Freeze quits!

Press conference at 7:30 PM on ESPNews.   Read the bombshell story here.

Press Conference: Vitter says there is a "conduct in his personal life" that is not allowed by the university.   Vitter says he first learned of this last week and completed investigation yesterday.

Bjork: "It's a sad day" for the Ole Miss family.  School released Freeze's work-related phone records in response to a public records request.  One phone call brought to school's attention.  Bjork said it was only time that number was called and lasted less than a minute.  Initially attributed it to a misdialed number.  Bjork said they looked into the rest of his phone records. "In our analysis, we discovered a pattern of conduct..".  Freeze "admitted the conduct" at a meeting last night.  He offered to resign this afternoon and his offer was accepted.  Coach Freeze was allowed to meet with his coaches and players.  Assistant Coach Matt Luke will coach the football team for the 2017 season.  Wesley McGriff will be elevated to Assistant Head Coach.  This matter is not related to NCAA case and "our response speaks for itself."

Vitter:  "This is a very hard day.  This is a very painful decision but it is the right decision."

Questions:

Bjork won't discuss if the pattern of conduct referred to multiple calls to escort services.  He says he hasn't even thought about a coaching search.  We start practice in two weeks.  There will be plenty of time to address a coaching search.  He met with coaching staff at 6:00 and the team around 6:30.  "I think they handled it very very maturely."

"We've talked about several personal items, but we didn't discover any of those things being true in this analysis."

As an alumnus and firm supporter of Mississippi State University, I find no satisfaction in this...it's a sad, sad situation all the way around. Coach Freeze, like ALL the rest of us, is a flawed human; I'm not making excuses for him. I'm just stating a fact. I would hope that instead of making hurtful and insulting remarks about this mess, we ALL can just take a moment, leave the school rivalries aside, and pray for better times.

There is something about Bible-thumpers who engage escorts and hookers that seems, just, a little hypocritical.

Cue Dana Carvey as the SNL Church Lady...

Surely Archie Manning and Mike Glenn are shocked?

Anonymous said...

So when do we find out that these "escorts" were contacted for recruits? I'm betting the NCAA may want to continue its investigation along these lines. Would be interested to see phone records of assistant coaches to see whether they, too, have phoned escort services at times corresponding to recruiting activities. Yeah, let's start with Matt Luke's phone records.

Time for sone Sweet Shirley Brown - Lookin for the Poon Tang Man...you gotta laugh folks to keep from crying. Seems like every time we think Ole Miss football may just make it out of the cellar we pull a pistol out and shoot another toe off.

I'd just like to say said...

Allow me to address the absolutely shocked, sad and dismayed Christian folks that suggest Coach Freeze, an outspoken self proclaimed Christian man, and his apparently devastated family, should "be in our prayers" followed up with the whole "he who is not without sin...."thing: Where were you and what was your reaction to Jimmy Swaggart crying his eyes out on your TV screen. Where were you and what was your reaction when Jim and Tammy Faye Baker cried their eyes out on your TV screen. Were your "thoughts and prayers" really with Jimmy, Jim and Tammy Faye? The same kind of hucksters that defrauded millions of dollars from their followers as self proclaimed Christian people? Did your makeup stream down your face as you cried with Tammy Faye? Did you up your support for the PTL club? Or how about Jim Jones. Did you shed a tear for Ole Jim or did you shed many tears for his followers that drank the koolaid? So lets go back to this whole "he who is without sin cast the first stone" scripture. The problem with that is some of you want to know how far the stone can be thrown, at what accuracy, and at what cost because quite frankly, supposedly "everybody does it". You reap what you sow, and tonight some have a plateful. Rightfully so. I can only hope that (Former) Coach Hugh Freeze didn't fall on the sword to protect the University. That would be beyond tragic.

