Weill will not seek re-election

Hinds County Circuit Judge Jeff Weill sent this press release to JJ

Hinds County Circuit Court Judge Jeff Weill, Sr. announced today that he will not seek reelection to a third circuit court term in 2018.    Judge Weill, elected twice to the Jackson City Council and twice to the circuit bench, has dedicated more than a decade to public service, and is grateful and humbled by the outpouring of community support he has received during that time.  Public safety will continue to be a priority as Judge Weill concludes this term in office on December 31, 2018, and while the decision not to seek reelection was a difficult one, he remains committed to the local justice system as he considers further opportunities to serve.

Get out of Jackson while you can. If you think Jackson is bad now, wait until 2019. Weill put up with more than anyone deserved, and I wish him the best!

Jackson and Hinds County are lost.

Good! He needs to take Steiner with him....
He's just like Jeff Sessions in many ways.
Big disappointment!

Does this mean Judge Weill is in line for a federal judicial appointment? He was in the running for the US Attorney position that went to Hurst.

Wow - 2017 has been the gift that keeps on giving for increases in Madison and Rankin County property values. First the mayoral election, then Govna Pheel creates that weird committee in response to JPS crisis and now Weill is gone.

As an attorney who practiced criminal defense in front of him, while like most of us he is not perfect, I honestly believed he tried to make Hinds County a better place. While I didn’t always agree with his methods, I do believe his heart was in the right place most of the time.

Yep. The whole state can act like Jackson’s future has no bearing on the rest of us. All you folks two miles outside of Jackson should rest easy.

This is a huge announcement! Judge Weill balances out the judicial system in Hinds County. I practice before him and find him to be fair and impartial. Tough when needed as well!

So does Kim Wade imply that Sessions was not far-right enough?? Or how was he a disappointment????

@7:33 if you paracticed before him and didn’t think he was big a nut job as the rest of us, then you are one of the spineless lackies who just did whatever he told you to to do. Spare us.

6:53 has a rotten boat with many holes in it -- too many to repair and salvage. Also wants (and is jealous of) the newer boats around him to sink as he surely will.

This will be a BIG loss for Jackson criminal justice if we aren't able to elect another person that's as willing to clean the streets as Judge Weill is. I really hate to see him leave (but can't blame him) and hope he really will find "further opportunities to serve". Best wishes Judge Weill and thanks for your service.

Talk in NE Jackson is that Ashley is going to run. He would win in all likelihood

Anonymous said...

Must be gearing up for a run for Court of Appeals.

Anonymous said...

Attn 1:29 who is Ashley?

Anonymous said...

He leaves the bench in exactly 365 days and you jackasses are foretelling his replacement already? You might want to consider the electorate.

This gives some of you plenty of time to get busy on personal expungements.

Circuit Judge is a shitty job. Reciting guilty pleas 80-90 times in a day. The rest of the time is sifting through poorly written civil briefs. Then they get to preside over criminal trials where it is basically gun slinging. Then they get the pleasure of having a hypercritical elected appellate courts picking over every detail. No matter what the judge decides 50% of the attorneys talk shit about them. At the end of the day they draw a check less than the majority of all attorneys.

Jeff Weill is a good man and served us with honor and integrity.

File those Rule 56 motions soon, defendants!

Ashley Ogden, who has surely made enough money suing every apartment complex in town, is likely going to run.

Anonymous said...

Ashley will not win if he does run.

Love the blog, hate the haters. Haters gonna hate.

10:50 you are hopelessly stupid...Weill is just another white bred, white fed white boy who came from a rich Daddy and has no clue what it feels like to be poor, uneducated and without opportunity... During his tenure, the crime rate has gone up, not down. If he really cared about his fellow man, he would serve the public by going into the inner city and volunteering his time and education to teach adult programs to people who have never had his opportunities in life

Why would you say Ashley couldn't win? I think he would easily win. It's true however that this district isn't just northeast Jackson and yes it run into south Jackson areas.

