D.L. Garner: What are the Most Important Things in our Lifetimes?

Reading through columns from the fall of 2020 before that year’s election, I hoped to get some ideas about what to write this week. What a hoot! A column in September was titled “Most important election in our lifetimes.” In October, “Censoring for the good of the people.” In November a few days before the election, “What if the LEFT wins,” and after the election, “The new standard.”

Most, if not all of the national elections over the past 20 to 200 years have been touted as “the most important election in our lifetimes.” We hear dire warnings about what the other side will do if they win. “Democracy” is evidently on this year’s ballot! Someone, please ask Siri whether that’s true and what it means. No one can explain it down here on earth.

October’s column, “Censoring for the good of the people” was inspired by Allum Bokhari’s book, “DELETED,” an impressive case that the Internet has become the transit that tech companies use to censor everything we read, hear, say, or think. Bokhari’s citations were impressive, documenting the power of Google, Facebook, and Twitter to sway users’ choices and opinions.

November’s first column, “What if the LEFT wins,” took candidate Biden’s promises to heart when he essentially said he would undo everything President Trump had done. To his credit, President Biden’s raising gas prices to historic highs has increased inflation by 400% and pretty much undone Trump’s economic successes. Now we know!

The first column after the election, “The new standard,” laid out many of Trump’s accomplishments, such as making America energy independent while leading the world in reducing CO2 emissions in 2019. President Biden kissed that baby goodbye on his first day in office, and things have been going downhill ever since.

The last paragraph of that column asked, “Will the LEFT continue to hate Trump supporters? Will lower and middle income workers get their jobs back? Will cost-of-living expenses rise? What new steps will the next administration take to end covid? Will those steps infringe guaranteed freedoms spelled out in the Bill of Rights?”

Now we know what the last “most important election in our lifetimes” portended for us. It hasn’t been pretty, but it has been highly predictable.

What will the next two years bring before the next “most important election in our lifetimes”? We’ll see soon enough. Meanwhile, life will go on for the majority of the rest of us, those who aren’t consumed by politics. Someone keeps asking, “How bad can it get?” Please don’t! Those running our nation are taking that as a challenge!

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a great sorrow our family suffered last week. Tailer May, our family dog, friend, and baby girl died one month before her 16th birthday. Memories of her are still fresh and haunt every room of our home. She was a trooper to the end, having suffered all the aches and pains of growing old especially during the last year of her life.

Losing Tailer, like the loss of any close friend, has changed perspectives of what’s going on in the world as well as in daily life. What are the most important things in our lifetimes? I’d rate friendships and love right up there at the top of any list.

Racists and bigots don’t deserve a voice in the marketplace of ideas or a right to participate in democracy. Full stop. No arguments. If you don’t like then you can go live in Russia.

November 12, 2022 at 4:15 PM, the problem with your opinion, is who decides what is racist, and who is a bigot.

I believe you to be both, a racist, and a bigot. You introduced both subjects in an article that didn't mention either one. That's my opinion.

I also, agree with the article. Friends, and family are the important things in life. Damn all the decisive politicking to hell.

Did 4:15 post that comment on an unrelated post by accident?

The mid terms prove that the plan to destroy the republicans is working. Tuesday’ s announcement by their standard bearer will be the icing on the cake. The announcement will doom Walker and ‘24 will see a blue wave that will last for decades. That’s a political reality. DL knows it ,but he’s suddenly not consumed by the politics he writes about every week.

@6:38
Republicans betrayed Trump and the citizens of the Unites States when they allowed the democrat party to steal the 2020 election without a single hearing or investigation. Then, when the people voiced their outrage, the RINOs sided with the treasonous Democrat party and and usurped the constitution.

Fortunately the collapse of of the cryptocurrency investment group, FTX and the eventual arrest of Sam Bankman-Fried, will prove that the Democrats and RINOs were laundering money from Ukraine via FTX and Bankman-Fried’s subsidiaries and PACs.

SBF is the latest Soros and Klaus Schwab. In fact, FTX was a participant in the WEF!

The MSM is desperate to suppress the news about the collapse of FTX, the ties to Ukraine and PACs, and to keep Sam Bankman-Fried from become a household name!

Every once in a while the dog that tries to bite the tire of the pickup that passes succeeds.

It isn't pretty.

DL should look up what all Herbert Hoover supporters did for 10 years after 1933.

Or he can move to Hungary.

I Agree 6:38, Holding the Senate despite this year’s high inflation — and a deep-seated historical pattern of intense midterm backlash against the president’s party — ranks as the one of the most surprising and consequential results of an election in which Democrats performed far better than anyone expected. It also makes Joe Biden the first Democratic president since John F. Kennedy in 1962 to not only keep control of the Senate but possibly even expand his majority there.

Republicans will not win significant elections until they dump Trump. He is a cancer on our country.

Anonymous said...

The problem for Republicans isn't the cancer, the problem is all the cancer fans and supporters in the party.

Nobody wins if we continue to by duped by the speech and words of the deliberately ignorant, fools, the clinically insane, false prophets and con artists!
We need to reinstate " The Fairness Doctrine" and strengthen libel and slander laws, and hold publishers liable for accuracy, including internet "publishers".
Indeed, both parties were once held accountable for the candidates who ran and had to vet their nominees for sanity, no moral or ethical failings and reasonable intelligence/experience.
And, judges have to again be held to the same high standards on non-political behavior and high moral standard they once embraced and the parties supported as well as get ABA approved on credentials!
That's the difference in the country you nostalically mourn and the LaLa mythical environment you've bought into and have inflicted upon those of us who rememeber what worked well in the past and how you've screwed it up.
Stop equating wealth, looks and celebrity with the competence and integrity to govern!

It really isn't hard for me to believe that Biden was able to get millions more votes than Obama. It is also really not hard for me to believe that Biden and the Democrats have been able to maintain control of the Senate when Obama could not. I believe this because this nation is fundamentally racist and Joe Biden is a white male!

Violence is true political power. Just ask anyone killed by a communist regime.
The violence on Jan. 6 was entirely one sided by the tyrants.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
