Few people know how big of a softie you are.
He's already pushed me off the bed once.
I would love to get one, how much do they run? Can you get one locally?
Sigh, they are not cheap. Not a common breed so you have to look around. They generally start around $800-1000 and up. However,if you look around you can find a deal every now and then. I paid less than that for Louis XIV but he is 2 1/2 years old and his owner was an ob-gyn nurse that worked all the time.
A few facts to keep in mind if you get one.
1. Use a stainless steel bowl. Some of them are allergic to plastic bowls if their food is in them.
2. Feed them sweet potato & fish combo. Wellness and Natural Balance make them. Makes their coat slicker. Many of them have food allergies and this is usually the safest food for them.
3. If you buy one, have heart checked. If you research this breed, you will see that the problem for this breed is mitrovalve problems. Will usually show up as a murmer. Vet can tell you if dog has one. Reputable breeder will have checked that and have proof of it and will let you get it checked as well.
Breeders. CKCS breeders are the best ones to get them from. Only two are in MS: Tupelo and Brookhaven and they are NOT cheap. If you want to get one, you are going to have to leave Jackson. Most reputable breeders will have a contract AND a questionare on their websites. Breeders are very picky about who gets them. Why? These are great dogs. Are VERY sensitive. Not an outside dog. I mean not an outside dog at all.
It means some trouble but avoid the puppy mills. Those dogs will tend to have more problems with their heart, hip, and patella (when buying have all three checked). By the way, avoid petfinder. Most of those are mixes and the others are puppy mills disguised as rescue organizations. Also, if the price seems real low, be careful. You don't want to buy a dog that you wind up putting down in a couple of years or dying on you because it had a class IV murmer.
Main advice I can give you is to research the breed. Its fun to do so actually. There are plenty of websites on them. Seems like trouble but they make the best dogs and are very friendly. Get along with everyone and they don't meet strangers. Are extremely intelligent.
By the way, DO NOT get one less than 12 weeks old. No decent breeder will allow them to leave the home less than that age. And all decent breeders will keep them in the home, not in some damn kennels outdoors.
By the way, there is a certain someone out there who is more than welcome to post her own commments on this breed as well as her recommendations.
