Check out the new online newsletter from Downtown Jackson Partners (which yours truly helped create. ;-) ): Jackson NOW!. Ben Allen sent out a press release about the newsletter today:
"Here she is! Downtown Jackson Partners is rolling out our new "Jackson Now" online newsletter. If it is "happening" in Jackson, we will have it here. Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07
Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

... and complete comment moderation. No thanks KF.
So sorry. Requires registration and comment moderation is enabled. Comments that are critical are going to be accepted. What won't be accepted are personal attacks, the general trashing you see on Clarion-Ledger forums, and similar stuff. Its a newsletter, not a free-for-all forum.
Comments that are critical are going to be accepted.
Bullshit.
JFP gets paid for the Boom mag Kingfish. Are you getting paid any compensation?
Those with money have finally figured out how to silence bloggers. This was the last place where I ever thought that would happen.
Comments that are critical are going to be accepted.
Bullshit.
Like the above, potty mouth.
Are you receiving compensation Kingfish?
Whitney has a serious rack!!!
CENSORED CENSORED...or is it just sore?
Moderation my ass. Thats just pure censored bullshit (thanks to all above for giving me the insight into correctly describing this vomit). It will die on the vine with little traffic, no interest and basically a site for what? Self-aggrandizement? This ought to be good....
Are you receiving compensation Kingfish?
"Are you receiving compensation Kingfish?"
What a STUDID GD question. Who gives a shit Chavez?
Ooo ooo ooo KF might be getting money for services renered. The great WPS HAS BOUGHT HIM. Othor fucking Cain LIVES!!!!
Fucking mental MIDGET.
Are you receiving compensation Kingfish?
off topic, but so sad about Joel Clarke. Heartbreaking.
1 2 3 test 1 2 3 test is NOT and entry. Good Lord.
Too cool KF. Thanks for posting.
Yeah, saw that about Joel. Damn. Prayers go out to his family.
Kaptain, you are absolutely correct. A newsletter can have all the nice layouts, bells and whistles, techno toys, but it still comes down to content. I'm a member of TAF at LSU and the newsletter and pr from them is a joke that literally no one reads or takes seriously. If they take the milquetoast route, then they will have a pretty newsletter no one really reads. If they have content that is informative, timely, and relevant, then it will have no problem with readership.
On the other hand, it sure is a pretty site...for your morning laugh...and those of you who exhibit a bit of anger management issues...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kmv3WlKa6U8
After listening to it, it kinda sounds like a good comment ride right here on JJ!!!
Personally I think it is completely reasonable for Fish to get paid. He sure has put alot of effort into making JJ one of the critical daily destinations in the Jacktown blogosphere. But I also have to agree that he should fully disclose that he is being paid. I can think of many reasons why he should but, for me, the key reason is to protect the integrity of the work product here. The longer you avoid disclosure Fish the greater the suspicions.
"What won't be accepted are personal attacks, the general trashing you see on Clarion-Ledger forums, and similar stuff."
Yuck, yuck. You'd be naive to think Kingfish that Frick and Frack Allen aren't over there and other blogs+forums trashing and personal attacking. Gimme a break.
Was in downtown Jackson last night for dinner at the Mayflower and a look see at the King Edward. Everything done to date is fabulous and the renovations hold so much promise!
Given how Jackson gets bashed regularly, I don't mind a counter extolling the great stuff going on downtown.
Our downtown architecture has the potential to be a showplace for the art deco period just as Charleston and Savannah have made the most of their architectural advantages.
The difference is the support for and LOVE of Charleston and Savannah trumped all when those cities were in trouble. The natives talked positively and rolled up their sleeves. And, the money people and developers had enough sense to see their LONG TERM interests were served by a viable , vibrant city.
Some of our citizens who oppose " cutting and running" from war torn areas overseas, seem to be the first to wimp out and " cut and run" from Jackson. No fight, just gave up.
How about supporting your capitol city and showing some guts and determination and optimism, for a change instead of whining and criticizing all the time?