To our Red and Blue friends - It's not so much that we enjoy your misery. When you got that first amazing class while you had a bad team and an unproven coach fans all over America said 'they cheated'. A LOT of Red and Blue fans wanted to believe they didn't cheat. For us MSU fans, if they can get a class like that for no other reason than 'Hugh is such a fine Christian man and Ole Miss is such a fine institution' then we are screwed. We can't compete with the BEST players in the nation at four positions. But if they cheated, they will keep cheating and eventually get caught. Part of that cheating was Freeze is either a fine, honest, Christian, or a lair and cheat. Which is it? So it's not just gloating, we are relieved to know for certain that you weren't that good. We suspected it all along, but proof is better.

I'm confused. Were the hookers for Freeze's personal pleasure or was he brokering hookers to student players as another recruiting enticement? Or both?

Freeze Gets Grant To Operate JSU Football Camp.. said...

For the JSU faithful alumnus (that means just one from a group of alumni), fear not, for I am with you. But, first, here's your post: "Kindly waiting for the gentleman who was so upset about the $2 million grant JSU got from MDHS to show up and whine about UM wasting $5 million of "his" tax dollars on Freeze's salary/escorts. Please let me know when he arrives. Bwahahahahaha! Bless."

The difference is this. JSU is benefitting in a huge way from taxpayer funds ripped off through a bogus grant crafted to enrich the school (Where did you get the 2 million figure unless you're employed there?). And the debacle (plus salaries) up at That School Up North is being funded by Athletics Department funds that are held in an account of millions of SEC generated dollars, not my tax dollars. However, my tax money DOES kick in every time JSU fires a president, coach or department head and we have to rent U-Hauls.

Do you see how this stuff works now? Are you about ready to provide a link to this JSU ripoff grant enrichment? Thought not. Blessed indeed.

Both men were wrong and both lost their jobs over it, so that's not the issue. Who committed the worse sin, Bobby Petrino or Hugh Freeze? Many will contend that paying for it is worse than having a girlfriend, but not me. The hookers leave when you're done.

someoneinnorthms said...

Freeze should've waited until he was in the US Senate to call escort services--not nearly the same kind of fallout.

Anonymous said...

6:53 Freeze is clearly worse. Not because of how he got girls but because he hides behind being an outstanding Christian. In the south, where most people are Christians, we know that Christians are not perfect. Like everyone is not perfect. It's the crowing about your Christianity, the false pride, while being such a sleaze ball.
I guess we don't know if the girls were for Freeze or for recruits or both. Early reports seem to indicate they were for HF. And it's only logical that the head coach would have an underling to get girls for recruits.

Anonymous said...

"The Ole Miss Family is shocked and disappointed" says Bjork and Vitter. Bullshit.
They figured the time was ripe to pull the plug on the Freeze mafia without having to pay this crook all that money. Blame the revelation on one of the myriad lawsuits and get him the hell out of here. Save the money, Freeze was dead meat anyway. It was fun while it lasted but you can't fool the world forever.

Anonymous said...

LSU would take Shea but without his brother. He already burned that bridge.

Anonymous said...

I can't wait for the hookers to start doing press conferences with their attorneys asking for money. It's going to get real sporty around here! I think Monday will be a nice reveal day. My prediction: at least 3 hookers, two attorneys, 6-7 news cameras.

Anonymous said...

Good point, 7:32. Everyone knew Petrino was a jerk up front.

Anonymous said...

@6:32. There you are!
Nope. I do not work for JSU. But maybe one day I will and you can pay me. The thought titillates me in ways you can only imagine.
Yeah, I know the majority of the salary that the right Reverend Coach Freeze made was from sources other than state monies. I just wanted to see if you'd bite. And you did. See how that works? Stay mad about all things HBCU while accepting all other madness with open arms - we don't care. Bless!

Anonymous said...

Did Nutt's attorney also obtain Freeze's UM-issued credit card "expense" charges? How did he pay his ladies (or men) of the night?

Anonymous said...

I think the #1 lesson we can all glean from this is that anytime a public figure is described as a bible-quoting, god fearin' family man, he is screwing hookers.

The second lesson to learn is that the chickens always come home to roost. And it couldn't have happened to a more smug, self-righteous, egotistical, my-shit-doesn't-stink group of self-important assholes.

Kingfish said...

Everyone is assuming the hookers/escorts were for the coach.

