I know Betty Ruth. I am amazed every day at how she has handled this horrible tragedy, with grace and courage. This is a senseless thing that did not have to happen. Because of the irresponsible acts of 2 people, many people's lives will be changed forever. I do not understand why the District Attorney's office would not hold both parties accountable.

Truly a sad story. I read this and was appalled. Mrs. Travis (AKA Ridgeway), certainly ought to at least be held to some level of culpability for contributing to the accident that led to these tragic results.

And for all you Karen Irby-ites, the shoe is now on the other foot; I anticipate your double-speak in advance.

Let us compare...

1. Karen and Richard plead guilty. He accepted his punishment, Karen is fighting her punishment and her guilty plea.
2. You claim, without evidence, that Stuart was culpable in the accident; do you feel the same here about Mrs. Ridgeway, er, Travis?
3. What was the rationale for the change of name? Was she previously married and resuming her maiden name? Or, it is an attempt to hide?

So Karen-ites, bring it and make sure you are not too quick to speak out of both sides of your mouth.

I feel sorrow for Mrs. Fox and her children; it is a horrible thought to think, "he's there, alive, but he's not here, with us." Horrible!

KF, if her panties were down and she had a bruise on her back, it's more likely she was straddling the driver, not merely fellating him.

Is this the same Susan Travis who was married to Julius Ridgway, Jr., and who's father was former Ole Miss law professor Bob Travis who later became a fixture on the golf course at the Canton Country Club?

This is an exercise in line drawing. Where is the law going to draw the line on passenger behavior? Depending upon the driver, wrecks can either be caused by minor distractions or avoided during major distractions. I think the DA has to look at it on a case by case basis, and since it's obvious in this case that the passenger contributed to the accident, she should be charged along with the driver. While the Irby case might have similar circumstances in that the passenger is accused of actions that contributed to the accident, I don't think the evidence against Stuart included a steering wheel-shaped bruise on his back. However, like in the Irby case, it's sad for everyone involved. Bill Billingsley

One thing for sure, either the prisons will fill up or people will finally take serious the consequences of reckless behavoir. Tolerance for drinking and driving is zero. No doubt, sending them to prison will save

Maybe the law doesn't allow the possibility of charging a non-driver for causing an accident. Can bartenders be charged criminally for serving a drunk who plows into someone, or are they only liable in civil court for damages related to their actions?

No one seems to know, 12:31, but Reptar! appeared to be some sort of protected species. He wasn't a minor or anything, but the Clarion-Ledger inexplicably withheld his name until today. All the local television affiliates had identified him by name weeks ago.

How does the State go about proving causation? Did the BJ cause the wreck, or did was it the alcohol impairment?

Her statement was that she was performing the act in the moments *before* the collision, but does not say how long before.

According to the report, Jones said he was distracted by the setting sun and the fact that the passenger's panties were around her ankles. He did not tell the officer anything about oral sex distracting him.

If this is all the State has, any case against Ridgway would be marginal, at best.

Yes she is the same person you are talking about.. This is not Mr Jones first DUI either. He has been down taht road before. ALso there is a domestic charge between these 2 also that happened in January of this year. Hope that piece of ass was worth it cuase in jail he will be someone else piece of ass..

Let me guess - the C-L checked for a record in one jurisdiction, found nothing there, then decided he was a "first-time offender". It wouldn't surprise me if that's what they did (again).

And the evidence of the prior arrests are right there in the Clarion-Ledger's own linked database. Sheesh!

So he did have a previous DUI?
I believe both parties (Jones and Travis) have filed bankruptcy. Mrs. Fox will be compensated very little,
if anything. She will bear this financial burden by herself.

What statute would Ms. Travis be charged under? Not a lawyer, so just asking. While she very possibly contributed to this accident, does MS statute allow the DA to charge her? And for those wanting to make a "similarity" issue with the Irby situation, there is no evidence, other than Karen Irby's self-sustaining testimony that Stuart had anything to do with that accident. While many can conjecture that he was contributory to the accident, its not the same situation as here where the driver and the passenger both have acknowledged the actions that possibly contributed to the accident.

