Schimmel's Update

More problems face Schimmels as Blue Cross filed a motion to compel payment of $3,843 in health insurance premiums on September 16, 2009. Blue Cross claims they entered into an agreement with Schimmels to provide health insurance after the filing of the bankruptcy petition. Copy of motion

The Mississippi State Tax Commission also filed on September 15, 2009 before a Response to Debtor's Objection to the Mississippi State Tax Commission's Claim. The MSTC stated "The Mississippi State Tax Commission filed a secured claim in the amount of $33,344.85, a priority claim in the amount of $52,307.10 and a general unsecured claim in the amount of $20,856.97 for withholding, sales and special city/county taxes. Please see a copy of the MSTC’s Proof of Claim filed herein as claim no. 6 on the Claims Register." The Commission states Schimmels has been making late tax payments since 2005 and is subject to a 50% penalty on late payments. Copy of Response
Clearly Schimmels is still in trouble. Hopefully the changes Mr. Schimmel is making to the restaurant will spark a rebound in its fortunes as it should be a real jewel in Fondren.

Must not be enough new urbanists to support all the service industry they say we need.

Oh, there is something that would work there and something he would probably be perfect at. I've thought about sending him an email but figured unsoliticed unexpert know it all opinions probably aren't welcome. ;-)

Just think, once Jay Schimmel finally runs his business into the proverbial shitter, a new set of investors can come in and make a great place out of the old location.

He's a....how do I say this nicely...jerk. It's not the location it's just another poorly run business. Jeff Good and Dan Blumenthal prove my point perfectly with a full parking lot every day and night at Sal & Mookies...one street over. Jay's arrogance has caught up with him. It's a shame for sure.

I was going to show some love and eat there a couple of Saturday nights ago, but there were only two cars in the parking lot. ..Being one of maybe 5 diners in a restaurant would really bum me out ambiance-wise. So I kept driving. (Sorry!) I may attempt again though, I hate to see a business scratchin and survivin'. ('Good Times' reference)

Sal & Mookies is good food but way overpriced.

Agree with 1:22. GREAT food. Too EXPENSIVE.

The arrogance of Dan and Mr. Pom Poms-Jeff Good to price a friggin pizza pie at 28 bucks is unbelievable. The food is great, but the prices are terrible. I don't think that the rent on the location could be a justification for the most expensive pizza in the area save Soulshine. But hey, at least at soulshine you might get a little weed mixed in the dough at no extra charge. I spend less at a sushi bar eating like a hog than I do when I go to Sal and Mookies, but I guess you gotta pay those rent a cops a load of cash to keep all the fondrenites from getting robbed.

Just curious Kingfish, does Jay Suffering Succotash Schimmel also pay for ads on your site like Nathan Glenn. He he.

It's not the location. Walkers isn't having any problems. It's packed every night!

Schimmels really needs an overhaul!

If Jay wasn't for a public option I bet he is now.

Furthermore, Sal & Mookies is KRAP!

There is something Mr. Schimmel could do that would go over like gangbusters here.

Strip club?

you have to tell us

Bowling alley? Fondue cafe? Oxygen bar?

Actually a blues cafe would be a great idea, with great bar-be-que and other truely southern fair, plate lunches, and a late night scene. Or make the venue like Lusco's in Greenwood, with drawn curtain private dining. I would love to be able to take my girlfiend out to eat without my wife knowing......

Jay made a studied decision to cater to Democratic legislators and plaintiffs lawyers. Who the hell wants to rub elbows with that crowd??? There's not a thing in the world he can do now to overcome that stigma, and new ownership would have to do something spectcular to convince folks to take another look. There are already too many other good options, and Nick's arrives in December. Schimmel's is dead, dead, dead.

He's located across the street from the state's largest employer, which until very recently had HORRIBLE cafeteria food, and he can't draw a big lunch business? Very weird. (UMMC now has a decent staff cafeteria which is very convenient for those pressed for time).

You said it. He should have spent that time kissing the arses of the new urbanists. He'll have to develop a budget menu since 90% of them don't have any money but that is only a formality.

Kingfish said...

I'll keep it to myself for now but it would really work in that location. Nothing like it in town and would be a huge hit.

the part about UMC and lunch is a good point. Look at Two Sisters. As long as that Sillers Building is next door, they will always have a certain amount of traffic.

Yeah, you know the broke ones that pack Walkers, Sal and Mookies, Que Sera, Roosters, Basil's and Brent's every day and night.

Anonymous said...

UMC employees for the most part only get a half hour for lunch. It's too expensive and too far to walk, as well.

Urban night has killed Schimmel's as it has Elixir. On those nights you can't get a drink and the other patrons are rude to you.

Anonymous said...

If new urbanists are anything it is rude. They'll soon be holding the bag. They know NOTHING about economics.

Anonymous said...

It hasn't helped that Jay's wife has started fights and been rude to customers there in the past.

Anonymous said...

Why would you pay for Schimmel's when you can go get great food at Walker's? And Sal and Dookie's sucks.

Hey, did everyone see how crowded Fondren was on Saturday? Lennies, Que Sera, Campbell's Bakery, my street...Oh nevermind, those were the illegally parked JSU fans. SOMETHINGS GOT TO GIVE!!!!!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
