was the only one on that city council trying to hold city government accountable for its actions.

Then there is the next paragraph:
But Whitwell has a huge warning sign hanging over his head: his own resume. He is a tried-and-true corporate-conservative lobbyist—with clients from United Healthcare to U.S. Smokeless Tobacco to Ashbritt (Google it with “Katrina” and “Barbour”). His firm has lobbied the state Legislature on behalf of a national charter-school group (we understand discussing them, but lobbying is something else) and for power companies such as Entergy that want customers to pay now for possible nuclear and coal plant construction in the future.

Oh my gosh. He's a lobbyist. HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!! OHMYGOSH OHMYGOSH!!! MASHED POTATOES!!! CRANBERRIES!!! GRAVY!!! SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!! Wait a second, you mean a lobbyist is like a lawyer and represents these things called clients? You mean that is where you get paid to represent someone? What happened to the JFP's position of defending lawyers who represent murderers? Protestors? Illegal immigrants. Oh, I get it, only some people deserve legal representation in the criminal justice system or in dealings with the government. Bill Chandler and his wife are fine folks because they represent illegal immigrants and the poor but Mr. Whitwell should be penalized for doing what his clients pay him to do. Got it. It might be news to her but a lobbyist is acting on behalf of his paying client's interest. That does not mean he agrees with their interests or viewpoint. Just because Haley represented a chinese company once does not mean he is a communist. Beth Clay is a known Democrat. Think she agrees with all those Republican-type clients she has? Of course not. She is doing her job as a lobbyist in representing them. Doesn't matter. He's a lobbyist who represents corporations. Never mind he might bring a private-sector or business-oriented viewpoint to the council, he's the enemy.

Better yet, he represents conservative causes such as charter schools. Damn. Can't have that, can we? So does that mean the JFP actually opposes charter schools? What was that the editorial stated earlier about "varying viewpoints"? Careful, your slip is showing, JFP. The truth is, the JFP does not want a diversity of idea on the Jackson City Council. Even if one accepts the editorial's arguments at face value, Mr. Whitwell will be opposed by a Mayor and probably four or five city council members with completely opposing views on most issues. The "progessive" weekly only wants council members that think the same way, vote the same way, and above all else, give Harvey what he wants every time on demand. Make no mistake folks, the smile is off and the dagger is out. Mr. Whitwell is a scumbag lobbyist who doesn't do honest work and defends conservatives as well as corporations. Can't have that ANYWHERE near the City Council. However, the JFP is just getting warmed up:

We’re also concerned about his not-subtle ties with “Two Lakes” supporters; the spokesman for that project, Dallas Quinn, is his campaign manager; vocal “Two Lakes” supporter Ben Allen is his treasurer. The Ward 1 council member should look carefully at all flood-control options—and look out for constituents who are concerned about higher property taxes to pay for expensive development, not to mention the use of eminent domain to take property. This is a complicated issue that deserves more than a lobbyist’s approach to it.

TWOLAKESTWOLAKESTWOLAKES!!! The world is gonna end!!!! Its 2012!!! Frank Melton is back from the dead!!!!! HEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!! Guess what, most of NE Jackson supports Two Lakes. Most of NE Jackson damn sure doesn't want a levees-only plan that adds six to ten feet of heigh to levees and condemns over THIRTY businesses on Lakeland Drive. The argument about higher property taxes is a flat-out lie. The only way property taxes will be higher is if the Two Lakes plan is implemented. You know what that means? The taxes are higher because.......drum roll.......the land is WORTH MORE MONEY. While families suffer nationwide from declining real estate prices, the editorial complains about something that might actually increase real estate values for the same NEJammers it bashed for years. By the way, how come the JFP never says a word about the property taxes in Jackson being twice that of surrounding cities? Where is the concern for property taxes for Jacksonians, who on average make less money than those in those same communities, who pay twice as much? How come there is no defense of those business owners who will lose their land to a levee plan and are now unable to sell their property (No one will buy it because it will be condemned!) Oh yeah, those are evil corporations. They don't count. Doesn't matter. The same people who backed Melton support Two Lakes. They are evil and deserve no voice whatsoever in government.

Besides, we are dismayed to see Whitwell marching out the same tired Morgan-Quitno “dangerous city” rhetoric of failed local candidates to try to scare people into voting for him. This is a very bad omen.