Anonymous said...

KF do you have proof otherwise?

Anonymous said...

What I find remarkable is that no one else knew a thing about this. Obviously, if they did, they would be gone also. If this was done for the players, they also did a remarkable job of not disclosing anything. I remember as a teenager, or slightly older, the topic of conversation among males virtually always revolved around females and activities with females.

Anonymous said...

At this point, Ole Miss had better be paying Hugh plenty of cash to keep quiet on why he really called in hooker(s). It's in his and his family's best interest for it to be for recruits. Although that is terrible it is not as terrible as the alternative.

Ole Miss' best interest would be that Hugh is just channeling his inner Bill Clinton and it has nothing to do with recruits. The NCAA penalty matrix is already blown out of the water with current allegations. Short of the DP, there is absolutely no way for them to apply punishment per the matrix based just on current allegations. If this comes down who knows what they will do with it...

Anonymous said...

KINGFISH: The Ole Miss administration WANTS you to believe the hooker/escorts were for the coach. The real problem is, what does the NCAA believe? If they start a new investigation, and they should, Freeze will be joined by a whole bunch of co-conspirators. In high places. The overnight investigation and resignation following these "revelations" do not pass the smell test. If getting rid of Freeze, but saving buyout and/or salary money at the expense of huge embarrassment is the grand result, UM gets a bargain. That's what they hope. I think not. Ole Miss needs to start looking for a new coach, AD, and president. This will not end with Freeze.

Anonymous said...

KF -- God knows I may be giving too much credit here, but I have to believe --even after all that's been revealed here-- that Freeze is not stupid enough to personally line up hookers for recruits using his state-issued cell phone.

Surely, if hookers for recruits were the plan, you would have a bag man with a burner phone doing the dirty work. Right?

At this point, I'm fine with being terrible for a few years. Just someone please tell me he wasn't this apocalyptically stupid.

Anonymous said...

@KF assuming Bjork's words were true(and that's suspect at best) he stated this does not involve the NCAA, which leads to personal use. There will be more to come, stay tuned. #jimmyswaggertofthegridiron

Anonymous said...

BREAKING NEWS. . .The University of Mississippi makes "MAJOR Investment" in the burner phone industry for its athletic department.

Anonymous said...

Someone made a good point upthread that it wouldn't fall to the head coach to do "admin work" like buying sex for recruits. There would be an underling to assume that risk.

I too can't wait for the parade of hookers when they start talking! Their ship just came in.

Anonymous said...

Aww guys - haven't we told y'all? It's just like speeding - everyone does it. I'm sure your coach is dialing up the hookers before the flight home to their loving wife and kids too.

Anonymous said...

8:51, while I agree with lesson #1, it is not always hookers but you can bet those bible-quoting god fearing family men, if not screwing hookers are screwing someone, and most of the time it is both!

Second lesson spot on.

KF has it, the best case for the Beav would be those hookers were for his, while having to spend the next year under house arrest with his wife.

I am guessing those call girls were for recruits. Half the state is Perry Masoning the pieces of that puzzle complete by Monday.

Willing to bet the Rebel nation feels the icy cold freeze of death breathing on their necks, July heat be damned!

It is after 11 and Friday, I think a bourbon is in order.

Anonymous said...

The head coach doesn't use a state issued cell phone to line up hookers for recruits right? He uses it to line up his personal hookers. That makes sense right? No one will ever suspect. No one had any idea he was doing this kind of stuff. After all, he is a fine upstanding Southern Christian leader of young men. He really mislead and befuddled the whole Ole Miss administration all these years.
We are shocked and appalled. Boy howdy!

Item: I have twenty acres of prime real estate in the resort region formerly known as the Florida Everglades for sale. Real reasonable. Serious offers only.

Kingfish said...

All I'm saying is that all we know is he called an escort service in Tampa. That's it. We don't know who actually received the benefit of the services. When you don't know, you don't know.

Anonymous said...