There is yet another victim in all of this that has chosen to remain silent. Poor girl thought she was his "girlfriend" at the time of the accident; what a way to find out you're being cheated on, lied to, conned, & manipulated. We've wished for so long that she would come forward & let everyone know what Mr. Jones is capable of doing/being. Heard she's a sweet, giving, caring person & to top it all off, has been dealing with Breast Cancer...so many victims, the unheard of victims & most definitely, The Fox Family. God Bless them...

Man, this is one of the saddest and most sordid DUI tales I've ever heard. What a crying shame that the Fox's lives have been forever altered (in this world) by the actions of....a pair of drunk, horny fools.

If they had stayed at the Hilton and gotten a ROOM, this whole tragedy could have been averted.

why is everyone fired up over the passenger? the driver chose to drive while intoxicated, the driver either accepted the offer of a bj or requested one ... either way, it's the driver's responsibility to maintain control of the vehicle. he could have refused, and where do you draw the line? bj, hj, nibbling on ear, talking dirty, talking at all, singing, laughing, telling a funny joke, cracking a loud f*rt?.... as tragic as this accident is for the victim, this story is no more maddening than any other alcohol related auto accident in my opinion. prosecute the driver. this accident was a culmination of his poor judgment.

How drunk must Ms Travis-Ridgway have been to have told the med personnel at the hospital what she was doing at the time of the accident.???? Who would have told that unless they were drunk??

10:12, for one thing, she shouldn't have let her boyfriend who was twice the legal limit drive and speed excessively in her car. That's just one thing to be mad about.

I want to know who the "ex-girlfriend" is...please come forward. Would be a great character witness for the Prosecution and the Foxes.

What a absolute shame for the victims of this reckless, drunken act.

Just as in the Irby case, and likely most drunk driver cases, they they didn't intend to cause this much harm. but that is what must sink in to all of us is that our actions can cause such harm and we will be held
accountable. The criminal act of getting behind the wheel while drunk is strongly reinforced by long prison terms
given out.

The odd bruise argument does not make sense. If she was giving him a BJ, the steering wheel would have at her head, not middle of her back; unless he was hanging outside the car while driving 79+ mph down the road. Even if she was half naked giving him a BJ while he was driving, how is that a crime? I don't even know how this would be charged. If death had occurred, maybe manslaughter based on negligence, but since no death, I don't believe there is a crime that applies to the "facts."

You also have to feel sorry for her FOUR children, aged from about 5 to almost 30. Her poor judgement is going to cause them shame and embarrassment for the rest of their lives. However, this is still nothing compared to what the victim and his family continue to experience.

I was just sent a copy of this article. I am sickened by the fact that the driver (with whom I've personally known for years) has been able to avoid any type of conviction for as long as he has. My thoughts are with the poor victim and his family. Because of something that the idiot did this man will never be the same nor will his family! This is not the driver's first time for ANYTHING! He is a smug bastard who knows how to use people to get what he wants. I hope that he truly gets the 10 years that Michael Guest has promised and that he get a "special" BJ in the pen!

Well, well, well...things are finally starting to catch up with Richard Troy Jones. He shouldn't receive any leniency for what he's done; past or present. It's terrible that something like this had to happen to expose him for what he is. Speaking from experience, I'll agree with the previous comment, although far worse could be said. This is tragic for all involved, Mr. Jones and Ms. Travis included. This is something they too will live with for the rest of their lives. It sounds like Mr. Jones is accepting responsibility and will pay his debt to society. It is one thing to judge the criminal act itself - we are right to judge it, and the victims are entitled to justice. But the personal attacks and jokes are just morally wrong. We have no idea what they are going through - how deeply they might be repenting, how ashamed and in need of mercy they might be.

Be assured that Mr. Jones has not accepted responsibility for any of his actions nor has he ever. He is DRIVING around in a vehicle that hasn't had a license plate in SEVERAL months. DRIVING? Yes, driving! Can I count the number of DUI's he has gotten on one hand? Nope. Lets not forget the very recent domestic violence charge. The only reason he is now "accepting responsibility" for his actions is because he has no choice. He leaves a path of destruction everywhere he goes and has never taken the time to consider the damage he has done. Repent? He most definitely should. Ashamed? If his repeated actions over the last 25+ is any indication, then how could he possibly even be ashamed much less remorseful for his actions?? Mercy has been granted, this is seen in his sentencing of only 10 years. December 6 is supposed to be the day, may justice prevail.