You wanna go, go, but you don't have to be an obstacle to Jackson succeeding with your constant negative criticism.
GEEZ what benefit to the State if Jackson were to go the way of Detroit? I'd rather " do" Charleston or Savannah!
Either offer a constructive idea or solution or just shut up and get out of the way!
AMEN @11:37. You are RIGHT ON.
The utter fear downtown supporters have for comments left on our local blogs never ceases to amaze.
The utter stupidity of downtown detractors never ceases to amaze me.
Are you receiving compensation Kingfish?
Why don't you start a blog, pussy? Fear people will know who you are?
Are you receiving compensation Kingfish?
8:05, WHAT COMPENSATION DO YOU RECEIVE, IF ANY, AND FROM WHOM?
WE NEED TO KNOW TO CHECK YOUR INTEGRITY SO BACK THE PHUCK OFF KF. OTHERWISE YOUR WORD IS USELESS.
It's a beautifully designed site, KF. I look forward to checking it out more thoroughly.
8:05, WHAT COMPENSATION DO YOU RECEIVE, IF ANY, AND FROM WHOM?
WE NEED TO KNOW TO CHECK YOUR INTEGRITY SO BACK THE PHUCK OFF KF. OTHERWISE YOUR WORD IS USELESS.
You know Kingfish, underwear wearing, beer drinking little boy. Who are you, little dick?
Whoever the madman is on here that keeps posting again and again, you're hysterical. Do you get out much? You should try yoga or something. I can't stop laughing.
KF I just went to the site. Good job! Crisp, clean, informative.
KK @ December 18, 2009 6:44 PM nails it. It will die on the vine. Discourage participation with that sort of moderation and you'll end up with nobody participating. Blogland is littered with too many blogs to count that took the same tack. Participation is the beauty about JJ, NMC, JFP and, like it or not, the C-L.
The blogger who is obsessed with the question of " compensation" must be dumber than a post.
Look, if KF isn't receiving consideration from Snooty Pooch or The Auditorium, then THEY are stupid not to reward him and KF is far too generous with his time and praise.
If KF isn't a supporter of abandoned pet adoption and isn't a political conservative and/or Republican, I'll eat my hat.
IF " compensation obsessed" can't figure out the biases, preferences and likely support given to the blogs he or she reads after a few weeks and put what is read in context, his or her reading comprehension ability must be near zero! Their ability to reason and critically think is non-existent.
Of course, when you can get degrees by memorization and regurgitation on objective tests in our school system, you might actually believe you're " smart"! It's a plague and " obsessed about compensation" is a carrier!
All I will say is any arrangements I make with anyone outside of JJ are none of anyone's business. Period. If said commentor wants to know, he or she can post his tax returns first and lead by example.
Are the Auditorium and Snooty Pooch paid advertisers? Yup. Am I going to reveal the details? Nope. However, they are advertisers I happen to know before I bought ads and like so the support is two way.
Rock and roll KF. You are a capitalist, and not a communist. I agree. You are right on.
" Blogland is littered with too many blogs to count that took the same tack. Participation is the beauty about JJ, NMC, JFP and, like it or not, the C-L."
Jackson NOW! is a newsletter, NOT a blog. Comments are welcome, but not a requisite or "measure" of its worth or success.
Traffic thus far is amazing.
Don't play dumb Kingfish. If you discovered some impropriety downtown akin to Steadivest, Evans+MVT, or other corruption involving one of the DJP board members, their companies, or the redevelopment effort downtown I doubt you'll be reporting on it now that you're getting paid. Big, big difference between that and retailers+restauranteurs placing ads on JJ.
As for traffic being amazing. 100 hits from one user isn't anywhere the same as 1 hit from 100 users. Get a CLUE Ben.
No one is playing dumb. The proof will be in the coverage. I can feed you all the BS I want but the content here will stand on its own merits.
As for Steadivest, you are dead wrong about that in more ways than one. Some people I know weren't happy at all I have pursued this coverage but oh well, its getting covered. I want to see every one of those bastards go down if they are indeed guilty of fraud.
December 20, 2009 11:03 AM
Thanks for the props, but, I do NOT consider CL anywhere in the league you mention. The CL is a RAG. I am still wondering who was involved in a hit and run at Fortification and High Street. Its just outside of Fenian's and frankly, I just wonder, but, I do not, ever will, expect the CL to actually report news. Its paid for by someone, and its not in my interest.