Got news for ya, JFP. Jackson DOES have a crime problem. Maybe if you start raising hell about Harvey no longer publishing crime stats since November (unless asked by JJ) as you did when Frank did the same thing, we might take you seriously. JJ agrees with you about the MQ study (and posted very critical articles about them several months ago).
That guy in New York said "The rent is too damn high" well guess what? The crime is too damn high. Notice how the people at the JFP shrugging off crime are usually single people or have no kids. Different story when you have a wife and kids to worry about or are a single mom. The same single moms the JFP defends on domestic violence suddenly don't matter as much when it comes to discussing crime in Jackson. There is a reason the middle and upper income blacks are moving out of Jackson and if you've noticed, they aren't exactly griping about the tough on crime policies pursued by neighboring cities. They can call crime a luxury tax for living in Jackson all they want but crime is a huge problem. Of course, this editorial is printed by a "paper" whose editor thought crime under Dinkins in NYC was no big deal.

As for opponent Patricia Ice: We know her as a person, an advocate for the less fortunate and an immigrants-rights attorney. She is a smart family woman, and she cares about the residents of Jackson. We believe she will think independently, but with an ear toward the rights of people over corporations. We’re glad she decided to run, and we believe she would represent the people of Ward 1, and the entire city, better than her opponent.

Please turn out and vote for Ice on Feb. 15.

That says it all. Everyone on the council needs to look alike, think alike, and agree with us or else we will trash you in our editorials. Ignored by the JFP is the disturbing fact there is probably no one on the city council who knows how to read a balance sheet, understands what it takes to run a business, or has any experience in private economic development. The editorial makes no mention of Ms. Ice's resume while devoting most of its space to Mr. Whitewell's. Not one word about Ms. Ice's qualifications is made or what she brings to the table. Just "she is a good person" and "she agrees with us". Funny, I thought endorsements were just that, endorsements and not character assassinations but such is typical for the Jackson Free Press.

This post is not part of any paid advertising by the Whitwell campaign. It is simply an editorial opinion provided by Kingfish.

About what I expect from them. Of course they'd like Ice, nevermind she'd never represent Ward 1. Which is I think their goal: isolate Ward 1 and those evil conservatives from power and continue to ruin Jackson.

At this juncture most folks realize that raging hypocrisy that is Ladd+Stauffer.

But this point that you bring up about the unpublished crime stats serves as one of the most clear reminders to all as to the sheer depths of bad faith vendetta journalism that they practice.

Why doesn't she mention that Quentin is ALSO a family oriented person....is it because he is a white male that makes him not the ideal candidate? If Ice was white would she be a target of Donna's bs tyrade as well? Does Donna even LIVE in NE Jackson?
Yes his campaign is well funded...DUH! Alot of people support him, back him, and believe in him. Makes no difference what his skin color is. Why does everything have to be a white/black issue?
Donna...just because you come from a white trash Neshoba upbringing doesn't mean ALL white people are bad. Quit making this about race...when it should be about the candidate. You make a mockery of yourself...We need someone in this position who is going to do something for this city...Why is there zero mention about Ice's background? Other than she is an immigrants rights attorney? I am glad she works with the underprivileged...that is honorary of her (and I am not being condescending...anyone who does something for someone other than theirself holds high merit in my book) BUT I want someone who is going to try and do something with Jackson...we desperately need it. The crime here is out of control. I agree with Donna on the domestic violence issues but that is it. There are far more crimes than just dv. There are rapes and muggings, burglaries, assault...every 10 minutes something is going on in Jackson. Sorry if I worry about crime just a little more than the rights of immigrants.

An interesting aside, Ice supported the Melton campaign and was an employee of SORE at the City Attorney's office for a few months. But now the JFP supports her? Yes, it's because she's not Whitwell . . . as Kingfish discusses.

As endorsements go, were I Ice, I'd think " with friends like this , who needs enemies?"

But, I'm not buying your lobbyist analogies particularly about likening the right to defend oneself against criminal charges to hiring professionals to lobby legislatures on behalf of corporations. But, then I think seeing a corporation the same as a citizen is the worst ruling the Supremes have ever made though the imminent domain decision was damn close.

I also think Twin Lakes could be a big plus for Jackson in the long run and dovetails nicely with current improvement efforts.

I don't like that Quinn is a lobbyist. I have misgivings about Ice as well. I'm less than thrilled with either candidate this five minutes but applaud both for being willing to run at all when they can be certain of being trashed.