It is not the judge's job to emote with the poor, uneducated and jobless. It is his job to interpret the law and assess the evidence and control the process.

You obviously know nothing about law. A Judge isn't there to be a mentor of the poor. In fact that is one of the most uninformed statements one could ever make. Please get back to your hate spewing activist job because your in the wrong wheelhouse on this blog. Furthermore, what does your statement have to do with the current position were blogging about?

Judge Weill is the only public official in Hinds County who is not corrupt. I sure hope someone else with integrity takes over. Or maybe this FBI investigation that has been ongoing for years will finally result in heads rolling under USA Hurst. Thank you for your service, Judge Weill.

Not running again for Circuit Judge. Anyone who has actually tried criminal cases in front of him knows he wants to be, and generally is, a prosecutor. DA election is next year, and Smith may not be the incumbent. Hmm...

Anonymous said...

@12:39 - now that would be fun! Can you imagine the criminal housecleaning Jackson would get with Weill as the DA? I know it's a pipe dream that Weill would ever want to be or could be elected as the DA, but how great it would be!

Ali Shamsiden
Larita Stokes
Robert Shuler Smith
Bill Skinner

If Weill cared about Jackson he would retire now and let the Governor appoint someone similarly minded that might when an election

Anonymous said...

Guessing he goes fed route-- for the pension alone.

Judge Bill Skinner has served this county well for more than 30 years. People forget Bill Skinner started hjs career as a Jackson Police Officer. He is honest and hard working. He has been a great Justice Court Judge and was the first Judge to introduce Drug Court to Justice Court. As County Judge, he created a Youth Drug Court. Judge Bill Skinner has changed the lives of hundred of people that deserved a second chance while also holding criminals accountable with stiff sentences. Skinner would make a great Circuit Judge. I enjoy JJ but sometimes the comments are from outer space - calling Skinner crooked is as crazy as calling him a liberal.

Anonymous said...

Skinner is not corrupt. He is incompetent. He has been reversed many times. He has been punished for his lack of basic legal principles. He is the perfect personification of the Peter Principle...

Anonymous said...

Who called Skinner crooked

Anonymous said...

225...Hopefully Robert Shuler Smith will soon be cozy in a cell and hinds county can elect a real DA

Nobody who actually practices law in front of Weil says he is fair and impartial and follows the law. Nobody that is honest at least. Tough on crime.. yes definitely. Following the law and unbiased...not so much.

Anonymous said...

Do you prognosticators really think if the man were planning to pull an end-around and run for another job a year from now he would have announced his retirement a year in advance? As my grandpa used to say, "Ain't no percentage in that!"

Anonymous said...

Better to ride off into the sunset on your own terms while still in the saddle than to be forced out and stained with an election loss. Jeff is doing his party (and the shrinking ranks of white Democrat attorneys in NEJax) a favor by announcing now. Lumumba and the Kushniks are going to come after this seat HARD for ShamsiDunce as part of their efforts to take over every aspect of Jackson (and Hinds) governance. There will be another property tax increase next year. Total control (and redistribution of declining real estate wealth) is more important than anything else even if it means more population and economic losses for the city to Rankin and Madison counties.

The real question that hasn't yet been asked is why did Jeff tender a press release to JaxJamb in lieu of issuing one to the Clarion Ledger or Jackson Free Press, the States two newspapers. With all due respect to JaxJamb, this is a blog, not the fourth estate. Speculation on the street is 1)hoping for a Trump appointment; 2)running for congress; 3)getting Phil's appointment to Thad's seat when Thad retires early so he will be an encumber in the special election: 4)doing damage control from the threat letters; 5) has some serious illness; 6) is taking a clue from Judicial Performance; 7) anything else you might think of. And of course none of this answers the question of why he wouldn't tender a press release to the press unless he's not really planning to not run. Anybody got info that sheds light please chime in.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
