The old Alta Woods Church on Terry Road caught fire this afternoon.
Trent Nichols posted these photos on Facebook.
Nathan Rushing's pictures show the full scope of the damage.

Another abandoned 3/4 burned down building to sit for the next 10 years...
Quick correction- someone reached out and said it was presbyterian not Methodist, so they could be correct. I just know it is Alta Woods
Opportunity to get the property on the tax rolls. Eventually.
The vagrants can't blame this on starting a fire to stay warm.
Horrible. Great old church. Hearts broken because if this.

I love your optimism. I was thinking 20 years.
So tragic! Had it been vacant for anytime?
Presbyterian.
Believe the Methodist Church is the one to the south and it’s not burning. One burning is New Dimensions but it could have been Presbyterian at one time.
Hate to say it but I suspect arson. Belongs to LLC in Waco Texas. Taxes haven’t been paid for 2023.
As someone who works near there and has for 20+ years, it is very likely homeless. I know it’s hot outside but they still make fires to run away insects I guess. They started four different fires in the building next to us until it was torn down. Winter, summer…doesn’t matter.
9:42, that is peculiar. It was still operating as a church. Why would anybody want to put it on the tax rolls?
Remarkable symbolism.
9:42-so if it’s taxable it’s not a church. Waco Texas based ownership. That’s a Baptist town!
"Belongs to LLC in Waco Texas. Taxes haven’t been paid for 2023. "
Why would a church be paying taxes?
Attractive Church design, one of the best steeples ever. So many steeples these days are prefabbed white plastic affairs with no grace, no character. This old church likely has heart pine timbers and pine framing, so easily burned.
Alta Woods Presbyterian was there for decades but folded several years ago. The property was sold to New Dimensions church which left the building in 2017. Since then, it is owned by the real estate LLC which some claim has ceased paying the property taxes. The building has been inhabited by vagrants for years.
9:42 here. LLC bought it in November 2021. KF photos appear to show front door and some windows boarded up. Don’t think they were having church there recently.
It looked good from the Interstate. Regardless of who was occupying it, the building had considerable Potemkin Village value for Jackson (as did the black glass triangle, on the other side of the metro, which just got demolished). At 70mph, you just get a general impression - of there having been a large-scale project - of expensive construction.
Hopefully, one of Jackson's Carpetbagger developer dynasties, will salvage the finely-detailed portico, for use on the clubhouse of their next Madison County development. The repressed Doric style certainly conforms to their shame-based notions of good taste.
Vagrants and homeless people are now called “shelter challenged” by those who are “woke”.
So, it's OK to say arson but not insurance-lightning?
Wonderful old Presbyterian Church. My mother was a dedicated member for many years. So sad!
@5:15 PM - The woke crowds also say "un-housed." These are the same people who believe that squatting is ok.
Isn't that the church that was just auctioned off? Probably an insurance claim in the works! Seems coincidental!
It was one of many beautiful large, old churches in Jackson now in ruins.
I agree, ZeroBear.
Alta Woods Presbyterian. Behind First Pres, it was the largest Presbyterian church in the metro at one time. Found out that it was burning and drove down to watch. It was quite heartbreaking. So many memories there from many years ago.
Further proof that conservatives build things.... democrats do not. (or even maintain them)