If some of these activities involved 17 year old recruits, we may have additional "criminal charges." By the way, don't these recruits have escorts when on official visits to make sure there is nothing impermissible going on from alumni. If other coaches or school personnel had knowledge of these activities, good bye. These acts had better have been for his own pleasure or we are facing "death" penalty like punishment.

Anonymous said...

Latest reports are that the purchases were for his personal consumption, not recruits. It shows his true character anddestroys any iota of credibility he might have had on the other issues. My concern is for his wife and three daughters who will have to bear the stigma of what there father did.

as OlecMiss is all about diversity these days. It is time for their next coach to be black. A graduate from a SWAC conference that can relate to the greater number of recruits. State was successful with Croom and he was from Bama. Southern Miss is the champion of diversity. They have had a woman and now a black..
Ole Miss talks good but let's see what they can do when they can know show real progressive behavior.

Anonymous said...

The only conclusion is they were drunk with power. As I said before, too many high end attorneys in Mississippi will soon have their names shown for the world to see and this will be on the same scale as the Ashley Madison Scandal

Ole Miss needs to clean house entirely. Vitter and Bjork need to hit the road. An "in crowd booster" told me about Freeze and the hookers last YEAR and it was fairly common knowledge among the higher ups. He and his wife lived a charade marriage and Freeze's best girlfriend hung around his office in front of everybody. He is guilty of rank hypocrisy and they need to run his ass out of Lafayette County and never let him darken the door again. I am OM class of '68 and I am sick of the school selling its soul and pride just to have a good football team. Give me an honorable man with class and dignity and let him run the team. The record is what it is. I am tired of having to bathe with lye soap when I read an article about my alma mater!!!!!! Freeze, Vitter, and Bjork have demented my school. Adios, MFers, and good riddance. To bad rubbish.

How do you think we can get a decent coach (character wise) after the way we discarded Cutcliffe after we didn't need him because Eli graduated. Nutt should have figured this place out when he made the trip to Ole Miss in Scruggs' jet, and it was confiscated by the fed. This sense of superiority is sickening. We probably do lead the nation in most convicted law school graduates. Signed Disgruntled

Until the NFL has to pay for a farm team system like MLB these stories will keep on coming. The money involved in DIV I football is like heroin to the junkie. The whole university charade around DIV I ball is a pox on all our houses. A farm team will allow theses kids to be paid a salary, and move up and down the system based on talent and team requirements. The universities could get back to doing what they do best...turning out a bunch liberals until they get their first real job and the tax man cometh.

I have no idea how Hugh Freeze ever even got the Ole Miss job. Who are his coaching mentors? Really who the heck did he legit learn football from?

He looks like a weirdo. I never met him, but he sure does act like a weirdo. I once read an article that he told his wife years ago that he would be an SEC head football coach. What normal person says that? Then he put up this act that he was some amazing person like he followed the Golden Rule better than anyone else. Bit of advice Ole Miss, genuinely really nice people don't brag about being really nice.

If Freeze was some amazing person wouldn't he have been teaching/coaching high school at some inner city Title I school instead of a private school?

I wouldn't even put Freeze in the Top 5, heck 10 of best coaches in Mississippi the last several years. With Mullen, Monken, Mumme, DuBose, Fedora, Hopson, and a slew of assistants, Freeze looks like crap.

Nutt got him out. He should probably thank Nutt for offering a scholarship to the older Nkemdiche, because if it wasn't for that who knows if Ole Miss would have ever pulled in the recruits that they did.

Anonymous said...

I'd just like to say said... that was so beautiful that made me cry.

Unless something has very dramatically changed at Ole Miss there is no way football players would ever need hookers (that comes 30 years and about 100 pounds later). The hookers would be for the coach, or EVEN WORSE, they could be for other "influential" people.

There are no doubt many good Christians; however, when one trots out the phrase, "but I'm a Christian" just a little too much, just know that crooks use this as an impetus to excuse their crooked actions instead of actually being beholden to some higher moral code.

They figure they can do whatever the hell they want because their sins, past, present, and future, have been forgiven by the idea that Jesus died on the cross and they are therefore absolved from any responsibility. I see it all the time, and sadly, it works.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