88 more than all day Saturday....COOL
PS...You are LOSING....
Danny, the problem, and I'm not Ben or an Allen for that matter, is that your comments ASSUMES there is wrongdoing in the downtown investment? Why? Why do you think that? You sound like a sore loser. And you are, in fact, a loser.
Mr. Cooper, you are suggesting that KF and the Downtown Jackson Partners disprove something that is suspected or imagined by you or known only to you.
Challenging someone to prove something hasn't happened or that something isn't going to happen in the future is a transparent though popular ploy these days and very unimpressive save to the intellectually challenged or paranoid.
That you make would make such charges without offering any basis for such against JDP and KF in a public forum does more to cause one to question your integrity than it does to cast suspicion onto those you accuse.

Matt Allen? Is that Ben's son? I knew they would ask his 2 cents worth and what about Kamikaze? The usual cliquish, enlightened professionals. When you mention what is being done to rehabilitate South Jackson they act like they didn't know there was a South Jackson. Only the well heeled can afford to live in Electric 308,Fondren Corner,King Edward.

I must get to the King Edward as soon as possible.Who can pass up an opportunity to count the buildings at JSU;or the cars on the train. I knew there were things to do in downtown.

Are they right about doing something about South Jackson? Absolutely. When I was a kid I saw alot more of South Jackson than I did downtown. I don't know how many times my grandfather took me to Pauls on Hwy 80, which I just found out was owned by Mr. Apostle's dad, I still remember him like it was yesterday, he was so nice. Or the Green Derby for breakfast or coffee or that water slide (yeah, it was made out of concrete), going to movies at Ellis Aisle or when I worked at Jitney in college going there for training.
If Harvey doesn't do something soon, County Line going to end up the same way. Why the hell hasn't anyone tried to get a Petco or Whole Foods to locate where B&N and Circuit City used to be?
However, I'm not against dowtown investment. Keep in mind that while over in Ridgeland and Flowood they only have to plow up pasture for the most part, in Jackson we have demolition costs and that is not counting asbestos removal if its present. that puts downtown at a competitive disadvantage already so I don't mind the tax breaks as I see the residents and shopper paying sales taxes that would not have been there before. I didn't mind loaning Standard Life the money because its only $900,000. If we have to foreclose on it, guess what? That building will be worth ALOT more and Jackson will probably make a nice profit so to me, that was an acceptable risk.
You are right about poor people not being able to afford housing and that is something that needs to be worked on but lets be real here, the people with money who can afford the nice house notes and property taxes are moving to nice subdivisions in Rankin and madison. There is a certain amount of the population that would prefer to live in a downtown area but in comparable quality so why not go after them? Now if there are bad deals and the taxpayers are getting ripped off, I'll say so but philosophically, I'm not against most of this stuff. Have to start somewhere and yeah, i do hope South Jackson, West Jackson, County Line Road, and the rest of the city are on the list.
Do you own any property in Jackson Kingfish?
Well said KF AND the city needs people with money to STAY. It's called a residential tax base and the cities that survive have them and preserve them or develope them to entice people back. The cities that thrive ALL retain high end residential areas downtown and within the city limits.
It's priorities, we can't do it all at once.
South Jackson was being allowed to die 30 years ago when the city government was lily white. There's reasons for THAT that had everything to do with tax base and costs and where the money was and little to do with race except to tap into racial hatreds as needed.Make it about race and nobody will " follow the money".
SteveW, I'm sure when a Black person complains of racism your frustrated reaction is " it's not always about race"...back at you buddy. Having a viable university downtown has worked, renovating train stations has worked. But, there wasn't " instant gratification". Don't you ever GO anywhere? If not, at least, READ something about successful downtown redevelopments!
Those of you who look at everything through Black or White racial glasses...YOU are THE worst PROBLEM this city AND state HAVE! You are cutting off your noses to spite your faces! Ideas and projects don't have RACE, they are either good or not!
Did we have a city-wide referendum where agreement was reached that downtown was the #1 priority?
"South Jackson was being allowed to die 30 years ago when the city government was lily white. "
What you said.
Who said it was a number one priority? Last time I checked private developers were cobbling together plans and then coming to the City asking for tax credits, breaks, and similar assistance.
Nothing stopping some private developers from doing same thing in other parts of the city.
As for referendum, I thought that was why we elected a City Council and Mayor. I suppose you now want a referendum on every building now.
Elections have consequences. Yes. So why are you bitching about interest rate swaps and other matters of civic finance? Leave it up to the Mayor and City Council to determine what is best. You can't have it both ways.
I also said there is nothing stopping a group of developers from lobbying the city for help with plan to revitalize downtown.
I wrote up a similar idea for NE Jackson. There is one in front of them right now for a neighborhood development in S. Jackson. When they ask the council for said assistance, we have the right to argue against it and contact our council members and demand the media cover it. Which does happen as on the interest rate swaps.
People aren't leaving Jackson in droves because of a lack of redevelopment. The tunnel vision is bad on this site.
I give the mayor a "thumbs up" for at least subjecting himself to criticism and for even entering into a debate with us Jackasserieses. ;-)
I'm all for reasoned debate and criticism, but if it's the repetitive, rude and stupid nonsense of the 10:42s of this world.
Too bad we can't keep crazy people locked up anymore!
Free speech starts to look more like the right to be nuts and inflict your insanity on the rest of us!
Hey, its ok. Most of us here read that and scroll on, never taking the time to read other than a good laugh. Locking people up solves nothing more than raising my taxes to support your crazy ideas.

