How much money does Jackson lose on garbage service? Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba reported to the City Council Monday that garbage services are operating at a $2.6 million deficit for the first three quarters of FY 2021 while only collecting 58% of revenue. The report is posted below. Read and weep.
Kingfish note: Surprise. Jackson suffers multi-million dollar deficies whenever it places a moratorium on cut-offs for non payment.

Governing against millennia of human nature and natural selection. Way to go, democrats.
Haven't received a utilities bill from Jackson in 14 months. Not paying until I do though I photograph my water meter on a weekly basis to collect the reading . So, therefore, I also haven't paid my garbage collection bill either.
My God, what incompetence . A 3rd grader can see that the city isn't losing money on garbage and water services, they just aren't collecting the money they "earn" by performing said services. It would be like Apple filing for bankruptcy because they are "in the red" and finding out that they only bothered to collet a payment on 50-60% of the items they sell. Aforementioned 3rd grader would probably take 30 seconds to come up with the solution...
So what is this insurance deficit and why wasn't it noted in Fy's 2016 & 2019? Are they not paying the municipality insurance?
a sanitation department that can't operate in the black has a management problem. That includes making people pay their bills.
Census shows loss of about 20,000 over the past ten years
173,514 2010
153,701 2020
(19,813)
(11.42%) % Change
And the Mayor's suggestion or recommendation is that the City raise the garbage collection rates/price....so that those actually paying their bills have to pay more so that those that are not paying their bills can continue to not paying their bills. No, Mr Mayor, rather than making me pay more because others won't pay their bills, how about just making them pay their bills like the rest of us do ? Respectfully, your proposed solution is stupid. You caused this problem but refusing to cutoff services to the nonpayers, and you can easily fix it by making them pay their bills as they should be or cutting off their services. Quit punishing those who are doing right and rewarding those who are doing wrong.
2020 US Census
Jackson SHRINKS to 153,701.
Black population stampedes the exits.
Where is the state auditor, also Jackson's murder rate is over 4.5x that of Chicago--the real number should be the attempts--the murder rate benefits from bad shots or good doctors
I have no idea why it is so hard for the city to start billing all entities that use city water. Get it fixed immediately, and start seeing the benefit of the revenues collected. If I could afford to sell, I would do so immediately!
Read and LAUGH (not weep) at the ineptitude!
I don't care about the extra $20/month. Let's be honest I can afford it. But to reduce pick-up to once a week is stupid. But even worse than that is everything having to fit in one can. When my yard guy comes he always picks up sticks and leaves and puts them in a bag or another can (cause I have trees in my yard- suck it gluckstadt). I'll ben raising hell or dumping it at Antards house if they don't pick it up at my curb.
Jackson does not have a sanitation dept. It was privatised YEARS ago.
One would presume that tax money funds garbage pickup
12:55. You are completely missing the point. The Democrat plan is for the few workers to pay for everybody else so they will continue to vote Democrat. If the Democrats say we will give you free garbage collection, free water, free healthcare, free housing, free food, etc. etc. But the Republicans say we are going to stop all this free stuff and everybody who is able will have to work. Who do you think most people, especially in Jackson, MS, will vote for. This is Chokealots plan. This doesn't even address the kickbacks and campaign donations.
2:13, you are correct. It is all about free everything for the Democratic voters. Most live like animals but the few at the top that live like Kings.
just think, only have to lose 3,702 more and Jackson is below the 150,000 threshold to be able to have CIDs and BIDs. Didn't take as long as I thought.
153,701 was probably all who bothered to be counted or could be located.
I still haven't had storm debris picked up in Heatherwood. Ridiculousness!!
12:55 Yeah, that's the left's definition of "paying your fair share:" You pay YOUR share, and you pay THEIR share. Remember, when you believe their is only so much pie to go around, they believe you've already taken THEIR share of the pie, so you should pay for both! Simple, right?
1:58 I'm reasonably sure you don't even see the irony in your "suck it Gluckstadt" jab. Of course, if you did, you wouldn't still live in Jackson, so........
Getting Jackson residents to pay.....that ship has sailed
4:42, set it on fire and break out the hot dogs and marshmallows.
What is crazy is I have friends in very, very nice neighborhoods who haven't gotten a water/sanitation bill in 4 years. Even those who asked/tried have not paid. So the mayor wants to make the (apparent) minority the city can bill pay for everyone they can't bill? It's insane. And, the same refrain - where did all the settlement money go that was supposed to be for water issues?
Somebody has deep pockets.
2:13, it's 12:55 here. Oh no, I completely understand the point. This is how Democrats buy votes, by giving free stuff to people who vote for them and so people will keep voting for them. But that doesn't make it right and doesn't mean I have to take it or that I can't speak out against it, which is what I was doing in my post as are you. I think we both agree it's wrong and simply buying votes.
Y'all do know it's because many of the "new" meters from the last administration didn't work for very long, don't you?
One of my two meters works fine so I've been getting that bill without fail.
The garbage situation, plus the latest with the ethics commission - baby chock is on a roll.

That settlement money is being used to cover the operating expenses. It will be gone at some point and very little if it will have been spent to fix anything.