Ice lives about as remotely from 95% of Ward 1's population as one can get. Our regular UPS driver knows more about my neighborhood than Ice can possibly understand.

It makes about as much sense as having Maggie BS represent the Daniel Lake area.

Don't forget who drew those Jackson ward maps after the last census. It was none other than Derrick 'I Charge Double' Johnson.

Ice took some of Donna's writing classes...so they are friends. THAT makes her a better candidate. Donna knows her personally and likes her. THAT makes her a better candidate. Ice fights for the poor...THAT makes her a better candidate. Quentin is a lobbyist. He should burn at the stake for that.
Has JFP endorsed anything for Ice? Have they advertised anything for her? Have they helped in any way to contribute to her campaign?
Donna is a joke. The JFP is a joke...nothing more than a glorified highschool newspaper with as much credibility and merit as the latest issue of "High Times"...

Just a few quick thoughts.

Does being in this echo
chamber all the time cause hearing problems? Like being deaf to anyone who disagrees with you?

To the poster who, if I understand correctly, took/stole/appropriated
all of the JFP copies from Cups:
what a patriotic, American thing to do. I'm sure the founding fathers would have been so proud of you.

If I didn't know better, you being an upright conservative and such, I'd almost wonder if you had a touch of the communist in you, muffling the press and restricting other points of view.

(Sarcasm intended, not sure of the level of intelligence of most of this group)

But don't let me interrupt. I wouldn't want anyone to get disoriented by hearing another point of view.

By the way, can anyone tell me, after they are done telling me why Whitwell is the "victim" of the big bad JFP endorsement, why I or anyone should vote for him?

And how being a former, current and future lobbyist might not cause some pretty serious conflicts of interest, like putting his clients interests ahead of his constituents interest?

I won't hold my breath for an answer.

Whoever wins tomorrow, I will respect and abide by the wishes of the voters. Can you all say the same?

Kingfish said...

Obviously I don't condone doing that to JFP issues. Keep it classy, guys.

You raise some good questions. The point of the most is not to say Mr. Whitwell is a victim, he's a big boy after all and can take care of himself, but to deal with an endorsement that when you actually read it, is filled with logical fallacies, half-truths, and is not an endorsement but more of a character assassination. I wouldn't know after reading that editorial why I should vote for Ms. Ice. Think I'm being harsh? I learned more reasons about why I should vote for Ms. Ice from the Cl story this morning than that so-called endorsement.

Anyyimiss,

What thoughtful dribble you bring to this echo chamber, I can almost hear the reverberation of literal crap missing the intended target and hitting the commode (AKA toilet for your feeble mind).

I laughed quite heartily upon hearing about the Bugle finding its way to the proper receptacle (AKA trash can - just in case this too is above your vocabulary).

Go Whitwell. Ice appears a contrivance after reading DK's anti-Whitwell editorial. Perhaps you should bring your comment above and critique it in your next class.

Funny anyyimiss that you fancy some type of connection between the symbolism of Robin's Thinker and your own balderdash.

There is exponentially more tolerance here in the JJ 'echo chamber' for disagreement and difference of opinion than you'll ever find at the JFP. Over there your artificial lecture wouldn't have made it past Ladd's moderation.

The single-most honest line Ladd wrote about Ice was in the comments:

In this pairing, as a result, Patricia Ice came out as far the preferably (sic) candidate of the two. That might not have been the case for us had she had a different opponent.

In other words, there's not much good that we can say about Ice other than a few vague claims like being a "family woman" and she'll "fight for the poor", and we're certainly not going to discuss her qualifications (or lack thereof). But we sure do hate that Whitwell guy and his conservative politics (I mean, we're diverse, but not that diverse), so we're pretty much stuck with endorsing Ice.

Rebekah said...

Mark you summed it up perfectly....

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure that anyone who wants to represent Jax can at the same time oppose two lakes. Either the tax base grows or the milage rate continues up. I'm not sure of Ice's position on that. Honestly, I had some contact on an issue of getting legal status for a person who was deserving of it, but did not have it at the time. Ice was obviously a "Liberal," but so what; she was very helpful and professional and didn't seem to have the idiocy factor of Lumumba or Stokes. However, I don't why being lawyer with a expertise in immigration law qualifies one to be a city councilperson.

