Molpus irony

Dick Molpus, the leader of Parents for Public Schools, the Parent's Campaign, and against all things charter, probably even Old Charter, has an interesting family. Here is this engagement announcement from several years ago in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal:

"Engagement/Wedding Announcements
by NEMS Daily Journal

Molpus-Crews

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Henderson Molpus Jr. of Jackson announce the engagement of their daughter, Helen Nash Molpus, to William Lowrey Crews Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lowrey Crews of Tupelo.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arliss Young Nash of Corinth, and the late Richard Henderson Molpus Sr. and Mrs. Richard Henderson Molpus Sr. of Philadelphia.

She is a graduate of Murrah High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Furman University and a master’s degree in Southern studies from the University of Mississippi.

The prospective groom is the grandson of the late Martha Ann Burke of Jackson and Robert Oliver Burke Sr. of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Dr. and Mrs. John David Crews of Oxford.

He is a graduate of Tupelo High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Vanderbilt University.

The couple will exchange vows on Oct. 10, 2009
."

Take a look at where his daughter works:

It must be pointed out that the district operates oversees both charter schools and direct-run schools. Now take a look at son-in-law:

Must make for some interesting chatter at holiday dinners. ;-) Maybe they can invite David and Bobbie over to discuss the benefits of placing children in private schools instead of public schools as well.

Maybe that they see no future in the timber industry with Mississippi's forest-to-sawmill highway system in ruins?

Maybe Andy Mullins has found a second career now that he's retiring.

Are you equating being against charter schools with being against private or independent schools in general? Or is KIPP Academy a charter school?

Justin said...

You should probably leave people's families out of pissy little arguments over charter schools. stick to the issues.

@9:48 - KIPP schools are charters.

@9:54 - Take the sanctimony back to the JFP. A lot of us find it interesting that Molpus is so adamantly opposed to charters, yet both his daughter and son-in-law not only support charters, but make their livings by leading charter schools/districts.

same old same! liberal wingnuts want YOU put YOUR kids in "thugs- bee's-us" middle school however they put THEIR kids in St. Andrews!!!

That is hilarious. Charters have done an incredible job with the NOLA public school system.

The 8th circle of hell is home to the hypocrites!

I love it when white Democrats believe their children belong in successful schools while forcing poor minorities to remain in failing schools.

Remember, this is the "party of diversity."

While never being a fan of Molpus (who, I believe, epitomizes the liberal scold), his daughter graduated from MURRAH sometime around '02-'03. That time frame would be about the time Murrah was, maybe not the 8th level of Hell, but, most certainly the 6th or 7th. Her husband graduated from Tupelo High School, another public school. Like most parents, they cannot control what their children do when grown. It probably does make for interesting conversation around the dinner table. To say he sent his to successful school while...is just not accurate. Ultimately, it would be nice if he would just shut up and go away.

Am I missing something?

Mr. Molpus advocates on behalf of public schools and against charter schools.

His seemingly successful daughter and son-in-law both attended and graduated from public high schools. That sounds like putting your money (more than your money your daughter) where your mouth is.

His daughter and son-in-law work for employers who may advocate for and profit from the expansion of charter schools he advocates against. Such advocacy, in light of where his daughter and son-in-law work, sounds very principled to me.

Where is the hypocrisy in any of this?

Fordice grabbed a piece of Molpus timber and took his ass to the woodshed. He lost most of his principles and compromised the rest. Think how worse off MS would be had this goob made it to the state house. Who cares what his daughter does....or him for that matter?

who could ever be against Old Charter??

Perhaps the previous poster says it best: "Am I missing something here?" Or perhaps the more salient questions is: has your personal pique with Molpus caused you to lose all perspective? It's plain creepy to run a political opponent's child's wedding announcment. As to the substance of your post, it's nonsensical. His daughter is putting her public school education to work at one of the best turn-around districts in the country. His son-in-law is in the administration of a nearly 100% African American school focused on higher performance (though your doctored photo makes it appear lily white). I'm sure he's proud of both.

I found it quite amusing more than anything else. The man who is leading the charge against charter schools in Mississippi has a daughter and son in law who work for them.

Kind of like Mary Matalyn and James Carville. Guess you missed the part about the post that said "irony".

Go look it up and lighten up, Francis.

Um. I don't comment at the JFP. I simply thing that this adds little to the dialog, which, in all honesty, should be going on. Education reform is important, and I approve of some of the aspects of the governor's plan. It's true that hypocrisy is the vaseline of political intercourse, but, still, this adds little to what we should be talking about.

I'm with 9:54 from yesterday. Ironic or not, the families of public figures should be off limits unless something involving them is legitimately newsworthy on its own. Some people commented on the "irony" of the fact that VP Cheney's daughter, whom he loves and supports, is gay, while Pres. W. Bush's administration supported anti-gay legislation. I thought that was a cheap shot against the Vice-President. Maybe I'm just an overprotective Dad who has a bunch of girls, but that's how I feel about it.

Make them off-limits on your website Dad. Okay?

It's difficult to present or comment on extreme, political irony without describing it. If you redact half the conundrum, you no longer have irony. Even someone with 'a bunch of girl' children should understand this.

This is interesting in the whole argument over public education in our state. I can not help but note that Murrah high school produced a student like Mrs. Crews who went on to complete both undergraduate and graduate degrees at both private and public institutions. In my opinion, there are societal problems that must be at least explored, at best understood before we can begin to address the many questions of charter schools as a state.

While a previous post used the 6th or 7th ring of Hell to describe Murrah High School when Mrs. Crews was there. They had something going on there. She took advantage of every opportunity that Murrah offered her and used that to begin a career.

In my opinion it is a lot more about the student than it is the educator. The education is there. What the student chooses to do with the education that is offered is up to her or him. The only purpose I can conceive for charter schools is to get rid of the noise.

Congratulations on your success Mr. and Mrs. Crews. Thanks for taking Mississippi to Louisiana! They really need y'all down there!!

One must look deeper. Molpus contributed $$$ to the Friends of Mary Landrieu. Nash was an aide with Landrieu. Now she is a very high paid Chief of Staff with RSD. Go figure. Politics as usual. She has no education credentials.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