Go there. AWESOME.
This has gotten ridiculous and I'm now zapping comments.
So again, I have to be the voice of reason....click my name for insight to all of this...Damn KF you really do attract the highest caliber of criticism.
KK, you hurt my feelings.
C'mon. Its all good stuff...big hug...sniff, sniff...
After rereading comments...12:43 People are not leaving Jackson for any reason other than their SAFETY. Try to raise a family in Jackson. Not gonna happen. Think about commerce, daily commerce...then take a look at Northpark, then look at Madison. Think. SAFETY. Heck, you are not even safe from folks like the Bell's and they are benefactors of this community!
GD LOSER...are you STILL here? GO HOME wierdo! No one is listening to you. What you are selling, noone is buyimg. Kick your dog or something,
Did you actually take the time to write that gibberish? Why? I mean really why? Why would you take the time to pick on a comment? Are you affected? Did you not find enough folks to yell at today? Or, did you think for a moment your personal attack, your vomit of a comment, your simpleton approach to dialogue, might, just might, elicit a response from someone other than me?
Nutcase 2 posts above above needs to get out more.
You are salacious at best with your wit.
Misreading your comment but it appears you were referring to above the above above? I'm outta here. ")

That is a heap of SAND ROPING Ben but we ALL KNOW you can SAND ROPE with the best of our CIVIC WARRIORS.
Hey dude! How many are on your blog?
Peddle, peddle, peddle Doug.
Um, it is just me, or what in the hell is 7:22 talking about?
10:42 I have raised children in Jackson who are poster kids for doing well. I have friends doing the same with the same result. It's about parenting.
Better teach your kids to live in the real world and learn how to " be safe" anywhere and learn that not all people are alike so they'll development some judgment about people.
Whatever, read the crime reports posted here. Yes there is crime outside the city, but comparing the two Jackson has issues. Lots of issues, especially with violence. I mean, a guy set his girlfriend on fire??? Making kids safe in a safe environment that is conducive to productive development through great parenting is better than the greatest parenting ever in a war zone. I choose not to be in a war zone. Now if you live in the significantly wealthy area of Jackson, over there off Ridgewood, I don't think we are talking about you.
Making kids safe in a safe environment that is conducive to productive development through great parenting is better than the greatest parenting ever in a war zone.
Yes, as a resident of Jackson (not NE), I am constantly concerned about my girlfried being set on fire. It is a very reasonable fear given that this one nutbag did such a disgusting thing (note sarcasm). Such a war zone, yet I've never been a victim of a crime.