Does she have a "two lakes" position?

Anonymous said...

Don't count on Whitwells intellect to save the day...he can't read a balance sheet and is, I'm afraid, quite unable to reason and use logic. I'm not happy to report that...he's nice...just stupid. With that said...why does anyone read JFP anyway?

And Two Lakes? That POS plan has about as much chance of coming to fruition as Donna Ladd has at opining about a white republican candidate in a fair and objective manner....

KaptKangaroo said...

Fine comment Mark.

2:11 - From what I've heard (from frineds that I trust)Quentin is a very motivated and intelligent young man. He obviously knows how to read a balance sheet (since he has owned his own business for years) and his knowledge as an attorney and lobbyist would appear to be a much-needed addition to the council.
I've also noticed that you don't give any examples of why Quentin is "Stupid" which makes your comment just that, Stupid.
And as far as Two Lakes goes… Donna, are you really posting on JJ again? Come on, don’t you have your own blog?

Anonymous said...

And Two Lakes? That POS plan has about as much chance of coming to fruition as Donna Ladd has at opining about a white republican candidate in a fair and objective manner....

Tell you what Sparky. Levees will never get built. There simply isn't enough wealth in the tax base to pay for them. A vote to pay for them will never pass at the ballot box. Levees destroy wealth. You'll get the same bang from an investment in levees as you would if you put your paper dollars through a shredder. POOF. Money gone.

AND when that next flood hits half or more of the homes in flood plain neighborhoods like Brooks Estates and Canton Avenue Estates and around McLeod will NEVER get rebuilt. NEVER. Because those folks don't have flood insurance and some not even homeowner's insurance.

Them is the dirty little secrets the wealth redistributing regressive egotists at the Bugle never print. So say all you want about Two Lakes. It is the ONLY plan with a hope in Hades of self-funding. And when the next flood hits watch Harvey, Donna, Todd, Pleas McNeel and the rest of the numbskulls bid THOUSANDS of additional taxpayers -- in one of the few places (Ward 1) still generating taxes for Jackson -- goodbye as they leave the city to never return.

Idiot.

Then Ladd banned me and most anyone else who pointed out how silly her arguments/rantings are. I can;t imagine why anyone of any political stripe would take her seriously. There are plenty of very intelligent and charismatic progressives/"liberals" who are very formidable debaters/thinkers. Ladd is not one of them. Giving her money to teach you how to write is like giving Elton John money to teach you how to be heterosexual.

Also, Quentin is a fine man, and has nothing to be ashamed of that he's lobbied and done so successfully. He is a good leader and will be primed to step into a higher leadership role after his time on the council is over, but will be more grey up top and be beating his head against the wall after every dealing with the jackasses in that city circus. He'll put up a good fight but in the end need more majority to do the hard work and get momentum going in the right direction.

Number Two: Donna & Todd have zero editorial control over the JFP .

Number Three : Why is Babs Blackmon so scared of Whitwell at the last minute ?

Regardless of the Whitwell shortcomings you note it simply doesn't matter. Because the job as Councilperson for Ward 1 is as powerless a political job as you'll find in Mississippi because they can't get anything done EXCEPT agree to increase taxes.

It is a figurehead job only and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Whitwell's only motive is to use the job to springboard to another elected position.

Reno, Allen, Weill ... they ALL did nothing to stop the milking of the Ward 1 cash cow because they couldn't produce a majority. The infrastructure of the ward is a shambles of what it was only a short 10 years ago. Go back two decades and you'd be hard pressed to convince anyone it was even the same place.

So rest easy from your heartburn for Whitwell because he can't screw the ward up any worse than it is already screwed up.

Anonymous said...

9:12 that brings up the inevitable point (running in another thread here) - why would any productive, taxpaying person or family stay in Ward 1 or Jackson in general? It's not going to turn around with the current governing class.

NE Jackson is no longer automatic for conservatives nor Republicans. I don't believe he will but should Whitwell lose today it will be because he has run a lukewarm campaign overly reliant on paid media. All 3 times Weill has put his name up for consideration his campaign had live warm bodies knocking on my door and calling my phone. Weill campaigns excelled at getting out the vote. Whitwell has been invisible. Roger Davis was also. That is why we have an empty suit like Robert Graham in office.

Looks like the regulars at the Gannett blog linked above got real tired of Donna anonymously droning on and on like she does with her VIP hate.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
