Check out Grizzell math!
WLBT's Anthony Warren delved into the Jackson garbage controversy last night. It was a fine piece of reporting. Read it here.
$63,000 per year for the average garbageman? Really?Just curious. Where is the rest of the media?

So waste mgt owns landfill where garbage goes? If they lose contract I’m sure they won’t jack up the city of Jackson’s cost to dump? Shouldn’t this be addressed by fcc in their contract.?
A good place for some serious skimming to go on, $63k with benefits would be wages for lower-end supervisory positions at most manufacturing companies in MS. I know someone who is a school principle in one of the rural counties that makes about this, has a master's degree in education. But anyway, I thought there would be no need for hoppers with the new trucks?
"By comparison, drivers with one Waste Management subcontractor in Jackson currently earn $16.50 an hour, while hoppers make $14"
No wonder JPD can't find officers. Pays more to be a trashman
Charles Williams, P.E. phd, should be Mayor. I value his opinion above all the Boy Mayor's toady suck-ups.
If I had to trust someone's opinion in this matter it would be Charles Williams who has actually been director of public works and has some actual expertise in this area. The mayor and his supporters simply want to concentrate as much of the city's contracts in the hands of HIS political support as possible, no matter the cost to the taxpayer.
Ashby says that residents are currently paying $20 per month, but that will go up to $35. Grizzel refutes Ashby's comment by saying that residents are only paying about $4.80 per week for garbage pick up currently.
So, there's that. :)
Funny headline… Freudian slip? lol
"Foote previously said collection costs would go from a little more than $20 a month to between $35 and $40. Meanwhile, trash would only be collected once a week, compared to two times a week under the city’s current agreement with Waste Management.
Ward Four Councilman Brian Grizzell, though, said on his Facebook page that trash pickup is currently $4.80 per week, not the amount mentioned by Foote. He also said that citizens right now are not getting what they pay for."
LOL.....Someone needs to tell Grizzell that $4.80/week and $20/month is almost identical.
Waste Management, the largest waste disposal company in the country, is having a hard time getting employees to show up (like most companies in America).
How is some brand new company going to somehow find employees more easily that Waste Management? Answer me that Virgi.
Being a "hopper" is a career position? Chowke is talking trash.
Our millions of dollars Cameras will keep an eye on everything to satisfy my narcissism, for I am King of Jackistan.
And so what?? How much would you do it for 6 days a week, rain,sleet,snow,100 degree temps, 27 degree temps very few holidays???
The article says “ Foote previously said collection costs would go from a little more than $20 a month to between $35 and $40.”
Then it says “ Ward Four Councilman Brian Grizzell, though, said on his Facebook page that trash pickup is currently $4.80 per week, not the amount mentioned by Foote.”
So a 4 week month is $19.20, a 5 week month is $24 and an annually averaged 4.3 week month is $20.80. Ashby isn’t wrong. What is Brian arguing here other than his mathematical incompetence or to the other extreme, using his over-sharpened pencil to create a wrinkle of doubt against Ashby and the other 2 NO votes? Sure wish Brian would apply his newfound scrutiny to the rest of Jackson’s finances.
Three of y'all said the same thing. Either y'all don't read the other comments before you share your wit and wisdom, or KF hasn't approved them yet.
Math hard.....huh Brian ? Lol, why do we continue to wander aloud on what is wrong with our country ?
The fancy lift will only handle the new garbage they are going to sell me.
What about the garbage cans full of yard waste?
In the spring and fall it's not unusual for me to put out half a dozen cans with yard waste. On top of that - cut limbs. Who's picking that up?
Once again, the city fails to inform the public. The WM contract for twice weekly - OVER $2 LESS PER MONTH and no extra garbage can fee. As far as workers, I've never seen a WM truck that wasn't fully staffed so they must not be having a problem hiring people.
Kingfish - The lack of attention is appalling as is the City's attempt to bypass their constituents (AKA those of us paying the bills).
Please contact your councilman and copy the council to let them know you do not want half the garbage collection for twice the price (not including yard debris or boxes). They are meeting this afternoon and need to to hear from their constituents!

Corruption being practiced in broad daylight.
Lived in Jackson since 96 and I can only remember one time my trash was not picked up and that was about a month ago and they picked it up the next day.
"With cart costs included, FCC would have the highest weekly and monthly rates for once-a-week and twice-a-week collections." (from the online story)
If this is true, then why the fuck are we going with them?
Hauling waste shouldn't be a jobs program, why are we paying MORE?
Is it the average or the median? Those could be very far apart.
There's 4 weeks in a month. $4.80 x 4 = $19.20. Theres that.
11:56 but its 52 weeks in a year not 48! Therefor your math is wrong.
FYI 11:56, when performing any mathematical functions requiring a monthly cost derived from a weekly cost, the correct method is to use 4.3333 weeks per month (52/12=4.3333, so the actual cost on a monthly basis is 4.80 x 4.3333
Garbage men are the unsung heroes of society. They are literally more important than doctors. A world without garbage men would create more sickness, death, and suffering than a world without doctors.
$63,000 is low.
I think we should pass the hat and buy Brian one of those fancy Texas Instruments calculators....they can handle these complex math questions.
Do you need wooden shoes to "wander aloud"?
Attn 11:56 I see from your feckless explanation that you are a product of the Jackson Ms. public school system. There are only 3-28 day months every four years. The rest are 29 days, 30 days, an 31 days. I know this is hard to comprehend since this is probably the first time you have heard this and you probably can not read a calendar.
@11:56am please read 10:36am!
There are more than 12X4 weeks in a year, it's 52 weeks, good grief.
Mr. Foote had it right, Grizzel only added ignorance and snark.
Charles Williams for Mayor! Where do I send a campaign contribution?
Lol, is it wonder aloud ?
Mr. Foote graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point). I think he can read calendars and maps.
I went to Councilman Grizzell's Facebook page, and he stated that no matter who would get the contract, the pricing will go up. He states that Jackson only needs one day of pick-up, and that Byram gets by with just one day of pick-up each week, so Jackson should be able to do the same.
KF, is there some way to do a simple apples-to-apples comparison of the bids? Is there some way to take into account all of the costs involved in this situation.
